It's been a fun 4 weeks around here. My interest in the NFL has picked up a bit and the Dolphins have been fun to watch again! But I'm hesitant to fall into the trap again. I think it's really easy for fans to forget that we have been here in very similar situations with Ryan Tannehill and this Miami Dolphins team in almost all of the last 4 years. Up and down seasons where Miami found itself in the playoff hunt, but ultimately failed and ended up in mediocrity. Let's recap:

    2012:

After starting the season 1-3 Miami rattled off 3 straight wins to get to 4-3 and put themselves in the playoff picture before it all went to crap and ultimately ended in a mediocre 7-9 campaign.

    2013:

A real roller coaster ride. Season started with a bang with 3 straight wins. Then 4 straight losses. Then back and forth for a bit before another 3 game win stretch got the team to 8-6 needing only 1 more win to secure a playoff spot! We all know how that ended...

    2014:

After starting off the season a lackluster 2-3 Miami won 4 of their next 5 to find themselves at 6-4 and in great position. The end result? Another 8-8 season.

    2015:

This season doesn't fit the mold as much, as it started off terrible and never really got on track. But even in 2015 there were 2 commanding wins after Campbell took over that had fans here thinking anything was possible at 3-3!

What's my point? Not to dampen anyone's spirits or to say just because these seasons ended badly, this one will too. After all this is a new coaching regime.

My point is, when you look around you see a lot of people acting as if they have won something. Some debate. Maybe it's about their belief in the new head coach. Or their belief in Ryan Tannehill.

I think these people need to stop and remember that points like this have happened in almost each of the previous 4 most recent seasons and the final outcome of anything is very much up in the air. We all want Ryan Tannehill to continue his current level of play. But will he? Or will he regress and finish the season similarly to the way he did in 2013? Unable to get anything going except a whole lot of interceptions.

We all want Adam Gase to succeed where Philbin failed at this crucial stage of the season. Will he keep the team motivated? Can his coaching and play calling help maintain Tannehill's consistency? Or will he lose the team down the stretch the same way Philbin often did?

We all want the team to stay healthy, but injuries can and will happen. Will Jay Ajayi be able to continue his dominance behind an offensive line that isn't 100% healthy? Or could 1 or 2 key injuries derail the entire offense the same way it has in the past?

I'm half posting this to get people to stop and think and not set themselves up for a huge disappointment, and half posting this to jinx the team into breaking the streak of mediocrity. So all of you can come back to this and say, "See dummy! This year was different!" Here's hoping.

Thais ride will end when the offensive line takes two injuries to starters.the early season proved we don't have capable backups. We can survive one injury. Two would be too much

Those seasons are always in the back of my mind too. I am trying not to get my hopes up too much. I honestly don't expect to make the playoffs this year, I can see us falling to 9-7. I would not be upset with that result, and I hope this team proves me wrong. I do think we have something special in Gase, and I hope he shocks me and takes us to the playoffs. I do think, long term, we are going to compete. We have the building blocks, just need to get a few more pieces imo. I just hope we can get a playoff push sooner than later so Cam Wake can enjoy what he has left.

I agree been there done this, seen this many times. Been fun yes it has, but there is NO depth on this team and expecting no injuries is a bad game to play. We still have a TOUGH division schedule. We let a few early games get away from us which we would have needed to get into a wildcard. It's going to be extremly tough and I for one think they lose to the RAMS out west. Than we have New Engalnd, Bufallo, Jets we have to win all of them. Maybe they can get the right pieces for a run at a wildcard next year but until we topple the Pats were not going to be in contention for anything.

Final outcome is still very much in the air, yes, but I for one have never seen this team play a game like they did last Sunday against the Chargers since 2012 (much longer than that actually), including that 37-0 blowout against the Chargers in 2014.

This was different IMO. The entire team was playing at high intensity the whole game, creating and making clutch plays one after another.

So sure it might end bad, but this was different. And I think it's mostly down to Gase. First time since 2012 (that's the year you listed) I'm truly optimistic about coaching.

Those examples are why I'm not allowing myself to get too excited. I appreciate the wins, I appreciate the streak, but I won't allow myself any hope of a winning season, much less the playoffs, until they show they can win games that mean something.

Sorry bro; mission failed....you're not bringing me off my high. I said 4 weeks ago that we were about to go on a 6 game win streak, and now here we are left with the two worst teams of that span with a team that's playing with all the confidence in the world. I'm ALL-IN on our Dolphins this season regardless if they finish the year 7-0 or 0-7, because it's so blatantly obvious that they turned the corner in a dozen different ways. And the beautiful thing is that this is not a Tannehill conversation- we're talking about the entire team and what they're bringing to the table.

