Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is the frontrunner to become the next head coach of the Denver Broncos, according to a report from Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Joseph will interview with the Broncos next week, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. If the Dolphins defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round of the AFC playoffs, the interview will have to take place in Miami. If the Dolphins lose, the Broncos can interview Joseph in Denver.

Joseph, 44, was the team's second choice when they hired Gary Kubiak in 2015, according to Klis. He coached under Kubiak while with the Houston Texans alongside several coaches on Denver's current staff.

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring, defensive line coach Bill Kollar and assistant receivers coach Marc Lubick all coached in Houston while Joseph was the team's defensive backs coach. He was hired as the Dolphins defensive coordinator earlier this year.

Though Denver's head coach gig is Joseph's to lose, according to Marvez, he is not the only candidate for the job. The Broncos will interview Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan on Saturday and Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub sometime this week, according to Klis.

Other candidates that have been linked to Denver include Sean McVay, Anthony Lynn, Teryl Austin, Darrell Bevell, Sean McDermott and David Shaw. As of Tuesday evening, only Joseph, Shanahan and Toub have secured interviews with the team.

While I don't think our defensive problems are all Joseph's fault, I don't see why he is getting considered for a Head Coaching position for any reason other than the Rooney Rule.

because teams that have fired their coaches in-season would have quite the advantage

There's things beyond being a coordinator that teams look for in head coaches. Personality, communication with players, adaptability, leadership, etc, etc. just to name a few...

It's kind of selfish, but I really hope he doesn't leave. He's been able to work wonders with injuries (up to the point where nobody could overcome these injuries).

One thing that Joseph I'm assuming is responsible for as a he has a long history as a DB coach is the growth of our DB's. We have seen significant progress from some of our younger corners.

Side note, we love former Bengals DB coaches don't we?

That is because you just look at statistics and do not know the inner workings of coaching.

its all speculation, but if Vance leaves, we're probably staying in house for someone to run the defense.

We're bad because of injuries, not because of Joseph.

Thank you for your very presumptuous response. Joseph has done some good things and I'm sure he's a great leader, but I'd want to see more before making him a head coach.

    You are welcome.

You even proved my point with the, "I'm sure he's a great leader".

Just like me, you do not really know the inner workings of the coaching circle.

His name has been up in the air for a head coach position for a few years now. We do not know if he will succeed. Most likely not, because most head coaches fail, however, he has earned his chance. According to people who are in the know.

I've actually had that same thought. He knows the AFC. He is, and I doubt we'd find someone do disagree, a great defensive coach.

IF VJ leaves I would hope that Rex is at least in the mix to replace him. However, I've read that they might want to promote from within...

They may hire Shanahan, because they wont want to wait until after February 5th, to hire a head coach imo

As tragic as this may sound on the surface, I believe Matt Burke will be getting the first interview as DC if Joseph gets hired elsewhere.

Personally, I think this is just speculation on the writers part, based on the connection between Kubiak and VJ.

Tomlin got his job after one year as DC, but he made the D better, going from 19th in scoring to 14th, and going from 21st in yds to 8th, which incl run D going from 19th to 1st.

Don't think McDaniels goes back to Denver as HC.

I would do that, he may not be HC material, but he can do DC, and that is probably where he's headed, back to DC.

I think he'd love a chance at giving it to the Jets and Bills twice a year.

Like him or not, he is the kind of guy that players, especially defensive players, respond to, they like their leaders to have a little grit, spit and rough edges, and he's got all that, lol.

VJ also made the Dolphins defense better. Up until this last game Miami was ranked 14th. (Last year 19th). I'd guess without all the injuries the Dolphins would have finished around that 10th-14th area. They're currently 18th which is still better than last year.

Not sure if it's realistic but I'd love it. His defenses in buffalo weren't great but I'd love to see what he could do being able to focus on just defense again.

It's been posted somewhere that reports have our LB coach Burke tabbed as the guy to replace Jospeh in house - which likely means the nuts and bolts of the defense stays as is.

Continuity is important, but we an addition of talent in the worst way.

Could possibly be a favor from Kubiak/Elway as well. I agree about the Rooney rule. Went from a well respected DB coach.....one year DC with a historically bad defense under his belt....and that qualifies for a promotion? Not sure..

I really hope that isn't true. I would much rather see Rex as our DC. He knows the Jets, Bills and Cheaters better than anyone. If not Rex, then we need a proven DC...not another position coach.

What's Rex's record against the Pats? That 's the big dog to be chasing. The Jets are a mess and the Bills almost as bad.

Well, if a person were to go by yards, which means really nothing, they'd get those numbers.

I, and the majority of people who know a little something, don't use yards. The Dolphins didn't lose to the Bills 589-494 in their last game, right?

Good try, user of horrible stats.

Rex Ryan would be a bad hire IMHO. I think there are a couple of other people we could hire before we look to him to be honest.

I read an article that Vance Joseph was actually Elway's first choice (before Kubiak).

I cannot think as to where I caught this.

Elway then went with Kubiak because of the Bengals blocking Joseph.

Kubiak wanted Vance (I believe first as DC, then just on his staff).

The blocks by the Bengals (twice) prevented this.

Joseph's name has been around for a few years from what I am gathering for a HC position. This isn't a Rooney Rule thing (although it only applies because he happens to be a minority), this is a legitimate 'folks want this guy as a HC' thing.

I do believe IF he leaves for the Broncos position (that's where I see him as being a real choice), he will almost, without a shadow of a doubt, retain Phillips.

Phillips is sort of up in the air right now. If the Broncos go with a Shanahan or someone else, and Vance gets a shot at another HC position, I think we'd be in a fight for Phillips' services (just speculation on my part).

Phillips has said he still wants to coach. The next HC of the Broncos may be good to keep Phillips.

There is NO WAY I would consider Rex Ryan as a DC. No way, no how. It doesn't make sense. I mean, what's his record against the Pats? 4-12??

He can go somewhere else to try to catch fire. He may be a good coach, but he's sort of a 'has been'. Miami has it's own thing going, we don't need a retread.

This could be a real cluster for Miami if Joseph leaves. In all three phases, there's something building. I would hate for him to leave after only one year with these players.

Anyway, the Broncos make way too much sense for Vance considering Elway wanted him before (if what I read was true). Then they'd at least have some continuity because I think Joseph would retain Phillips.

    Then there are other scenarios:

Who will be Vance's OC if he gets the position? That's an entirely different argument.
