My PS4 Pro arrives Tuesday. I have a 250GB SSD ready to go, pending some amazing Cyber Monday deal.

I'm honestly just too scared that I'll break my PS4 if I open it up and try to change the hard drive out. I only play a couple of games at a time, so I'm content to just delete things as I go.

A ginormous review by someone who's played the series for a long time and has a lot of love for it. Fair and deep, and it has me itching to get to the store tomorrow morning. I fully expect the game to have its warts, but I also expect that for the most part, it will play the way that I enjoy, and hopefully, square will fix some of the things via patches. Apparently, there's another 8 GB patch coming on the heels of the day one that we knew about.

For all of the love that it has deservedly gotten, The Witcher 3 was a glitchy game that was almost unplayable for some people at first before CD Projekt Red did an awesome job of both fixing it and being transparent about it. Hopefully, Square will do the same. They seem to have the best intentions and aren't just there for a money grab.

I really wish I had planned better and taken time off work this week, but I already have meetings tomorrow and Wednesday that I can no longer change. I may actually still wind up taking Thursday and Friday off.

Anyone want my PS4 Reg with a 2TB drive for $200?

Now that I'm only getting the regular version (after buying the Kingsglaive Bluray on its own), I'm really regretting having my preorder at Gamestop. I have to wait until 10, when I could have otherwise bought it at 8am at Target and gotten home to spend most of the day with it.

This is the kind of game i actually want the guide for. Not to spoil it for for help... but to not miss stuff. I'm too old and have too much **** going on to replay a huge game like this. so i kind of want to make sure i get all i can on the first run... Not sure if that logic makes sense lol

Had I not bought a Logitech G29 (for PC and ps4 use) on Monday I probably would have bought a 2nd PS4 with that deal, and moved my current one to my 2nd tv.

I thought about doing this, but unless my progress is actively tracked then I don't care about a 100% playthrough.

Maybe on a replay in a year or two on the PC.

I still buy deluxe edition guides for most RPGs that i play . They're not only useful, but often beautiful, and i essentially collect them. i have about 15 years worth on my bookshelf now. and ill be spending about 18 hours on the road in a few weeks traveling to see family, so its a great thing to read (non walk through sections ) when its my wife's turn to drive.

So, it's real. And so far it's OK. I've only completed one story quest and two or three side quests, though. I like that the area is quite large, but dislike that there isn't a lot to do in it besides side quests. What was the purpose of creating all this space if you don't do anything in it?

The 9 GB forced update took a silly amount of time to download. I believe I began it around 7:30 PM and didn't finish until almost 10 PM. It's not my internet connection, either. It's PSN being goofy and unable to handle launch traffic. I have never, ever had good download speeds from PSN. The console experience is insufferable.

Driving the Regalia is pointless. You can't take it off road, and the game guides the car for you; you just hold R2 and watch. It's better to let Ignis drive the car.

The characters have a surprising amount of charm. I think it's the small banter between them.

I dislike the in medias res start-off. I don't know what the fire thing was in the beginning—probably a timeskip of the final boss—but starting off the game into the road trip, as opposed to beginning in Insomnia and showing us why the road trip needs to happen, is a weird choice. I get it, it's a game, put players into game-things as soon as possible because they're an ADD-riddled lot who complain if they aren't Doing Things Immediately. But it's still a decision I dislike.

There are small touches that recall previous FF games and show a deliberate attempt to include older FF fans like me. Safe zones where you camp recollect FF4's similar design. They even have a ringed-off circle (the campfire, supposedly) that recalls the save point design in FF4. You draw magic just like FF8. You can equip multiple weapons and weapon types like FF3. I like these inclusions and updates. They make sense and show a sense of series heritage.

Hopefully the narrative shapes up. The combat system is fun, and it's probably going to be expanded upon and used in FF7r. But the story needs to be there. I need more than "go watch a 2 hour movie to find out what's going on in the beginning." The game needs to tell us this, not rely on the player having foreknowledge.

I was surprised at the almost total lack of story at the beginning. Apparently, they just assume that everyone is going to watch the movie, and go from there. They also didn't give an explanation as to why the car breaks down almost as soon as you leave, but in addition to that being a tool for the developers, I wonder if there's a story reason behind it as well. Just speculating.

My daughter woke me up at 2:30am, so I went ahead and started downloading patch 1.02, and was shocked that it was done when I got up at 6. My question is, do I need to start over to gain the benefits? All the answers online seem vague. I played for about two and a half hours last night, but that included the tutorial and a lot of messing around and exploring areas that ended up being totally empty. I could probably get back to where I am in my save in 45 minutes or less without losing anything.

I share your feelings about all that empty space too. Even if it doesn't have a real purpose, at least put more enemies in there. Perhaps there are more at night? I camped at dusk every evening to stay safe.

Yeah, taking it slow. I was basically raised in FF so the nostalgia is strong for me.