It did? Because I seem to remember a team that threw 30 three yard passes a game and 20 more out-routes to Hartline along the sideline. We had zero run game, horrible blocking, ridiculous game management and all of our hopes pinned on the other team not killing Tannehill as he took his 7th sack of the day. Likewise, we spent four years building a lead in the 3rd quarter and then handing it right back in the final minutes, only to realize that our 3 yard dinks don't work very well in a 2 minute offense. That was the story of the decade- especially since Tannehill can't throw the long-ball worth a darn.

Is that what you're seeing this year as well?

Plain and simple, this is the most rounded offense we've had in 30+ years- not even the Marino teams had the benefit of a superior ground game and a deep threat. And no, I'm not comparing Tannehill to Marino; I'm simply saying that if Dan the Man had Ajayi, this receiver corp and this offensive line, he'd likely be wearing a ring with another undefeated season or two under his belt. We have six STUD receivers that are playing their role well, two running backs on fire, a competent QB and a line that's over-performing by a wide margin. It's all unicorns and rainbows in that huddle.

On the defensive side of the ball, we have seen this team dig in and compete in nine games this season- they haven't slacked off once. Seattle and Wilson had 12 points. The Pats blew us out...and then got shut down completely. Our D has showed up every game, closed out contests strong, and our four losses have come from a lethargic offense that couldn't throw a block. But hey...problem solved.

I know people don't want to get their hopes up because this team has let us down over and over again, but name one team in any major sport that hasn't. There's only one champion per year and 30+ losers...that's just the way it goes. That's sports in general.

So comparing this team to what we saw in 2013 is just plain crazy- they're two completely different squads playing for two completely different things. Our current team is playing hard as hell and finding ways to win DESPITE multiple screw-ups per game, and as fans I don't see what more we can ask of them.

Being a fan isn't about where your team stands in February folks- it's about the feeling they give you about this upcoming Sunday. So focus on that and enjoy the ride.

I think those saying Sunday's game was different forget Tannehill has had several very impressive games throughout his career. This is by no means a breakout game. The Chargers game was great, but was it as good as the...

    2013 game vs. Patriots?

    312 yards, 3 TDs 0 INT

Or how about vs. the very same Chargers in 2014?

    288 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT

Or last year's finale vs. the Patriots?

    350 yards, 2 TDs 0 INT

Yes, the Chargers game was great. But fans are remembering it as his best performance simply because it's the most recent impressive performance. He has had equally impressive, if not much better performances in his career.

  10. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

No, it was impressive, not for the stats, but for what showed up on tape. that 39 yard TD pass to Stills was 56 yards in the air, that was placed perfectly for Stills to catch it. He didn't have to adjust, come back, jump insanely high, etc. It was a seed. Oh, and he did it while taking a brutal hit, in the process.

It was impressive because on 3rd and forever, he escaped, what would have been a drive stalling sack, and scrambled for a much needed first down, taking out defenders in the process, and finishing that same drive with a beautiful dime that dropped right into Damien Williams' hands for a TD.

It was impressive because he essentially MATCHED that Stills TD to DeVante Parker later in the game, again, with pressure in his face and again, putting it right on target, catching Parker in stride.

It was impressive because he was still able to protect the ball and make his usual throws while on the run, to Jarvis Landry, which helped get Damien Williams his rushing TD.

It was impressive because he had, I believe, his 2nd best passer rating for a single game, in his career. An did so on the road, on the west coast, and when needed most.

I still don't think we make the playoffs this year, but I do think Gase has found a formula and more importantly, knows how, and when, to utilize Ryan Tannehill's strengths.

Besides...don't fart on our picnic, bro...four in a row!

Samphin said a lot of what I would say in response so let me just say this: I personally have NEVER said Tannehill played a full game the way a franchise QB should until last Sunday.

So yes you're right that there were many other good team performances, and you're right that people tend to overweight recent events (and first impressions.. it's the stuff in the middle that gets down weighted), but I know that I've never written or talked about a game from 2012 onwards the way I've done after this game.

I'm just one guy.. but at least to me that was the best Dolphins performance since 2012 (and really since the Pennington run in 2008).

First let me say is I'm glad I'm not bringing you down from your high. And your last statement that I quoted is a very fair counterpoint.

I understand it's not entirely logical to compare this team to previous teams. I don't want to turn it into another Tannehill thread, but he's the one common component and a big part of it. If this year is going to be different, he will have to stay consistent with the level he is currently playing at. We haven't seen that yet in his career. This is where we have to hope Gase can do what he was hired to do.

I don't think it's wrong to be enjoying the 4 game streak and excited for the future. But fans so often assume current trajectories will continue indefinitely. I think it's easy to point out why this team is different and all the reasons why the past doesn't apply. But then so often we see the same result under different circumstances.

