Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert returned to the game after leaving briefly with a wrist injury on Sunday, but the team isn’t sure how long he can play through it. Miami coach Adam Gase said he doesn’t know if Albert will be able to play on Sunday against the Rams.

“Right now we’re going through the stages of having the hand specialist look at it just to make sure that no further damage can be done,” Gase said. “There’s all these little steps you have to go through just to make sure we’re not hurting him for future or affecting his long-term career. We have to go through all those little steps to make sure that we handle everything the right way.”

The Dolphins’ offensive line was plagued by injuries early in the season, when they started 1-4. Now they’re on a four-game winning streak, in playoff contention at 5-4, and hoping not to see another injury on the offensive line send them backward.

Tackle Branden Albert's return to the game in the second half with a cast on his left hand might have come as a bit of a surprise, but he said there was no way he wasn’t getting back into the game.

Albert was injured in the first half and went to the locker room late in the second quarter. He began the second half on the sideline before taking his familiar left tackle spot on the third-quarter drive that ended with Damien Williams’ 18-yard touchdown catch.

“(Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram) got me on a bull rush and I caught myself,” Albert said. “I looked at my wrist and I was like, something’s not right. So I went to the sideline, cut my tape off and then it was out of place. They were messing with it and trying to pop it back in place. And I took some X-rays and once they popped it back in place, I had to go back out there and finish the game.”

When he spoke to reporters after the game, Albert repeated several times that he absolutely had to finish the game.

“I had to,” Albert said. “Early in the game I had some struggles, so I had to finish … I had to finish the game. It was pretty tough, but I had to help my team and my pride wouldn’t let me go out like that.”

When Albert was sidelined, Laremy Tunsil slid over to take his place at left tackle and Kraig Urbik stepped in at left guard.

Asked whether he had to convince Head Coach Adam Gase to let him back into the game, Albert quickly replied: “No, no, no, no. I was going back in no matter what. I wasn’t going to finish the game like that.”

Albert told reporters X-rays showed his wrist was dislocated and the next step will be evaluating the extent of the damage and formulating a plan to deal with the injury.

“I was OK (playing with the cast),” he said. “I was able enough to do my job. Now I go get X-rays and see how I feel and see what we’re going to do so I could play for the rest of the year.”

    Damn bummer.

Add LT to the off-season shopping list regardless.

Backup swing T, sure. We have a stud LT for the next decade. G should be a priority over LT. LT and C are our 2 best positions in regards to starting spots. LT is our best. So LT is way down on the list. If anything we could definitely use a starting RT and relegate James to backup T where he belongs. He is the weak link. Btw I love you signature quote.
