When the Jets released center Nick Mangold last month, Mangold released a statement saying that he looked forward to “seeing what the future holds.” One thing the future has reportedly brought is questions about whether he’d be willing to move to another position. Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports that Mangold has heard from teams that are wondering if he would switch to guard. At this point, Mangold has rebuffed those thoughts in hopes of continuing to play a position he’s played well enough to be named to a pair of All-Pro first-teams since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2006. Mangold’s play hasn’t been at quite that level in the last few years, but he’s remained effective enough to think he’d be a good option for someone during the 2017 season. If that doesn’t materialize, however, Mangold may be learning some new tricks while acclimating to a new team. ME - With Pouncy a potential problem health wise every year, if he would move to guard would he be an option? That would give us a back up for center too.
I think that with the combination of his age (33), wear and tear (164 games over 11 seasons), declining play, and expected price tag, he's not a good fit for Miami in 2017. We do need a long term replacement for Pouncey, but we have Urbick as a backup to both OG and OC this season, and need two real guards to start. Younger guys, who will be around for a while. Not someone who we don't know that we can even count on for one season. If there's value to be had, I'm all for drafting a center from the 4th round on to groom.
As unlucky said. If we replace Pouncey it has to be someone more reliable, and given Mangold's age and declining play Mangold isn't a candidate. Also we saw how effective Pouncey was at guard, so signing Mangold as a a G seems terribly risky to me. We could end up with 2 gimpy Cs who suck at playing G.
Urbik was getting ABUSED the last few games last year. That guy Flowers for NE made him his 'rhymes with itch'. If we don't get a legit starting guard in the door here 2017 is pissing in the wind.
No, at this point, I don't see Larsen as a legit starting guard. He was 'depth' for the Bears and wound up having to start but people in Chicago adamantly said he sucked. He can't be our only NFL vet guard. We need a freakin' difference-maker (a Positive difference maker).
TJ lang needs to be added. We cannot count on drafting a stand out guard and having them be a difference maker in year one. the interior OL is desperately important. It being terrible completely ruins the consistency of the run game and when they suck in pass blocking it makes it so much harder on Tannehill when he is not able to step up in the pocket and is consistently being forced out.
Mangold would be a good get if he agreed to play at guard. I just don't see this FO paying alot for guard play. They haven't in the past and likely won't now. I don't agree with that plan, but that's how it appears. Mangold would fit what seems to be their plan. Vet. Low risk. Low cost. And can also play C in Pouncey gets hurt again. It's a good plan. Stop gap, absolutely. But you can't spend big money everywhere. I'd have loved to at LG at least. But I just don't see them doing that now.
