    Safety meets Dolphins

"...Jadar Johnson has ended practices hoping to be approached by an NFL scout for an interview. He's been one of the most impressive draft prospects of the week, so it's no surprise that scouts have made it a point to track the Clemson safety down."

"But Tuesday, Johnson was extra excited to speak with one club in particular.

"I'm a Miami Dolphins fan. I've been a Dolphins fan since I was a little boy, so when they came up to me, that was a big deal for me," Johnson said. "It was like the career mode on the Madden (video game) where you can pick your team. I wanted to say, 'C'mon man, please pick me. It would be perfect.' I didn't tell them I was a Dolphins fan -- I wanted to keep it business-like. But I so wanted to tell them."

2017 East-West Shrine Game: Wednesday's West Team Practice Report

"South Carolina defensive end Darius English had an impressive rep in the one-on-ones with an excellent speed rush to the inside to beat Toledo right tackle Storm Norton. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound English needs to get stronger to be a run-down defender in the NFL."

"Arkansas defensive tackle Jeremiah Ledbetter has had a quality week of practice. In the one-on-ones, he used a swim move to get the better of Charleston Southern tackle Erik Austell. Swim moves often aren't as effective in the NFL, but Ledbetter showed a nice rip move to work to the inside for a win over Oklahoma State offensive tackle Victor Salako. The 6-foot-4, 278-pound Ledbetter is a thick base end in a 4-3 defense who could move inside to tackle in passing situations."

"UCLA cornerback Fabien Moreau is a player some team sources like. He had a mixed practice on Wednesday. On the positive side, he was running with receivers and preventing separation. He also had an excellent pass break-up on a crossing route. However, he was called for a suspect holding. Rather than shaking it off, he got into it with the official and continued to jaw at the official later in practice."
    http://www.walterfootball.com/eastwest2017practice6.php

"Baylor safety Orion Stewart (6-0, 210) had a hard hit and good run fill on the goal line to stop cold Wisconsin running back Dare Ogunbowale. Stewart could be a backup safety and special teams contributor."

2017 East-West Shrine Game: Wednesday's East Team Practice Report

"Mississippi State linebacker Richie Brown finished off is quality week. He is a tough run defender who showed well in the ground game scrimmage. Brown had a nice one-on-one rep to smother Smith on a short crossing route and slap a pass away. That was a key rep, as Brown will need to develop his pass coverage to get consideration as an every-down starter in the NFL."

"Florida defensive tackle Joey Ivie has definitely helped himself this week, according to scouting sources. They have been impressed with his well-rounded play as he has been tough against the run and has used quickness to beat blockers in the pass rush. Ivie is a fighter and he could be a good fit in a 4-3 defense as a backup three technique to start his career."

"Ivie wasn't the only Gators lineman to play well on Wednesday, as defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. had his best practice of the week. In the team scrimmage, Cox flew by Arkansas right tackle Dan Skipper to get a sack. Cox was close to a sack on another play beating Vanderbilt offensive tackle William Holden. Team sources feel that Cox has backup potential, as he played hard against the run at Florida while also coming up with some key sacks. They say that with Cox it isn't always pretty, but he has some natural football player to him and is better in games than in practice."

my words: just like his father

"Michigan safety Dymonte Thomas had a quality pass breakup coming over the top to slap a pass away. Miami safety Jamal Carter made a good break on the ball to fly over to the sideline on a deep pass, but he dropped an interception that hit him right in the hands. Carter is a strong safety who needs to show more in pass coverage to help his chances of making a NFL roster."

Dolphins met with the aforementioned Orion Stewart, safety out of Baylor, as well. De'veon Smith is having a nice shrine week, by all accounts. He might not be explosive or shifty, but I love his aggressive style of running. Ajayi for 3 quarters then De'veon Smith as a closer? Sign me up.

"Takeaways from the East-West Shrine Game

Florida Atlantic defensive end Trey Hendrickson claimed The E. Jack Spaulding Award for Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Throughout the practice week, the 6'4", 265-pound pass-rusher developed into the best defender on the field. His performance during the game proved to be no different.

Hendrickson struggled early against Oklahoma State offensive tackle Victor Salako, but the defensive end's quick first step and consistent motor eventually led to him making multiple plays, including a strip-sack."

"Senior Bowl: Tuesday Practice Report: South Team

Alabama tight end O.J. Howard could be the first Senior Bowl prospect selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, as Howard has top-20 potential. He proved it on day one with a tremendous practice. Howard showed his speed and athleticism to get separation with excellent hands, catching the ball away from his body. As a senior, Howard was vastly improved as a route-runner and blocker, and that could be seen in this practice. If Howard performs like this on Wednesday and Thursday, he could be voted Senior Bowl MVP.

Tennessee cornerback Cam Sutton missed the majority of his senior year with an injury, so there were many eyes on him to see how he would perform in Mobile. Sutton had a strong first day and played well overall. He is a feisty corner who competes well.

Auburn defensive tackle Montravius Adams and Chattanooga's Keionta Davis were impressive in the pass-rushing one-on-ones with multiple wins.

