The Rams are finally breaking the seal on first overall pick Jared Goff this weekend and two of the team’s offensive coaches say that they won’t be making major changes to the offense to accommodate the rookie. Rams offensive coordinator Rob Boras said that the team trusts where Goff is mentally, so they will be using the same packages against the Dolphins that they used with Case Keenum as the quarterback. Quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke says the team will tailor calls to take advantage of Goff’s strengths, however. “We’re not scaling back,” Weinke said, via ESPN.com. “This kid understands what we’re trying to do on offense, he’s able to execute it. He had a good day of practice [on Wednesday], we expect him to have another good day on Friday. In terms of our approach as a staff, putting a game plan together, we’re obviously smart enough to say, ‘Hey, listen, we know what this kid does well, and we’re going to lean on those things.’ But we’re not going to scale back for him. We don’t need to.” A cynic might point out that it would be hard to scale back an offense that has the Rams ranked 32nd in points and 31st in yards through their first nine games of the season while still actually running an offense. Whatever plays they’re using, it would help Goff and the Rams immensely if last week’s uptick in rushing yards carries over and leaves less on the shoulders of the new quarterback.
Gotta think that Rams oline is gonna be fatigued after playing the Jets. Play action on early downs may be only way they have enough time to try intermediate to deep throws. Same for us, BTW...
The thing is, the only reason someone said this publicly is to create the illusion that they won't. If they truly weren't going to scale back the offense, why exactly would you say something about it. They'd just ****ing well show you in the first 15-20 plays. They won't want to expose the kid, he already looked like steaming dog **** in the preseason. Blitzes ate him up, so I expect us to go after him early. And I don't mean simple blitzes, give him to good stuff early and scramble his head. The defense must blitz the run too.
This one has all the makings of a trap. We have beat the last few teams many thought we wouldn't. This is one many think we should win. Combine that with a rookie QB which tends to be our kryptonite, it's got that familiar feeling us fans have grown accustomed to. I will watch tomorrow with very low expectations.
The thing is with a lot of crazy blitzing you might make a mistake and have the rookie burn you for a TD.....then you boost his confidence. I'd rather pressure him with the front four and hopefully that will be enough. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
