Fans, just calm down. Brady is still the QB in NE, and Miami believes that not only did they have to address the age of their De's, the best way to beat Brady is to beat Brady. A lot of fans here, like me, over thought the pick. Gase probably thinks he has enough on offense, esp in year 2. The defense was atrocious. How many 11-12 play drives, esp to start a game was there? I think Miami continues to fortify the defense because it is clear they were determined to fix it, with glimpses of this in free-agency. This was not a sexy pick. But it was practical. The new regime cut Dion Jordan, that void from 2013 (and having no one here from that class) had to be filled. That was a must. It is future-thinking. Because I think everyone here agrees, this team is not SB-ready in 2017. Pass rushing and stopping the run, after 2 1/2 seasons of a porous defense is too much. So the question is if Miami stays on defense (which I am confident they will), where do you see the pick landing?
An intriguing name here would be McDowell in round 2 (another DT in round 2). I think they missed with Phillips
Like the OP pointed out....It's defense, we need to fix our defense. If by some miracle Forrest Lamp is available in round 2, I think we will take him, if not....BPA on defense.
And Gase isn't the only one calling the shots. In fact, he's not even the biggest voice in the room. I like the pick. I'm a fan of Peppers and I hated that we passed him up, but the defense had a bunch of holes, DE being one, and they filled that hole with an extremely talented player. Let's see what they have in store for tonight's pick...I can't wait.
Unfortunately I didn't get to dive into this stuff like I normally like to this year but the more I see about him the more I like the pick. He has a spin move compared to Freeney and he sure looks like Wake the way he can get crazy low, even wears Cams 91. The obvious concern with him is his trouble against the run game. Doesn't seem to be particularly strong at the point of attack. He needs to put on some lower body strength and that should help him considerably. Kind of excited to think about Wake coming from 1 side and Harris coming from the other side. Pretty scary if you think about it.
He's definitely a work in progress when it comes to the run. However, he will be a starter on day one on 2nd-3rd and long situations. Wake and Harris meet Brady in the middle....Oh please...oh please...oh please...haha
at the end of last year Phillips was balling, he was blowing up lots of plays. I hope he can build off that.
Aren't you the one who was stating that the Dolphins needed to draft offensive players in the early rounds of this draft? Funny how now you are telling others to relax, when it was you who seemed satisfied with a bad defense and wanted to add offensive players before the draft.
But he's not freaking out because the Dolphins didn't pick the way he wanted them to. That's the point of his "calm down".
Kids got a good motor from highlights but he wasn't against AAA talent week in and out. He suspect against the RUN which is a big problem we have had last few years so that worries me. I'm not a pro scout so I hope it works out but this wasn't a big sexy name and there are still some of those sitting out there to my surprise!!
I don't see Phillips as a miss. I think he is a rotational guy that because of his big frame, is best equipped to have a snap count. I LOVE McDowell, and I think that he would make Phillips much better because of a decrease in workload.
exactly, thanks danmarino. and if he read the post, I admitted I read into much what they should do. This was back to basics for Miami, stop the run and rush the passer. I expect more tn now that I see where they went.
I don't know, man. I expect a lot from my 2nd rounders. We haven't really hit them that well. Jarvis, yes. Phillips and Howard still have to prove a lot
Great post. And that's something that scared me with Lamp. In the SEC, you don't face scrubs. that is a div that gets your NFL ready
We should expect a lot, they should be starters or at least heavy use players. Phillips and Howard need to take steps this year if we are to compete at a high level, and whoever comes in this year needs to contribute as well.
Oh we can name 10 2nd and 3rd year starters that need to step up: 1. Phillips 2. Carroo 3. Parker 4. Drake 5. Howard 6. Tunsil (move to T) 7. Grant as a returner 8. Duarte because of potential 9/10 Lippett and McCain consistency
That would be sweet I love Sherman, it might be cheaper to get him then we think but at this point I fear it is just a pipe dream.
The concern is, that he didn't seem to shine against good SEC teams. I don't really know, I only watch Alabama. Haha