My day 1 patch took 35 minutes to DL on PSN. 40 MB fiber

Love the banter between the gang. They did a great job with dialogue all around. Even random NPC line drops can be funny.

I'm shocked that they didn't flesh out the story more in-game. There's no reason not to IMO. I saw the movie so they have my buy in, but if I hadn't seen it I'd be lost AF. If they were worried about spoiling the movie, they should have disconnected it entirely from the timeline and put the game after it. It would still make sense, and might interest people more for the back-story.

Game looks great, and I love the monsters. Battle is fun and harder at times that I expected. I'm waiting to see my final thoughts on how complex it is.

Agreed on the empty map. I think part of it is that they tell us precisely where to go every time. I think they would have been more successful with an "area" for us to search. Right now it takes away the discovery factor found in other games.

Can't help but compare it to the witcher 3. That was a stunning game. This one feels different, more empty, but more magical and complex at the same time. There are different types of spaces, overhangs, bridges, claustrophobic times that the witcher didn't have. I really enjoy those, but the overall open world feels too straight forward and empty at the same time.

    It's an odd feeling.

If I wasn't a FF fan I'm not sure if I'd like it.

Also I like the music until I get into towns.

I also hate the town music.

I'm super bummed that you cant really control your party. I don't like Noctis. Come to think of it, I don't like any of the characters. They're all overly-used anime stereotypes to me.

The good news is that the moment to moment gameplay loop in that game is very entertaining. The hunts and the process of doing them is awesome. So I like that. I've done a crap ton of side stuff and I'm at 12.5 hours in and just now getting to that first big town. The story so far is whatever. I almost feel like I'd prefer they didn't add that Kingsglaive footage to the game. That stuff just seemed confusing to me.

I like it a lot. But I am a long time FF fan. I like the long car rides and playing old FF4 music. I'm not sure if a non-Final Fantasy fan would like the game or even get it. It's very weird and man that voice acting is bad.

I like the voice acting so far. Does something change? Because the acting seems very casual and conversational, which makes it more acceptable, IMO.

I installed everything yesterday, but I had an errand to run after getting dinner with my wife, and we wanted to watch the Cavs game (that was a mistake). So I'll watch Kingsglaive today and then start the game. I plan to have tomorrow and Friday off work, so I should be able to immerse myself quite a bit before next week.

It just sounds like an anime movie to me. It sounds like they hired anime people to do the voices. And believe me, I know that this stuff bothers me more than most. My buddy thinks all of the VO is great. It just comes off as super corny to me. The Big guy has that typical anime big guy voice. The hero has that calm cool guy voice. The dip**** sounds like a dumb dip****.

I guess I was hoping for a stellar performance like I feel FF12 was. And instead I got an anime. Which is fine. Just not... Awesome.

    No.Way.

There's a reason i stay clear of that stuff.

And trust me, I'm very aware that my tolerance for that stuff is lower than most. I'm just happy the actual gameplay is very solid so far. I really wish it was party-controlled instead of just being Noctis. Magic also seems to take a backburner to melee combat. This might change later in the game, but so far for me it's a sword slasher.

I'm not far into the game. Still in the original area, having played about 5 hours. The voice acting is very much what I expected. The cast are mostly professional voice actors who do work on US productions, though I wasn't familiar with any of them beforehand. I've been disappointed in the acting from the secondary characters, but not shocked. Maybe that kind of thing will get better once the game moves out of the rural areas. Also surprised, given Square's history and how other RPGs have operated in recent years, that you can't talk to more NPCs, even if that conversation ends up being very hollow.

Thus far, the dialogue all pales in comparrison to other major RPGs like DA: Inquisition and TW3, but again, thats not a surprise. Its a Japanese game, made first for Japanese audiences. I'm used to that, so its no big deal. It feels very much like a FF game. It fits.

I'm thankful that the patches seemed to have loaded and worked with my save file without any issue. Although the weird thing is that last night I was able to drive the car myself, while today the only option has been auto, with the others greyed out.

According to the guide, magic is intended to play a much different, less matter of fact role in the game than in any previous FF installment. You likely won't have any character who goes battle to battle using it, like you probably did in the past.

I drove the car once. Now i use it to collect AP points and listen to older FF game's music lol.

Also, that mechanic girl is like uncomfortably hot. Like for real for real. Is that necessary? Don't get me wrong, I like a hot girl as much as the next guy... but come on.

I got my Pro last night. Once you play that game with HDR on, it is hards to go back. I don't care for the visual upgrade as it hits the framerate too hard. So I play on Lite with HDR on.

I'm really enjoying this game so far. I came in with high hopes and low expectations, and it honestly started out touch and go but it's really developing along nicely. I'm not slamming hard on the story quest, because the side quests are really great. The monster hunts can be phenomenal. I killed deadeye last night. It was a gorgeous mission, though the battle was about anti-climatic (I won really quickly and it seems that this is abnormal for the fight).
