I've seen more "you're a moron" "you're an asshat" and other general name calling in some of these threads than in a long time. (And it's been from only about the same 2-3 people) Mods still on Christmas break? lol...
Yep. Joseph is the new Head Coach of the Broncos. In the same article on NFL.com they said that Burke is our new DC.
Meanwhile, the Bills appear to be closing in on a deal with Carolina's DC Sean McDermott. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-closing-in-on-hiring-sean-mcdermott-as-coach
eve8904 seems to be under the impression that games are scored by yards allowed, and not by points. And he is calling other people morons.
YPG? Of course not. Then again, I can step back from the ledge and understand that a returning Reshad Jones and IAQ will mitigate that. I can understand how a 40-50 million dollar offseason budget can provide the FO an opportunity to infuse the defense with talent that we had sorely been lacking for a majority of the year. And I also understand that the returning players will mostly know what the defense will be at the start of training camp. These are things you can't seem to rationalize, and unfortunately a lot of your posts make it seem as if Vance Joseph slept with your mom or something.
Vance gets around. He slept with my mom too. I did get a trip to the playoffs out of it for Christmas.
I wish VJ would have stayed. However, the relative quickness in which Gase chose his DC (Burke) means he's got what it takes to succeed. I do believe not having to completely revamp the defensive system will help tremendously next season.
If the system is the same then it will only help him. Coaches have to come from somewhere and given the level of play we saw this year - of which some has to be attributed to coaching I think we will be ok. Also he has the whole offseason to adjust to his new role. Better than having to move etc as well. Now we just need to get some more talented players on the roster.
What's lost in all of this is that Adam Gase hired a staff with the understanding that Joseph wouldn't be long here. Very detailed planning. We got a good one in charge, guys.
The problem with our back 7 being so bad, is that running backs were going by our front 4 like they weren't even there, so either the scheme was horrible or our front 4 aren't worth a steaming turd, either. We need a DC with some GD credibility, but, alas, we probably won't get one.
Barring injury to Brady, pencil in another 2 Ls next year against New England. Belichick will just 5x outsmart another rookie DC. Experience = you got your butt kicked and hopefully you learned something from it. Hiring another rookie DC means we didn't.
Gase's personality trait positives and cool-guy motivation will fail when players figure out that they're playing on one of the dumbest 'Xs and O's teams in the NFL.
Watch that game vs New England again, from just a hard look at Xs and Os. Look at the plays and sequence that New England ran vs what we ran. Patriots put their players in position to be successful on almost every play. Dolphins only have success when guys make great individual plays. Dolphins only beat one team over 500 last year, and nearly lost 7 of the 10 games we won. We 'outlasted' bad team after bad team who then went on to get obliterated by other teams. The vast majority of Miami's success occurred because of great plays by guys and we almost never 'fooled' the other team. Our running game consisted of an extremely talented back ripping through arm tackles even when the defense was perfectly aligned to stop the (predictable) play that was called. Our passing game was very talented players winning their matchups even when the right defense was called to stop them. BTW, the plays that absolutely sunk Miami's chances in the playoff game were when the Steelers defense punk'd Gase and flabbergasted our blocking scheme.
Or, as you just said, our "back 7" was bad. Those players are counted on to make plays in the running game as well; linebackers and a safety at the LOS, corners when the runs spill down the boundary. The term that is more frequently used is front-seven, "back 7" makes it seem as if the linebackers are totally dedicated to coverage or bailing downfield.
Gase is a good head coach, but he is far from being in the Bill Belichick class at this time. Hopefully he can hire a top DC to replace Joseph but based on the number of bad DC's there are around the league and how many the Dolphins have had in recent years, there is no guarantee the Dolphins will find a quality DC to replace Joseph.