    Full disclosure:

This isn't the first time I've penned a thread like this. I did so in 2013 when the team only needed to beat the Bills or Jets to make the playoffs. Everyone was talking about the team had turned the corner. I pointed out that was premature. See the results here:

    http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?79991-Miami-Hasn-t-turned-the-Corner-YET

I think you will notice people spoke of Philbin much the same way they are talking about Gase now. Joe freaking Philbin. I want to be "wrong" this time. I put wrong in quotation marks because my stance isn't that Miami WILL fail again. It's that we have no evidence that the team has turned that corner of mediocrity. We've been here before. Will the results be different?

Why are you trying to piss in everyone's cheerios? Why trying an pull everyone down. I hate posts like this to no end. Piss and moan when they lose. Not happy when they're winning and just waiting for them to lose a game so you can swoop in and dump on everyone. I don't have rose colored glasses on but REALY? Why even be a fan?

Like I said, if our line has some injuries then this can easily be a 5-11 season- I'm not delusional about that at all. And I don't think the coaching staff is either; line is still a priority in the off-season. But the much bigger takeaway is that for the first time since the late 90's, we have a solid plan for victory each week that doesn't revolve around one player being a superstar. For me personally, that makes the entire season regardless of record or playoffs. We have an identity.

And guess what? We still stink overall! Seriously, we are leaving so many points on the field from week to week- Gase is still going off on people and telling them that they haven't won anything yet. This team can be so much better on offense and special teams than what we're showing- and we've still won 4 in a row. I am very confident that our best football is still ahead of us.

One other thing that's bothered me though- a few weeks back, some here said that they liked what they saw, but we needed to beat a team like Buffalo to prove we were legit. Once we won, they said that it was only two games and nothing to get excited about. Then we beat the Jets....the freaking Jets of all teams....and the attitude here was "meh." Are you serious? That drove me nuts- how does the world not hate the Jets as much as I do? All those losing seasons we endured and there was only two positive outcomes to keep us going- we beat the Pats and those stinking Jets.

To top it all off, there was only one other member (besides me) on this entire site that posted we would beat the Chargers. And I understand- the Bolts are a tough team with a great QB. But those same people who condemned us are still saying, "Well, this team has to prove that they're for real for me to buy in." I can't understand that logic at all- it baffles my mind! We just had a four game run where most of the folks here expected us to be 0-4 or 1-3...how can that not make them over the moon with pride?

My main point here- this is not a perfect football team doing everything right to squeak out a win. We are struggling, making mistakes, and still finding a way to manhandle opponents in the 4th quarter to earn the W. So when folks like you say, "if we can keep this consistency...", I'm thinking, "I hope not! We can be so much better than what we're showing."

For instance, you mentioned Tannehill- but what did he really do? A beautiful bomb to Stills- great play. But that's only one play. The deep toss to Parker- Tannehill couldn't even see Parker when he threw the ball...it was a total jump ball into coverage. But it was a play that Parker SHOULD win every time...he just hasn't been doing it. And I'm not trying to knock Tannehill for a second here, but if you look at what he did in the 2nd half of week 2....that's a QB putting a team on his back and unleashing everything he has. The win yesterday? That was an average day for a QB with a half dozen sweet throws. We won't see weekly repeats of that week 2 performance, but we can likely reproduce what we did on Sunday every time. It looked easy because the incredible pressure wasn't there to part the Red Sea and perform a miracle. Everyone played well- that's the difference.

I'll make a friendly wager with you- over the next three weeks, this team is going to click and put up 40+ on somebody. In fact, we may do it twice in a row with LA and SF in our sights. Because when this team finally clicks on all cylinders, you're going to see the team I've been so excited about for most of the season. They haven't fully showed up yet, but we're getting closer every week.

That in bold is precisely the team we haven't seen for a long time. You know.. one that finds a way to win instead of finds a way to lose.

So yeah, if the choice is between being better than that by not making mistakes and doing what we saw, it's a no-brainer to choose "better". But a key threshold is being breached with this team if it consistently finds ways to win. Yes, I'd love for that to continue even with the struggles.

We're definitely checking things off the "In order to believe" list.

    - Winning streak
    - Beating division rivals
    - Winning a tough road game

They need to continue this play - particularly on the road. Ultimately the sniff test will come down to how they show up vs. the Pats in NE and can Tannehill put away teams when the games are even more relevant.

MonstBlitz, as much as I understand your point of view, I think this team has been playing on a level quite above what they've shown in the recent past. This type of football seems like it's sustainable, it doesn't feel like fool's gold. I think they're turning the corner, but we'll see...

