ESPN 2017 NFL Power Rankings drop Dolphins to bottom third
    25
    by Kevin Nogle@thephinsider
    Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

"The Miami Dolphins, a 10-6 team that appears to be moving in the right direction after so much mediocrity, are ranked down with the teams that finished well below .500 on the season at 21st. The 22nd ranked team are the Cincinnati Bengals, who were 6-9-1 this past season. What? The explanation must clear up why the Dolphins are so low, right?"

Remember how we followed up Sparano's first season with more mediocrity?

Remember how we won a lot of close games last year and that history has shown that winning in close games tends to come back to 50-50 over time?

Until we follow up and show there has been a turnaround the national media will believe in history as being the better guide

Good, I want the Dolphins to be under the radar. That way they can play with a big chip on their shoulder and smoke teams unexpectedly.

  4. They are going against some of the best teams in the league next year. Winning against them will start changing minds

If we don't get some players, wthey may be right. Our schedule is killer and we have serious need on D and OL. Get the right FA and draft players, and we move up.

I'm glad they are ranked that low. Keeps the fire burning.

Also, I'm not sure I would rank the Dolphins in the top 10-12 right now either. I think 21st is low, but I'd put them at about 15-16th.

We beat one winning team this season and that was the Steelers after we knocked Big Ben out of the game. You can't just look at wins and losses. Maybe if we have a strong draft we'll have another winning season but I don't see it.

Who cares where they rank us. Do you guys get joy out of rankings? The only rankings that matter is the playoff seeding.

Nobody gonna say anything about Chef Tran's spicy chicken though?

Stuff the rankings. Just let us win. I'm a Spurs fan and despite being the best team in the NBA over the last decade or so they're consistently overlooked and underrated. I'd rather the Dolphins be the Spurs than some team the media loves but is a roller-coaster in terms of success.

Consistent upward trend please Mr. Gase and the DFO.

The way I look at it is you either believe in gase or you don't.The schedule doesn't mean **** because teams rise and fall every year as the NfC west is a perfect example.
Espn typically has us as one of the falling teams.I think gase is the answer for this team to be in contention every year and I have never been a big tannehill lover but If he keeps progressing like we all saw last year we will be in good shape for the next few years. The only concern I have and its a big one is tannebaum.

Since Shula's retirement...and even a few years prior to that, the Dolphins have received no respect from the sports media. At times it's been deserved, other times it hasn't been. I don't give a damn what some cocky arrogant sports writer thinks of OUR team who writes only to draw attention to himself.

I just want Miami to keep doing next year what we did this year....just keep winning!

I honestly think we capitalized on 2016 by winning winnable games on a brutally easy schedule. I don't think they're hating on us at all. 2017 reality will set in and Miami can prove to the world that they are for real. I like being the underdog.

He will never shed the choker label, I knew he was going to do it again which is hilarious because of all the crying about passing over this loser for years!!! If anything, we should have drafted Joe Cool in that draft lol!

I'm not saying that anyone else has to, but yes, when the media has a general happy/positive tone about the Fins, it gives me good vibes too. When I feel good about the Fins, I feel good about life in general. It perks me up. I'm an emotional guy, and I'm sensitive to this kind of stuff.

ESPN in particular has some sort of axe to grind with the Fins. They have for a long time. I just want fair coverage, but we haven't gotten that in a while.

    Well away from here
So I'm supposed to give a **** how ESPN ranked us? Given that in their infinite wisdom they changed the 6pm Sportscenter into a series of fire side chats between two anchors who had their own show that I never watched. So rather than actual highlights and you know sports I get to hear these two idiots ramble on about how "they" feel about this or that.

If I cared how "they" felt then I could have just watched the show they on before this. Now this is what I have get through to get maybe 10 minutes of sports - you know the thing I actually tuned in to ESPN for?

Their idea of what is relevant and or useful is less relevant then what I plan to do with the toilet paper after I've finished wiping my *** with it.

