I've got this vague childhood memory of Bruce Smith physically preventing some rookie or something from laying out Marino with a blind-side late hit. Did that actually happen?

I recall him almost taking off Marino's head and held up in a game.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure it happened. I think in the 90's. I remember thinking it was a respect thing for Bruce, like, you just don't do that to Dan Marino.

He did. It wasn't all that dramatic. It was actually kind of funny. He had Marino wrapped up and I believe there was either an interception or a fumble after a catch, with the Bills recovering. Smith was headed to try and sack Marino, got there after the ball was out, kind of watched the play happen as he still had his arms on Marino. When possession changed, it meant any Dolphin was up for grabs as far as hitting them for a block. There was no real need to hit Marino as he did not run after fumbles or INT's, being slow, a little older and too valuable to use as a tackler. Smith just kind of whisked Marino around to the other side of himself so an oncoming Bills player could not hit him as it looked like he might do on the run back. The announcers laughed about it as it was kind of funny. They said Smith was like" No, no, it's okay, I've got him." as the Bills would-be blocker ran past them. I don't think it would have been a blindside hit. I think Marino saw him coming and Smith just basically made sure he got out of the way. Respect. It was in the 90's, I'll say early 90's but I'm not completely sure.