I appreciate the concern but I don't need to be babied over football. They could lose the rest of the games and I wouldn't be overwhelmed emotionally.

I get the superstition as well. I don't think we're showing hubris over this streak. We're just gaining confidence in our coaches and players.

Guys, my point isn't that this team still stinks or that I'm trying to get out in front and say, "They're going to blow it, you'll see!" I just see all over this board both extremes. When they were losing everyone assumed they would keep losing forever and would have a terrible season. Now that they've won 4 in a row it's the exact opposite. I'm just trying to say, nothing is proven. Nobody is right or wrong yet about this team. They haven't definitively turned the corner.

But those of you who have made the point that it doesn't really matter, just live in the now and enjoy the ride are also right.

Let me say this...If Miami keeps in the playoff hunt and beats the Bills in Buffalo on Christmas eve...I'll be in this thread to say...THEY HAVE TURNED A CORNER! I'll probably be at the game. The pessimist in me thinks they have no shot in Buffalo in December. But boy will it make a great Christmas present if they do.

I have to agree with monstblitz. I the past 4 years we have been in similar situations as we are now. Riding a win streak and feeling that the playoffs are a real possibility. Then we shat the bed.

if we can keep playing like we did against the Chargers - the whole team contributing and fighting to the final whistle - then we have the talent and coaching to make a playoff run happen. But we also had the Cleveland and Cincinatti and Tennessee games this year where we played really badly. As we saw under Dan Campbell confidence and swagger can get snuffed out and disappear.

It's up to the phins to prove it is real.

what has got me feeling more confident this time round is just the number of players coming out of the woodwork to declare they believe in the system. No one seems to be going around asking "are you, or have you ever been a Gase believer" the players seem to be wanting to say it because it is true for them, and it seems a coded message from the veterans that they didn't believe in the previous systems,

I will bask in their essence if they beat the rams.

This season is mostly irrelevant. It's about Gase and Tannehill's development. So far it's a resounding positive.

Gase is building a winning culture. Gase has everyone on the roster competing. Gase/Joseph have taken a defense that was historically bad last season and turned them in to ball hawking playmakers. Our lack of depth isn't as bad as in previous season because Gase is creating a roster of plug and play scenarios where the drop off isn't as noticeable as previous regimes. Jones gone for the year? No problem. Cut two OL- No problem. I also don't think we are two OL from being 5-11. I think having Dallas Thomas and Turner on the team was the problem.

At the end of the day, Gase is building a strong foundation and culture, which reminds a lot of NE's initial Super Bowl run once Bledsoe went down. Mark my words, we will be playing in the AFC Championship game next season. As for this year, any extended play in to January will be a bonus. I've gone from being a big homer my entire youth to a negative nancy these last 15 years... And I'm FIRMLY bought in to what's unfolding in front of my eyes. Win lose or draw next week, or the week after that, we are still winning because of Gase and Co.

Think about this - Earl Mitchell was roasted last year.. He finally gets a chance to play after an extended absence and absolutely DOMINATES the San Diego OL and stops Gordon for a back breaking loss on 2nd and goal from the 1 yard line. Tony Lippett was early in year 2 of a 3 yr WR to CB transition, gets thrusted in to the role and is becoming a heck of a player, with an attitude to boot. Love love love Lippett. Maxwell gets benched and demoted, yet due to injury comes back and shuts down Brandon Marshall, Antonio Brown and despite penalties against SD has an overall solid game. Ryan Tannehill is showing grit and composure in the pocket, making truly elite throws. Jay Ajayi has gone from the doghouse to talks of being an elite NFL RB. MarQuis Gray is a stud, and blocks like a veteran OL. Kenny Stills has been utilized properly, even after his big drop against Seattle. Cam Wake is playing the best football of his life. Mario Williams is underperforming and the staff is limiting his role as Andre Branch becomes a major asset. Both Kenyan Drake and Grant have won games for us with stellar special teams returns. Jordan Phillips is becoming the reincarnation of Tim Bowens before our eyes. Kiko Alonso is a stud. I don't need to continue with the usual suspects in Suh, Landry Albert, Tunsil..

It's a bright ****ing future. We are going to be a dominant NFL team once more pieces get added to this roster under Gase.

We're like 11-1 with Albert, Pouncey & James playing together.

Anyone still crying about Thill letting us down and not understanding its the line, is full of **** at this point and is trying to push an agenda that is stupid and irrelevant anymore. Fact.

It needed to be said, carry on.

    Also...

Anyone "guarding themselves" against this run because of what's happened in the past, is a wuss. Go all in or go the **** home, pansies.

I'm concerned about the game in Buffalo. And if NE is playing for homefield advantage week 17..