I'll give a **** about what they produce what they start giving a **** about what they produce. So, in laymans terms; not anytime soon.

We certainly get no respect lately, but it does not go as far back as you say. In Saban's second year, Sports Illustrated had us in the Super Bowl.

His & Hers was actually a pretty awesome show with plenty of highlights. The Sportscenter ratings were kind of in the tank and a lot of people were actually watching ESPN podcasts instead of the 6pm sportscenter. One of the most popular daytime shows and pods was His & Hers. For those of us who are active on social media, we follow BSPN, so we get highlights pretty much all throughout the day. Programming like this seems to be more popular these days.

To be honest the ranking doesn't surprise me for the following reasons:

    1. Our quarterback situation. There are enough people in the media that question whether Tannehill is a franchise quarterback or not, and there is debate over what ceiling we have as a team with him as our quarterback.

A further question is his knee injury, will it recover fully without surgery or will he require surgery and if it does will he be ready for the season?

So while Tannehill improved under Gase, questions still remain and he might even go into the season as a question mark depending on what ultimately happens with his knee.

    2. Our running back. Now I like Jay and hope he's our next stud running back, but until he backs up last season with another big season (I'm not asking for 200 yard games, rather a 1000+ rushing yards), then there will be a question mark next to our running game because we've all seen one year wonders before and I don't remember anyone speculating Jay or our running game breaking out last season.

    3. The defense. The old bend don't break motto can work at times, but we gave up a ton of yards per game and that needs to change if we are to take that next step. We have lost our DC from last season and have a new guy in charge, will he take the defense forwards? We have to upgrade our pass rush because realistically how long is Wake going to defy the odds and remain a premier pass rusher? Our line backing core and secondary could use an upgrade. Essentially there is a fair amount of work to be done on this defense if it is to become one of the top units in the league. Bend don't break is fine, but as the Steelers showed us in the play offs, all it takes is to come up against a team that can take advantage and they can cause a bend don't break defense a lot of pain.

    4. Winning close games. On the one hand this shows the signs of a good football team and hopefully that will continue into next season. But on the other, these types of games always have the chance to go the other way and at times last season we got lucky. Next season could be different. The Chargers went 9-7 in McCoy's first two years, but have spent the past two seasons losing close games, their 4-12 and 5-11 season records could easily have been flipped had they won those close games. At that point they win 12 and 11 games and most likely end up playing post season football - that didn't happen and they've remained one of those teams that are close but can't get it done. Last season we got it done, next season our luck and our ability to close out close games could be totally different.

Overall we had a good first year under Gase and I hope that next season will be more of the same. But there are enough question marks to warrant us not being ranked in the top ten teams. I think it is fair to put us in that group of teams that have play off potential if everything goes right. If Tannehill is healthy and progresses, Jay has another big year, our defense improves, and we close out games - then yes, we can have another big year. But a lot of things need to go right for us because we don't have a Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers like quarterback to carry us, or an elite defense to carry us. With that in mind we do have boom or bust potential in some instances, last year we boomed, the previous four were busts though not admittedly we weren't bad enough to land a top pick. So there is a lot of work to be done on this team if it's to become a title contender, and there's a lot of developing to be done if it's to become a title contender. Until that happens we will be ranked in that group of teams that have play off aspirations but could also end up with a handful or so wins. Let's face it, the Bengals have been a regular play off team but rank behind us in that list, one bad year and they are in the bottom third. We have one good year and rank in the bottom third, it's not that surprising in my book based on how this team is built.

While this past season was enjoyable because they finally made it back to the playoffs. The fact is that there is only one successful team each year and that is the team that wins the Super Bowl.
Every other team is a loser in the end.

As far as these 2017 rankings are concerned, I don't take them seriously at all. We have no idea who the Dolphins will lose or sign in free agency. We still have no idea how healthy Tannehill will be heading into the season. We also don't know who the Dolphins will draft and whether any of these draft picks will have an impact during the season.