The linebackers on the South team also had some impressive play. Florida's Alex Anzalone had some hard hits and big run fills. Alabama's Ryan Anderson was dishing out some punishment to the backs and was excellent in smothering a screen during the team scrimmage. Anzalone was very injury prone in college so he needs a strong week of practice."

"Senior Bowl: Tuesday Practice Report: North Team

Indiana guard Dan Feeney had a rough senior year, as he missed time with a concussion and was forced to play some right tackle because of other injuries on the line. He had a solid start to the week on Tuesday. In the pass-rushing one-on-ones, Feeney had a nice win over Iowa defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson, mirroring a speed rush. In the run scrimmage, Feeney was tough opening holes and getting a push.

Ohio defensive end Tarell Basham had a nice start to the week. He did well in the one-on-ones with a bull rush through USC tackle Zach Banner. Basham also used a bull rush to beat Toledo tight end Michael Roberts.

Notre Dame defensive end Isaac Rochell did a nice job on day one in the pass rushing one-on-ones. He used speed to get upfield and strength on a bull rush. Rochell did well against Michigan guard Kyle Kalis.

Illinois defensive end Dawuane Smoot and outside linebacker Carroll Phillips had impressive starts to the week. Both were disruptive against the run and the pass. In the run scrimmage, Phillips had a nice tackle for a loss on a zone run where he knifed through the wall to stuff the back in the backfield. Phillips was more impressive in the pass-rushing one-on-ones, as his speed was a problem for offensive linemen.
Overall, Phillips flashed his speed and athleticism to get after the quarterback. Phillips, however, has real off-the-field issues and his team interviews will be equally important for his draft stock.

    - Temple linebacker Haason Reddick received acclaim from scouts for his start to the week. Reddick looked quick, instinctive and physical.

Temple guard Dion Dawkins and Western Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Moton are said to be "massive athletic cats."

    - UConn safety Obi Melifonwu impressed teams with his physical skill set. Melifonwu is a size and speed freak."

    "Wednesday Practice Report: North Team

Rasul Douglas is a corner with good size and ball skills, but he is limited in the technique that he can play. He is a big press man corner for the NFL, as he struggles to play off man or zone coverage.

Toledo running back Kareem Hunt broke down Michigan corner Jourdan Lewis with a nasty juke move to burst downfield. It wasn't all bad for Lewis, as he had some nice plays running with receivers, including a pass break up on Air Force wideout Jalen Robinette. Lewis also was tremendous snuffing out a screen to Robinette in the team scrimmage. On Tuesday night, Lewis (5-10, 188) told WalterFootball.com that he planned on adding some weight for the NFL and that should help him. Lewis could be a nice slot corner as a day-two pick.

Arkansas tight end Jeremy Sprinkle had a solid session on Wednesday with success in the one-on-ones. Sprinkle had a number of wins walling off safety Lorenzo Jerome for a few receptions. Sprinkle also had a nice day as a blocker."

    "Wednesday Practice Report: South Team

On Wednesday, O.J. Howard showed his versatility with an excellent performance in the pass blocking one-on-ones. He used his size and strength to wall off college teammate Ryan Anderson. Howard showed a strong base to stonewall a bull rush from Anderson. Howard's blocking was extremely impressive, and it illustrates that he is a capable three-down starter with special talent for the NFL.

The other tight ends on the South are impressive as well, with Ole Miss' Evan Engram having a superb practice on Wednesday. In the pass receiving one-on-ones, Engram got separation...
made a difficult hands catch... In the team scrimmage he continued to impress as he made a superb hands catch down the seam with the ball coming in about thigh high. It was between defenders, as Engram ran by one defender with a safety coming over the top. Engram had excellent concentration on the play. Throughout the session, he showed soft, secure hands, including a bootleg reception in the team scrimmage for a nice gain. This practice should really help Engram in his evaluation and cause more teams to target him on the second day of the draft.

In the team scrimmage, Alex Anzalone had two good run fills to stuff backs for no gains. He showed more athleticism to stay close to tight ends and backs in the one-on-ones. Anzalone used power to bull through North Carolina State running back Matt Dayes on a rush up the middle. If Anzalone can stay healthy, he could be a mid-round steal.

Clemson linebacker Ben Boulware really struggled on Wednesday, as he was abused in the pass-coverage drills. San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey burned Boulware to get wide open on a post route. Dayes got the better of Boulware on an out route, running an out-and-up. Anzalone didn't win all of his reps but he stayed close to his receiver where as Boulware was getting torched with 10 yards of separation on some plays. Boulware had some nice reps blitzing as he powered through backs, but he is a very limited player for the NFL with his pass-coverage limitations. He looks like a backup linebacker who plays in obvious rushing situations and on special teams.

Villanova defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon is physical specimen at 6-foot-6, 280 pounds. He is a raw football player, but Kpassagnon has a lot of potential.

Texas A&M edge rusher Daeshon Hall had his second straight quality practice session. He used strength to bull rush UCLA offensive tackle Conor McDermott. Hall (6-5, 265) has functional strength with speed off the edge. He has upside, and his best football could be ahead of him."

