Good news: this should reduce the number of "we need to get rid of VJ" posts. Either way, if Gase is worth his salt he'll do a Bill Belichick with assistant coaches and find a good replacement so it's just another test for our young (potentially great) HC.
Link? Probably true though. Mixed feelings about this. Maybe we can get Wade Phillips from Denver? I'd take that 'trade'.
"Vance Joseph sucks!" *Immediately gets hired to a team a year removed from a super bowl victory and is renowned for spectacular defensive play the last couple years, by a guy who has won 2 super bowls as a player*
I know, I know many of you are saying the Dolphins defense wasn't any good in 2016 but people, please use a little common sense. Miami lost Koa Misi before September was over, lost Reshad Jones in early October, starting cornerback Xavien Howard missed pretty much all of training camp then got injured early in the year missing most of the season, Byron Maxwell just when he started playing well at the end of the year got injured and missed most of December, and oh yeah Issa Abdul-Quddus was also lost for the home stretch in December with a neck injury. If that wasn't enough, one of the few bright spots on defense, Kiko Alonso, breaks his thumb and is playing the last month of the year with one hand essentially. You could dig up every great defensive coach in NFL history and they wouldn't have had success with this Dolphins defense this year. Miami had starters on the defensive line but the back seven was a second string unit for the most part let's just call it what it was. http://www.dolphinstalk.com/2017/01/who-is-matt-burke.html
Wade Phillips runs a 3-4 no? Don't know we have the personnel for that. (What limited personnel we do have)
So we have Burke lined up to take over. If that's the guy at least it will be a smooth transition. No new system
This is great news! Best news I have heard all day! Now, hire a DC with experience! No more position coaches! Changing the defensive system isn't a bad thing at all because our defense sucks. One of the worst defenses in the NFL. Being the worst means that **** needs to be changed, no excuses!
That's what I've been reading. Very smart guy and the players supposedly love him. If we don't have to change up the entire defense, get a few more playmakers, and get/keep some guys healthy I think the defense will be pretty good next year.
Counter to that, if its a DC with experience, an he's available, he failed at one point. Not always bad to grab a young position coach ready to move up.
Yeah experience is everything, like how Gase had all that head coaching experience before he came to the Dolphins.
Actually, our defense was middle of the pack. 15th. It does need to improve, without question, but people are focusing too much on yards. Points are all that matters.
Don't you know that all defensive coordinators in the NFL started as such? They've been coordinators in the beginning, and in the end. Everyone knows defensive coordinator is an entry position, there's never ever been a defensive coordinator that's been a position coach. Ever.
I'm reading Burke is a done deal and Gase worked hard to get him from cincy last season as he thought Vance was a flight risk.
How about checking the other stats. This was one of the worst defensive performances in team history.
That doesn't mean that we have to continually train position coaches to be DCs. We got lucky with Gase, not all position coaches are meant to be DCs, OCs or HCs. Look at our last experiment...Philbin! Hell, Philbin was actually a OC prior to being another failed Dolphin's HC. Promoting this LB position coach won't result in changes for next season. I'll call it now; our defense will be ranked 26-29 next year.
The premise of your original post was that you don't want the Dolphins to consider anybody besides guys that have already coached as defensive coordinators, which is a bad, short-sighted approach.
Do you remember all of the coaches that we took a chance on in the past 10 years? Do you want another "project" coach that needs training? Do you like having the worst defenses in the Dolphins history?
4th in 3rd down defense. 13th in interceptions. 17th in forced fumbles. 19th in sacks. Yes, the defense wasn't good overall. Yes, they gave up way, way, way too many yards. But they weren't as bad as some people believe.
Have you checked how they did against the run? 140 rushing yards oer game. It is also being said that this was the Dolphins worst defensive performance in franchise history.
So... what's going on with Wade Phillips? Seems dumb to get rid of him. He's done incredible things with that defense in denver.
I'm a moron, yet you can't grasp anything I'm saying. Let's try this one more time. Maybe you'll understand it this time. I'll go slow for you. We gave up a ton of yards. Yes, I understand that. I've already said that twice. But (this is key, so pay attention), success is measured by points. We were in the middle of the road in points allowed. We were also middle of the road in other categories that I referenced above. In conclusion, no, our defense was not very good. I get that. And there is plenty of improvement to make. HOWEVER, it wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be when you factor in other categories, especially the most important one. Also, we had a ton of injuries, and overall a poor linebacker unit. None of which are Vance Joseph's fault.
will be interesting dilemma. I think he's out in Denver but I also think Gase wants to have his own guy here, not a former head coach
Ok. I'll say top 15 with the infusion of new talent and players returning from injury and the fact that everyone will be more familiar in year two of what their assignments are