I don't believe ESPN hates the Dolphins. They are simply looking at the roster at this time and view the team as mediocre. The fact is the Dolphins had a terrible defense and without major upgrades on that side of the ball and some additions on the OL and a completely healthy Tannehill, it is likely the Dolphins will have a worse record in 2017 than they had in 2016.

Fortunately we have free agency and the draft to upgrade the team and hopefully Tannehill is able to return fully healthy by the time the season starts.

The reason that I watch ESPN less and less is that they keep moving further and further from sports news and into angry, loud, or immature hot take sessions. That might be fine for a morning talk show, but for many, many years I enjoyed turning on Sportcenter at 6 and watching the daily news about the world of sports, most of which was handled in a serious manner.

When they started to abandon that, I turned to the NFL network for my football news, and it was great. Then, they started the same nonsense, and are even worse than ESPN most of the time. At least I can watch real baseball highlights on the MLB network in the morning still, without all of the opinion from adults acting like third graders.

I think ESPN was running into a lot of redundant content. Today, by the time 6pm rolls around, many people have already seen or heard about the highlights. And.....for the NFL games only come on Sunday/Monday. By the time 6pm rolls around on Monday, we've seen Football Night in America, Monday Night Countdown, NFL Network, Redzone Montage, NFL Live, NFL Insiders. There really isn't much highlights to go over Monday-Thursday at 6pm. Basketball is less and less interesting until after the allstar break. People are just consuming media so much more different. The popular shows on ESPN are the shows like Highly Questionable, Russillo and Kanell, Dan Le Batard Show, Formerly His and Hers. Those are the shows people listen to all day when they are at work. They became more popular than the highlights which most people have already seen via some other medium already. It's why sportscenter ratings were slipping. I used to wait to watch SC because I wouldn't see anything but local sports on the news. Now.....as soon as it happens ESPN posts it to instagram. It's a new day.

Sadly, I have to agree. That definitely doesn't mean I think we're 22. There were 12 playoff teams and we're better than the Lions and the Texans. So based upon that, I would say we're number 10. If there were teams better than that they would've been in the playoffs, no?

I'm agreeing with the point Pauly made because we need to prove it by now being even better next year and the next year and the next year. I don't care what ESPN thinks. Getting them to love us is a losing battle as they are based in Patriot HQ essentially.

Free agency grades from ESPN crush Dolphins re-signing Stills, Branch
    The Phinsider 15 hours ago
[IMG] I know this will shock you all, but ESPN does not like something that the Miami Dolphins did. Last year, they were panned for allowing players like Olivier Vernon, Lamar Miller, and Reshard Matthews to leave via free agency. This year, it is time to criticize the team for keeping their own free agents. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell is “grading” the free-agent deals as they are announced. In other words, it is time to throw out the hot takes as quickly as possible. For the Dolphins’ two re-signings, keeping defensive end Andre Branch and wide receiver Kenny Stills, Barnwell gives both moves “D+” grades. Essentially, he takes issue with the amount of money - without actually knowing the details of one contract ...

ESPN hates the phins or they hate horrific moves?

The stills move was fine. The branch move was terrible. Even the stills move can be questioned when you look at other needs on the roster and the depth we have and the resources we have invested previously in the WR position. Perhaps look at it with an open mind rather than a homer mindset and look at another non dolphins fan opinion.

Ok, and if youre not, thats cool. I havent read your posts. But Barnwell is an incredibly informed opinion and the deal for Branch moreso than Stills was a horrific deal. That's not him being a "hater." thats him giving his informed opinion. You can disagree with it. Who cares. its an opinion. yours is an opinion. You dont have to agree, but its a viewpoint.

I don't like the branch signing even a liitle bit but I love getting stills for 8 mil per season.
I know he is a third but he one of.the best at stretching the field. The perfect complement to landry and.parker.If thomas returns to.form and we.can get a decent guard or 2 we could have an explosive offence for.a change.
