Can we agree to move past at least one tiny detail, that is completely being misrepresented in several of the arguments against Tannehill?

Over and over I see, "he's not worth the $20M he's making a year." Well, it seems some people expect Top 5 guys to make that money (actually he's making an average of $19.25M, but who's counting), so they then expect Tannehill to be Top 5, maybe Top 10, or else GTFO.

Let's see...the Top 5 guys average how much per year per their current contract (Luck, Palmer, Brees, Flacco, Rodgers...2 elites IMO)?

$23,465,467...Tannehill's contract is 82% of that. Top 10 averaging around $22.365M (still WAY more than $19.25M).

That is over $4,200,000 MORE, per year, than RT is making. For the record, Tannehill's salary is BELOW the average of the Top 32 Quarterback contracts (minus rookies) which is $19,807,063, so if you believe he is a below average QB, you have to believe he's being paid accordingly.

So when the basic "facts" of the argument are patently false, the rest of the post seems very disingenuous, ignorant, or intentionally falsified to add something to an argument.

The economics of the position dictates the salaries, not somebody's arbitrary view of what a flat number is worth.

His base salary was quite low this season, I think what people including myself feared was that he was going to continue to look like 2015 RT and the 1st 25% of the season RT and we were going to blow the oppurtunity to get out of paying him 20+M when we are already strapped for cap space. The fear is if he is a Dolphin beyond this season he will keep eating up space while playing at an average to below average level.

But now? Despite still showing inconsistencies most weeks he also is starting to look more confident and comfortable back there. He is moving better in the pocket, and he is attempting passes I dont think he was confident in attempting 5 games ago.

At this point Im doing a 180 on my stance that he should be sent packing after the season....the biggest reason I want us to keep him now is Adam Gase. Gase is finding the best in Ryan all be it sometimes just in spots, but he is a very talented QB whose biggest disadvantage was above the neck.

Adam Gase has helped Ryan play QB better, why stop him now?

The way his contract was structured, he starts counting $20 mil per next year, $20.17 on avg, and there are those of us that are not convinced he's worth $20.17 mil on avg yet, and the Dolphins can opt out this year.

His worth to this team will be determined @Balt, @NY and @Buf imo, show us something in these crucial games coming up vs a who's who of recent Dolphin playoff spoilers, and there will be no division anymore.

Tanny has talent that is finally shining thanks to a better OL and better coaching. I'm growing more convinced that the QB situation in Miami is fixed with each passing week, and the money spent for a good QB is worth it. I bet the Browns would LOVE to "waste" a large part of their salary cap space on a real QB, instead of staring 0-16 in the face.

If you think Tannehill is overpaid you should take a closer look at what less than $20 million per year buys you in today's NFL.
A one year rental on Kirk Cousinns
    Jay Cutler
    Brock Osweiler
An injured and rehabbing Tony Romo
    Tyrod Taylor
Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford who are scheduled to be FAs in 2018
Alex Smith at the end of his career
    Andy Dalton.

Then you start hitting the RG IIIs and Ryan Fitzpatricks of the world

The only guy on a long term contract that you can confidently say is an upgrade is Andy Dalton, and his contract is way under the odds. I don't know if there was a special reason for his low number. Tyrod Taylor is also probably better value but his contract situation gave the Bills a significant negotiating leverage when they signed his long term deal.p

Cousins isn't getting out of Washington. Even if he wanted out, the tag is again available. I'm not so sure anyone would cut Tannehill and pay a kings ransom in draft picks to get Cousins for 120m

Cousins knows that re-tagging him puts him at $23 mil per year so that's the starting point, not $20 mil. We would also have to bid against the Browns, the Skins, the 49ers and maybe a few others. Cousins is going to get Andrew Luck type money for a long term deal if the Skins don't lock him up.

For the same money as Cousins will get next year we will get Tannehill and a pro-bowl Safety (Reshad Jones assuming T-baum gets the extension done)

Well I did say 20+mil Pauly, and I understand they may franchise him again, my point was simply that Cousins is much better than RT, and he's the type of player you lay that money on, RT will count 20.3 mil against the cap next year, I'd rather add 4 mil to that and pay Cousins.

Half the guys on your list are cautionary tales as well, reasons why you don't spend that much money on non elite QB's, the other half I'd take over RT.

However, this season is not over yet, if RT plays well @Balt, @steJ and @Buf, then I'm all on board with keeping RT, but if he does what he has in the past, and comes up small in those games, it's time to move on.

Well.. Tannehill did his part today. Guy's clearly playing on a higher level than before. We'll see how he does as the playoff race heats up.

Need more consistent play from the defense though if we're going to make the playoffs.

Tannehill was fantastic today. Evading pressure, using his feet to extend plays, made some beautiful throws, only that one pretty bad throw that was almost a pick that I can remember standing out as boneheaded. He was fantastic today. Impressive with no run game, and 3 starting OL guys out. Impressive play. SF isn't the greatest team obviously by looking at their record, but that was still a really good performance today from Ryan Tannehill. He did alot of the things everyone wants to see him do regularly. Picked up right where he left off last weekend closing out the game in LA.

He looks like he's finally taken that next step, like some of us thought he would with better coaching and line play.

He won that game for us today. Defense and running game pooped the bed. Ryan delivered.

    That's my quarterback!

11 games into the Gase era, and Tannehill is playing significantly better than he has ever played in his career, and I have to wonder, is this just the beginning?

It is truly sad that there are still people on this board trying to ride RT out of town. I honestly think that there are certain people on this board that do not deserve nice things.

It should be pretty obvious now, that the things some of us were saying about Tannehill were true.

You may remember saying that he needed a couple of the following: good oline, commitment to run game, ability to audible, good coaching, and some others.

Well, what do you know, he's at least got commitment to run game, good coaching, and ability to audible, and he looks really good.

Shocking, I know. Also, I think some people should take back some of their criticisms of him, because it's becoming blatantly obvious that Tannehill's struggles were related to incompetent coaches.

Ryan evolving has been much more impactful than his surroundings. His audibling didn't matter, his OL was patchwork, his RB had a pedestrian game. Yet HE overcame all of this by moving well in the pocket buying time and making some amazing throws.

HE has evolved to the point where he doesn't NEED a perfect storm to play well and thats a very very good thing because this league is full of bad OL and Jay Ajayi has shown to be human.

Couldn't agree more about the coaching however, this dude truly is the QB whisperer...he has Ryan playing like a QB who can win football games in unideal situations. Something that has escaped him 4 years prior.

    Good times.

I don't need to be armed to justify the position of "wait until you're absolutely certain you have your franchise QB". Given the failures of the Dolphins for over a decade, I think it's a prudent stance to take. Tannehill plays the way he played today or in the SD game for most of the remaining games I'm on board.

But unlike you I don't wish ill on others or tell them to get off the board just because their threshold for believing we found our starting QB for the next decade is a bit higher.
