The guys over at Bleacher Report have been running all season with their NFL1000 player evaluations. Now the 2016 Regular Season is done here are their rankings for the top players overall and position by position.

I'll list the overall top 50 player and then the top 10 for each position and highlight any Dolphins players who are close to the top.

"After 17 weeks of grading, noting injury replacements and position switches, and arguing among ourselves as to which particular attributes are most important at every position, the NFL1000 team has come to the end of its first regular season in this particular iteration.

It's been an amazing journey—the ability to assemble a team of 17 scouts to analyze and grade every player in every game has given us (and hopefully you, dear reader) unique insight into how football is played, coached and schemed.

Throughout the year, we've done comprehensive write-ups every week with our player grades and explanations of those grades. But for the regular-season finale, and in the work-up to the postseason (because we're not nearly done yet), it's time to hand out the awards for the best players overall. We have come up with cumulative grades, and you can now see which players we deemed to be the best at their positions and the best overall...

...We had specific criteria for entry into the year-end NFL1000 lists: Players had to play at least five games. There are instances in which players switched positions throughout the year (Green Bay receiver/running back Ty Montgomery is a prime example), and for the most part, we graded those players at all of the positions they played and kept them there for the review. We saw scheme changes with the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets defense over the season and switched them from their original 3-4/4-3 designations, so you'll see examples of Jets and Raiders players in our grades for both kinds of ends and linebackers.

As it has been through the season, there is no predetermined narrative with these grades. No mysterious "clutch factor." No tweaked-out quarterback ratings that defy explanation. Our grades are based on pure scouting, and lots of it. We grade the key criteria for each position based on a series of attributes and add in a score for positional importance.

In the case of a tie, our scouts ask, "Which player would I want on my team?" and adjust accordingly.

Is it a subjective process? Of course—that's what scouting is, and as we like to say, ties are no fun."

IMO.. these QB rankings completely destroy any credibility to their entire ranking "methodology". Just look at where they placed Matt Ryan after an unbelievable season (MVP-level). You could justifiably place Ryan at #1 this year.

    Unbelievable.. just a joke IMO.

"The likely MVP winner at this point appears to be Atlanta's Matt Ryan, whose numbers have been inflated by an outstanding supporting cast. Julio Jones has been brilliant when available, but more importantly, coordinator Kyle Shanahan's play-calling—combined with an impressive offensive line and pair of great running backs—has put Ryan in position to throw from wide-open pockets of space into wide-open pockets of space. Ryan was also lucky with bad throws that could (or should) have been interceptions."

Yeah you don't put up numbers like Ryan did this season solely/primarily because of a great surrounding cast. His 9.3 Y/A for a single season is 6th all-time in the SB era.. his 117.1 passer rating is 5th all-time in a single season (granted.. there's inflation with passer rating so it's not as impressive as when you adjust, but that's still amazing).

And let's keep in mind Ryan had a great surrounding cast in previous years too, like 2010-2012, and came nowhere close to what he did this year:
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RyanMa00.htm

I just simply don't see how you can reasonably put QB's like Luck, Palmer, Tannehill, Newton etc.. all above Ryan this year. btw.. Cam Newton has an average passer rating of 75.8 this year!! Sorry.. there's no credibility with that ranking IMO.

They grade out bad throws that were caught, great throws that were dropped, dropped INT so on.

Your argument is "I DIDNT WATCH THE FILM BUT OMG THE NUMBERS DONT MAKE SENSE"

Sorry if i trust people that actually watch.

No I don't, and that's actually exactly why I think their ranking (say of Matt Ryan) is far more trustworthy than these guys at BR who are trying to analyze every single play. I think the MVP voters have seen enough game tape of the QB's so that they have a holistic view of how well QB's perform, but they almost certainly haven't gone through things with a scalpel.

So.. why is going through things with a scalpel bad? Precisely because the more components to a model you include the more sources of uncertainty you are introducing, and you have to be VERY careful that the extra sources of uncertainty do NOT swamp the marginal increase in predictive power you'd gain by looking at things in greater detail.

You see this phenomenon everywhere in scientific modeling. Up to a point, adding more mechanisms increases accuracy, but start adding more and you get worse predictions.

So what's the specific problem with the BR methodology? I think it's really simple. Just look at what they consider, say for QB's:
    1) Accuracy (graded out of 25 points)
    2) Arm strength (graded out of 25 points)
    3) Pressure/Run Threat (graded out of 20, with pressure weighted at 15 and run threat at 5)
    4) Decision-Making (graded out of 20)
    5) Positional Value (graded out of 10)

OK.. forget about the actual rankings and just THINK about what they're doing here. First of all, why in the world would you grade arm strength when deciding which QB performed the best in a given season?? You want to look at performance, not some physical attribute of the QB!

And why is positional value a 10 out of 100 instead of more or less? Why are the other weights what they are? All those weights are just made up and aren't derived from any empirical study or some underlying principle. Guess what? Change those weights with the same grading method (and keep arm strength if you will) and you get different rankings.

Also, say what you will about stats but when you have a distribution of stats over many many players, seasons and years, you can really start to see how unlikely some events are. 9.3 Y/A is not something you get in almost any condition, and their vague explanation of Ryan's stats being due to some awesome surrounding cast doesn't hold water when you look at Ryan's performance with his 2010-2012 teams where he also had awesome surrounding cast.

So yeah I'd trust the guys who watch the games and just form a holistic opinion over guys who try and break down all kinds of tiny details but don't know how to combine their "grades" in any principled way.

And yes, Matt Ryan coming out at #10 really destroys credibility in their (IMO) obviously flawed methodology.

Palmer being "ranked" higher than Matt Ryan isnt even laughable its pathetic.
