I just cut Williams, Maxwell, Misi, Mitchell and Jordan. That leaves me with $54M to spend: http://overthecap.com/calculator/miami-dolphins/ What do I do next? I spend on immediate impact players at LB and the OL, as well as A DT. I don't wait for On-the-job training for positions that this team has lacked for years. I don't buy the top free agents in all these positions, but I upgrade for better impact. I use the draft for positions that I can mask, however, is really for the future, like TE and Corner, but I use my deft draft skills, knowing they will make an impact. I also make a statement and draft a qb in rounds 3-4. I do not have faith in Yates if Moore gets hurt, if RT has to have surgery. I select someone that has not reached his ceiling yet. Someone that can have a Dak impact. I also may have to be real with myself. Can I depend on Pouncey and Albert? Or do I cut my ties. In between I have to re-sign Stills, extend Jarvis and reward Jones. Who is ready to fire me?
When I first read it, I was thinking why cut Williams, he's a good RB seemingly getting better, lol, proving out what a forgettable stint Mario had with the Dolphins. I don't disagree, but not nearly sold on Howard the TE at all, he's a soft player, a lot of soft TEs this year, and there will be good solid defensive players on the board at 22, and Howard is a boom or bust project that never panned out in 4 years of college. Howard is a "Dion Jordan" type player, a player that is STILL trying to fulfill their potential after 4 years of college while making sporadic plays due to their tremendous physical gifts. Like DJ all over again, I find it amazing that any pros have this guy as a 1st round pick, highlights good, game tape bad. I can't fathom how someone can wrap their head around drafting a "superstar" TE in the 1st round that has exactly 114 rec, 1726 yds and 7 TDs in FOUR YEARS OF COLLEGE!, lol, at Ala ******* Bama no less, with his "biggest" season last year, 45 rec, 595 yds, 3 tds, nearly fell asleep that is so boring. My personal GM take on Howard is mid round WR project, I wouldn't bother with trying to turn this dude into a TE, I'd try and turn him into a slot WR, and I do think he has great "potential" there, but that's all he is right now. Whether we keep Maxwell or not I think CB is still a target, and this is a good CB class, and I'm not apposed to drafting a CB in the 1st. This is a good defensive draft, CBs, LBs and DL are all pretty strong this year, cover corners, playmaking LBs, passrushers, space eaters, it's all out there this year, and at 22, there WILL BE a quality defender of the one of the afore mentioned ilk, and in this draft, with the defensive needs of this team, it would be a shame if we passed up on one of those guys for a shot in the dark TE/WR.
I agree with most of what you suggest except cutting maxwell, he played very well this year after a slow start. Instead of cutting maxwell we should cut Albert. He is a terrible run blocker and cannot be deoendeed on to play a whole season anymore. Add to that the fact that he is due to make over 10 mill and we could save 8 mil of that by cutting him. I say get rid of him asap, move tunsil to left tackle, and use the money we save on albert to sign two top free agent guards. Sent from my F3111 using Tapatalk
I agree with Maxwell, but not for $8M. I also agree with Albert, but maybe he gets shook down, takes a cut and moves to G. WE have to be careful, because when healthy , Pouncey and Albert saved this season. But can we depend on them?
Based on recent history? Nope. An aging Albert is less likely to have a full and healthy season than Pouncey, but both make the OL pretty good when they do play. That is the rub. I'm less inclined to cut Albert though. If we get a solid Guard in free agency, then have the chance to draft a stud Guard at #22? Then I would try and move Albert for a 3rd rounder and kick Tunsil over to LT. Denver, for example, needs to rebuild their OL in the worst way, but not sure about their cap space. I'd like Howard back for a bit less money, like $6mil per year. Misi would be nice depth, but I don't want him penciled in as a starter given he can't stay healthy.
I wouldn't mind keeping him as a back up, at a lower rate, bit I agree his time as a starter should be over.
i would look at Ace Wales to replace Williams. Faster can pick up blitzers, probably better all around player and cheaper.
get what you can get or just cut Pouncey and Albert. re-sign Stills, extend Jarvis and reward Jones. we need to find a real weapon at TE & a MLB.
