The more things change, the more they stay the same... I guess you can still count on this Dolphins FO... Per Mando: "Sometimes it makes sense to not cut a good player. That’s what the Miami Dolphins are thinking now because the team has decided not to cut left tackle Branden Albert, after all. Although the team had made a decision to release the 32-year-old veteran, spoke to him Thursday morning to break the news, and Albert told his agents he was out, the plans changed sometime Thursday afternoon. So when the league deadline to report transactions came and went at 4 p.m., Albert was not on the transaction list. Branden Albert remains with the Miami Dolphins. Why? Per a league source with knowledge of the issue, it seems there is sudden and significant interest from at least one and perhaps other teams in acquiring Albert. And that being the case, the Dolphins are apparently going to pause and assess the possibilities. This doesn’t mean Albert will be with the Dolphins in 2017. That is not the plan. The Dolphins still expect to position second-year player Laremy Tunsil into their starting left tackle job. But if the Dolphins can gain something for Albert, that would obviously be the smart thing to do. This pause, by the way, comes with no certainty. If a trade happens, the earliest it could be consummated is March 9, the first day of the league year and the first day the 2017 trading period."
What's to complain about exactly? Pump a team for a pick and clear his ENTIRE cap hit rather than a portion
I am unclear on how that works. Do you take the dead space hot even if you trade the player? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
I thought they'd try to trade him, not just release him for nothing, so I'm glad to hear they are looking for a deal. A 3rd or 4th rounder seems plausible, even if Miami has to sweeten the deal with a 6th or 7th rounder thrown in. They need to use the freed up cap space to help get us a free agent LB and Guard.
Sometimes there isn't a trade market until it's clear a player is going to be cut. THEN a team jumps in. If Albert survives the next week...it means the team has a trade in place for March when the league year begins. If he's cut..well then it fell apart.
The fact that the front office 'changed their mind'. Sure, their entitled, and I actually think a trade is far better than cutting him, but it's rather unprofessional to tell a guy he's cut, then change your mind. It's obviously better for Albert this way than the first way, but still, figure it out up front guys.
Im not sure how this is bad. Im not clear on the difference in cap hits, from a pure cut to a trade Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
either way he'll not be with the dolphins next year. It'd be nice to get a 3rd or 4th rounder back from the ones we lost. Or a player in a position we need.
I agree. I wouldn't mind giving Albert and our 6th for a 3rd or 4th. It really depends on how many teams are wanting to trade for him.
Jacksonville seems unlikely. Albert would have to agree to the trade. Jax would have to extend him or guarantee a lot of his contract to give him extra incentive to agree. Plus they would have to give us something. Not sure 'Guaranteed' or 'extended' are two words you want associated with an oft injured 32 year old who already has 2 more years on his deal.
In the case of Albert, it's signing bonus of 1.7 mil per through '18, money he's already received from the team. Guaranteed salary is what would get "moved" in a trade, but he has none.
I dont see what everyone's getting wrapped around the axle over. Albert wont be with the Dolphins next year. When he's been healthy, he's been fantastic but the guy sprains an ankle tripping over an ant. All NFL teams have their end of the season garage sale...one man's trash is another man's treasure and all Miami's trying to do is see if they can get anything out of him before outright cutting him. Everyone needs to take a chill-axative
I hope this is the case. The FO was ready to release, and instead of bidding on him, a few teams who want him at this current salary jumped in. If not...this is a bad look for us.
No it doesn't. The Pats routinely do this. They announce a player is going to be cut or they see another team is going to cut someone and next thing you know the Pats have either acquired or traded someone. In this case Jax jumped in and that may have caused another 1 or 2 teams who thought they could get him in FA to jump in.