    "Thursday Practice Report: North Team

Iowa cornerback Desmond King had a solid day and did well running with receivers overall. He had an impressive pass breakup while blanketing Syracuse wide out Amba Etta-Tawo. King did have some issues covering Kupp, however. King would fit best as a cover safety, but in that role, he needs to add some more strength to tackle.

UConn safety Obi Melifonwu has had an excellent Senior Bowl, and he was impressive on Thursday. Melifonwu is a big safety who can be the eighth man in the box, but he showed impressive range in the team scrimmage. The Bears staff had Meilfonwu being the lone deep safety on a lot of plays, and he covered a lot of ground. Even though Melifonwu is big, he is not stiff as an athlete, showing some ability to open up his hips and run. After his week in Mobile, there has been some buzz about Melifonwu having late first-round potential.

Ohio defensive end Tarell Bashem....could be a nice developmental pass-rusher as a day-three pick.

Michigan defensive end Chris Wormley....could easily be a first-round pick with his size, quickness, and versatility to play a wide variety of positions on the defensive line. He had another good practice with multiple wins in the pass-rushing one-on-ones to finish off his week in impressive fashion."

    "Thursday Practice Report: South Team

Alabama tight end O.J. Howard could be the first Senior Bowl prospect drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft as Howard has top-20 potential.

Alex Anzalone has flashed this week as a balanced linebacker who can play the run and the pass. He had a mixed practice on Thursday. Surprisingly, he was stopped cold by North Carolina State running back Matt Dayes on a bull rush. In the team scrimmage, BYU running back Jamaal Williams beat Anzalone to the corner on a touchdown run, but Anzalone had close coverage on a route by Williams to slap the pass for an incompletion.

Oklahoma State safety Jordan Sterns has been solid all week, and he had an excellent play to fly across the field and limit a reverse to a moderate gain in what looked like it could have been a huge play if Sterns didn't fly over to make the tackle. Sterns is an intelligent player with upside.

Auburn defensive tackle Montravius Adams really helped himself at the Senior Bowl, and he was superb in the pass rushing one-on-ones Thursday. He had wins over Kentucky center Jon Toth, Tennessee State guard Jessamen Dunker, and LSU center Ethan Pocic. The win over Pocic was especially impressive with power and speed to get to the quarterback marker. Adams could have put himself on the second day of the draft after three good practices in Mobile.

Clemson defensive tackle Carlos Watkins was another standout on Thursday. He used a serious bull rush with speed to plow through Miami guard Danny Isidora. Watkins could be a nice value on the second day of the draft."

    UConn's Melifonwu, Ohio's Basham making top-50 push

"...stellar play of Ohio defensive end Tarell Basham and Connecticut safety Obi Melifonwu - a pair of defenders whose consistently superior play this week could have them ticketed for a top-50 selection in the 2017 draft."
"...Basham has been virtually unblockable, winning with his initial quickness, bend, strong hands and a variety of pass rush moves, including a wicked spin."

"Melifonwu has been every bit as impactful, showing impressive fluidity and range given his chiseled 6-foot-4, 219-pound frame."

"Temple's Haasan Reddick has generated a great deal of buzz with his successful transition from edge rusher to inside linebacker this week, but scouts are also excited about the play of cornerback-turned-safety Cam Sutton.

The former All-SEC pick has played both positions this week for the South team, showing instincts, range and hand-eye coordination to rip at the ball as it arrives.

Sutton was particularly early on in Thursday's practice, breaking up three passes over the first of a few one-on-one and skeleton drills, alternating between the two positions.

At just 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds, Sutton would seem better suited to remaining at cornerback in the NFL, but his willingness to try a different position this late in the process speaks to his selflessness and preparation."

    "Senior Bowl Recap

East Carolina wide receiver Zay Jones was superb during practice and phenomenal in the Senior Bowl game. He was the most impressive player on either team Saturday afternoon.

Kansas State defensive end Jordan Willis was the defensive MVP, as he abused the offensive tackles from start to finish. In the second quarter, Willis used speed to get by USC right tackle Zach Banner and get a strip-sack of C.J. Beathard. Willis then came from right defensive end and used speed to burn Pitt offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty for a strip-sack to close out the first half.
...a blue-collar player who could be a solid but unspectacular edge defender in the NFL.

One of the players who helped themselves the most at the Senior Bowl was UConn safety Obi Melifonwu. The size-speed freak was all over the field while dishing out some serious hits. In the first quarter, Melifonwu made a tough tackle on D.J. Pumphrey in open field with a rattling hit.

Later on that drive, Melifonwu flew over from downfield to be near a tackle and was in position to recover a fumble from North Carolina State running back Matt Dayes. Melifonwu should continue to explode at the combine and could end up getting first-round consideration.

Auburn defensive end Montravius Adams had an excellent week in Mobile and he finished it with some impressive play in the game. He stuffed some runs and was using his speed to fire into the backfield. The North offensive linemen really struggled with Adams' burst and athleticism at the point of attack.
In the fourth quarter, Adams pushed through some blockers to recover a fumble for the North. Adams has good size with excellent speed and athleticism. He has the skill set and flashes first-round ability, but motor and consistency hurt him in college. He could end up being a steal on Day 2, or early on the third day if he slips."
