What needs to happen with this team in general?

I think this team has been destroyed, in large part, by too many changes in the FO and then mismatches between the FO and Coaches.

Key pieces to this team have progressively been removed which has diminished identity and chemistry, not to mention talent. Free agent veterans have been brought that were either very expensive, thus limiting a proper build of the team's talent, or who were hoped to be 'comeback'/rebound players, bargains, but who, in large part, haven't worked out, and have either continued to under-perform or have been repeatedly injured. Some of the best players recently that we have lost have been in-house talent that we simply haven't held onto. And picks we have made have been 'need' picks or injured ones (man am I tired of us picking damaged goods - I know, anyone else does it and it work out, but it's just too many times on this not-so-merry-go-round).

I think Tannenbaum needs to go. However, this team needs more than just release and replace. It needs Gase to build something more. I think he has a concept and identity in mind, and he needs to be given the freedom and power to build it. He needs to look at the roster and determine which players fit what he wants to build mentally, as well as talent-wise. He needs to find the players who are his type of players, who can be leaders, and become pillars in building a team with a philosophy and identity, who can buy in. Then he needs to be given the ability to build along those lines, with a mind to not just acquire talented players, but identifying players who fit their mentality, especially at the beginning.

    Basically, he needs control.

Now I'm not saying this because I'm sold on Gase 100%. I've no idea how he will pan out. However, whoever is in charge, they need this ability. Too many cooks have spoiled the Miami broth. Division or disunity at the higher leadership levels is fatal for anything. Gase seems to be a guy with a clear goal. Ross needs to buy into that and support it, and not create or allow interference with that.

This team has been systematically broken down (and all with good intentions) so that it is somehow less than the sum of its parts. If the Dolphins are to actually improve, someone needs to be a clear leader, with a vision, and build for that type. Gase might be that guy. Tannenbaum isn't.

Gase is the only guy who is going to make it out of this season alive.

Here's the deal though. Whatever plan you go with, it needs to involve a committed rebuild that is honestly about becoming a good football organization.

I hate to say it, but even saying "we can be competitive in 2/3 years" seems false right now. We need at least 3 years of solid drafting. We need to avoid major free agent expenditures. Minor free agents need to be acquired however to help provide the coach's with some level of reliability and execution.

I know people like to look down on the Rams, but they committed to rebuilding around Fisher (defense) and a strong running game. So far, they're doing decently well. The Vikings committed to the same thing around Zimmer and it's REALLY worked out well for them. There are varying levels of success. You aren't guaranteed dominance but being competitive takes a few years and you can't just hope to do it all on the strength of the passing game.

I get that passing efficiency has a strong correlation to winning and that rushing offense doesn't but that IS NOT THE SAME as saying that you draft for a top QB prospect and then pile on a bunch of WRs and consider it done. The Dolphins need to be a tougher team and that's going to take a culture change that begins at the top.

Exactly. And Ross could be an obstacle to that if he doesn't "get it". I don't know that I can see Tannenbaum giving the reins to Gase and submitting to Gase's leadership on this, or even so, if he has the instinct/talent to to get the right guys anyway.

I have no idea if Gase is the solution or not. What I have decided though is that Tannebaum is definitely a major part of the problem and he needs to go ASAP.

If this means giving the power to Gase and seeing how he is able to develop this team over the next few years. I can live with that. This might be giving a first time head coach more than he can handle so early in his coaching career but what is happening now with Tannebaum in charge is clearly not working at all.

Tannenbaum most obviously has to go. He should've never been put in a position of power to begin with after turning the Jets into a dumpster fire. Ross' obsession with NYJ cronies has us in this position. There is only ONE move that would restore a bit of faith in Ross as an owner and that is getting rid of Tannenbaum and somehow finding someone that can work in tandem with his head coach.

Listen im not crazy about Gase, but it is apparent that the guy buying the groceries spent 99 of his 100 dollars on one ingredient and went shopping in the bargain bin for everything else. You cannot put together a competitive team ilke that. What I saw today was possibly the worst defense in football surrounding a 100 million dollar man going through the motions in the middle. That cannot happen. You need to take that money and spend it rebuilding a REAL LB corps, get us some effective corners and pass rushers. We have never been one player away from competing but the guy in charge fed that crap sandwich to the owner. No one likes Tannehill, I am out on him myself, but the guy is tough as balls and the team has repaid his toughness by putting together the worst O-Line in football year after year, taking away his best weapon in the backfield, and not giving him any kind of security blanket at TE. It makes me long for the days of Wanny lol.
