So Tannehill is out for the year. Making the playoffs wasn't going to be easy with him. I happen to be very optimistic about Matt Moore's ability to lead this team, he was a bright spot in that 6 win 2011 year. But even if they only manage one win in their next 3, or even no wins it's not like the team can put all their eggs in a 5th year QB that's never technically had a winning season (assuming they do win one of their last 3 games) who now has had a catastrophic knee injury. The Dolphins need a back-up plan, you'd assume. Who do we want to draft this coming off season? Or do we try to pick up a Free Agent QB in the offeseason? It's not a condemnation against what Tannehill has done for this team, but there's no guarantee he'll be back to even close to the mobility he had before that injury. I certainly hope he does, but the Dolphins Brass have to plan for the Post Tannehill era.
Nope. Right now they do not. At least, not any more than any team should be always open to bringing in talented QB's. The earliest the Phins will NEED to draft a QB is when they decide that Moore isn't a legitimate backup option. If he proves his worth then they won't NEED to draft a QB. After that the next time they might know they NEED to draft a QB is if Tannehills injury and rehab is going horribly. I mean, right now, they don't even know the extent of the injury, nor how Moore will perform. So no. They don't need to draft a QB.
It probably would be wise regardless with Moore's future being a question mark. We need a lot of help on defense but I'm game for drafting a QB in the 4th.
I think it's smart to draft a QB in the mid rounds regardless of Tannehill's injury. Keep searching till you find a great one. Moore simply isn't going to challenge Tannehill for the starting job. I'd prefer to find someone who can (besides.. it'll be cheaper to draft one than keeping Moore).
I can think of very few games where Matt Moore was the reason they lost. I remember him going all the way back to his Carolina Panther days and I appreciated his grit and toughness playing for that team that was nowhere near playoff contention at the time, for no reason of his own. I think your'e going to see Moore run from the pocket much sooner than Tannehill would. This could be good and bad but will probably cancel out between the two. On plays where Tanne would wait until the last moment to deliver a ball, Moore would already be gone a full second earlier. Same goes for sack situations, too, though.
I think Moore might have been on the same Carolina Panther teams as Chris Weinke, and, if so, I'd love to hear Weinke's thoughts' on Matt Moore.
Is there a QB in this draft that you know would be better, from day 1, than Doughty, who's had a full year on the practice squad already?
We have to replace Albert and probably Pouncey. That's more important than a backup QB. We really should replace Franks, also.
I can think of a lot of games matt moore lost... just look at his INT's. he's thrown almost as many pick 6's as he has tds.
Even if Tannehill hadn't been injured, they should have been ready to draft a QB in the middle rounds. That's something you need to do until you get someone you feel comfortable with as a backup.
Cutler or Romo look like legit options for next year unless Tannehill suddenly turns into Adrian Peterson.
No they dont 'have' to. they will probably take a late round flyer on one. with the holes we have taking one any earlier would be a waste and a big mistake. there is no reason to assume Tannehill wont be ready next season.
He's a QB. The demands of his ACL are significantly different than AP or any other player/position. He'll be just fine, barring any set backs (ie. Dion Lewis stress fracture). Joe Flacco was taking full reps at 8 months. No reason Tannehill can't do the same.
Let's not forget that Gase's SOP has been to give all players a fair shot. He cares not what people said or did in the past before his time. So He'll evaluate Moore based on what he sees right now, in his own system. I think it's fair to say that we should too. Maybe Moore is in dire need of replacing, but I think Gase has earned at least a little patience from us to see what he thinks and can do.
