From what I've read of his statements made in interviews I'd be surprised if he jumped ship. He's conveyed in so many words he has a lot of work still to accomplish here, his appreciation of having been given the opportunity as DC, and his thorough approach to becoming fully qualified to be one. He didn't strike me as the sort to leave simply because the opportunity presents itself, but rather when he's prepared himself to adequately fulfill such a role. While I doubt he's experienced the lavish degree of royalty that Denver will likely come bearing to court him with, I don't believe he's in any rush to climb the ladder, as much as he is to succeed at each step along the way.
NO REX! I never want to see him in a Dolphins Sweater. I have all his behavior in the past and this newest Episode with the Timeout in mind. So please NO REX!
I think with all the injuries and the lack of talent in some positions(LB notably) Joseph has done a pretty good job.
Yeah, you're totally right on that. And that's what doesn't make sense with the two blocks. Maybe it was under the ruse (via the media) it was for a HC position several years ago, when it was simply a "lateral move" interview. Seems the Broncos tried to get cute. It's cruddy that coordinator positions get lumped in with position coaches regarding that rule. I guess this is why Joseph has simply been a DB coach until this year.
If Vance goes how about... man should I say this or not? Ok how about Rex Ryan as defensive coordinator? I think he's a very good coordinator but way overhead as a head coach.
There aren't many things worse than bringing in a Rex Ryan. The last thing a new coach needs is an older, brash coach that lets his players do as they please while constantly trying to usurp Gase's power and undermine the culture of discipline Gase cultivated. Rex would be the biggest man baby on the team (figuratively and literally) the second he got here. The LAST thing Gase needs is to find a way to babysit him and let the players know he's not an example to follow while worrying about any political back dealings Rex may be pulling to seize control.
I don't agree, I think Rex is going anywhere "hat in hand", he's just got fired from 2 consecutive teams as a HC, so he's had a healthy dosage of humble pie. This is Gase's team, I don't think there is any question of that.
I don't care about REX situation, I don't think Gase brings him in for his own wellbeing. We don't need Rex, there are better, younger minds out there that Gase could Tap into. Rex is old news, he should go to college and use his personality for recruiting.
Rex Ryan isn't a great fit for the Dolphins defense. He's better at being audacious with a talented defense than getting the best of or building a flawed unit.
I get that, I can understand your position, I happen to think that if he can focus on D, he's a very good DC, so I would welcome him, but I get your stance.
I understand peoples stance going against Rex, but as a DC he is proven. Much like what Phillips was before he had a few failed HC jobs. The last time I heard Phillips speak, he said he tried to be a HC, but it wasn't for him. He wanted to only be a DC now because that's what he was great at. I think Rex should have the same mentality, but you never know. If Vance does take the HC job in Denver, he would be a fool to let go of Phillips. If he did, I would hope we bring him in here and never let him leave. I would select Phillips over Rex.
Wade Phillips has 30+ years experience of installing defenses and fitting the talent on the new team, and his scheme is pretty simple and very flexible in terms of adapting to the tools he inherits. Rex Ryan is going to throw everything and the kitchen sink on the field, and he hasn't been great adjusting when he doesn't have the talent. I think it's useful to think of defensive schemes in terms of what sort of blue chip players/expensive buy-ins you need to run a scheme. One of Wade Phillips big successes is that he doesn't really have any- he's going to want a 5-technique DE(Bruce Smith, JJ Watt, etc.), but he's done perfectly fine without them- he'll make it work with a 275 pound 4-3 DE or a converted DE if he has to. Rex Ryan is like a money pit in that regard. He needs a giant 2-gap guy. He needs 300lb. guys who can still turn a corner. He needs best-in-class coverage DBs to facilitate all the aggressive blitzing. etc. and so on.
I kind of like the new younger approach that the Dolphins have been embracing. I'm tired of the retreads old school coaches. The NFL has changed. Not only in the schemes but also in the approach to players. Old school just doesn't seem to resonate with todays NFL athlete.
