Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (BBC America) If you love Douglas Adams (based on his books), and a show that feel unlike any other......do yourself a favor and give it a try. Funny and crazy.
Then you must watch. The producer also said don't worry everything gets explained by the end of the season.
Hope you don't mind me joining in, I was hoping for a few tips, USA TV has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years, almost to the point where our lot over here have given up and buy all your good stuff. Suits has been missed by the main networks though. Lord knows how. Anyhoo..... I picked up on Superstore whilst I was in the USA a month ago. Could be even better than it is......there are some cracking visual jokes in it !!! I'm on to series two now. Love it !
If anyone was still on the fence about it, I want to say that the show has gotten progressively better since the start. The newest episode had me craking up the whole time. They've changed the tone and found their stride since the premier, and my guess is that they might have scrapped the whole concept of the show and gone in a different direction than they originally intended. What they've ended up with is a show that's both very goofy and smart, but has a few inconsistancies and plotholes that you just have to ignore and move on from. While its not yet as good as some NBC comedies of the past, its now on the right track to attempt to carry the torch of past greats such as Night Court, News Radio, Scrubs and Community, and might get there in time.
Finished watching season one of both Billions and Good Behavior, and will watch season two of each to be sure. Billions has a lot of baseball references dropped in which may or may not be a coincidence with Paul Giamatti as the lead. Good music too, including the near perfect Cover Me Up by Jason Isbell. Good Behavior has some very interesting characters, is stylish, sexy and not afraid to show the flaws for the characters. I like that, a good balance of underlying good tempered with the truth of challenges and honesty.
I'll be checking out Powerless, a new show on NBC set in the DC universe about a group of people who help regular people effected by the consequences of battles between super heroes and villains. The previews seem a bit over the top, and I'm MUCH more a Marvel guy than DC, but the show stars Alan Tudyk, who's one of my favorite people in Hollywood, and Danny Pudi, who I loved on Community.
Anyone catch "Taboo" yet on FX? It is only 2 episodes in, starring Tom Hardy. It's fantastic thus far. Really great show, excited to see where it's going. Acting is superb, and really excited to see they haven't censored any curse words either, feels more organic.
I'm not sure what to think about Taboo yet... One thing is for sure, everything seems dark and grungy. At first I was having a little trouble understanding them, but now that I've watched the 2 shows I get it.
Watching a show called Humans on AMC for the first time tonight, and its interesting. I guess its a BBC show that had an 8 episode first season a year ago, and AMC is now running its 8 episode second season for the first time in the US now. It deals with synthetics in an alternate universe Earth, and their "lives" and feelings. I'm going to continue to give it a look, though it seems to have a really large regular cast, so jumping into the middle I'm totally lost.
It'll be difficult to follow if you've not watch the first season, which IMO was the better of the two seasons to date too. Not sure if there's going to be a third season, it's kind of wrapped up at the end of the second one but there's scope to continue the story if they want to.
I'm caught up on Humans and think it's pretty good. They just started the new season last night but I haven't watched it yet. I will today when I get home.
The first season of Sneaky Pete on Amazon was really good. Some far-fetched stuff but **** it. It's entertaining as hell and Giovani Ribisi is fantastic.
The premise has me interested, but I hate Giovani Ribisi as an actor. Just doesn't interest me whatsoever... Canadian TV show called "Cardinal" is really good. It's a crime-drama centered around detectives hunting for a serial killer. I'm really like it so far.
I was going to say that I always find Ribisi to be a creepy little guy in most of his roles, but then I looked at his IMDB page and realized that the only thing I've seen him do the last 14 years is Avatar, lol. Most of my impressions of him are from the late 90s, so maybe he's improved as an actor? Doubt it, though.
Not out yet, but really looking forward to American Gods when it starts in May. Brilliant book, which will be hard to match, but Ian McShane as 'Mr Wednesday' is a promising sign.
Crashing on HBO is fantastic. As someone who has lived that life the past couple of years, I really enjoy seeing a lot of the scenarios portrayed on the show, so far. If you ever wanted to know what being a road comic is like, they have nailed it, so far.
McShane is perfect for the role. Really looking forward to this show. I don't know how they're going to pull it off as a series, but Bryan Fuller is pretty much bulletproof. As far as quality, anyway... His shows never seem to do well in the ratings, sadly.
Finished season 1 of "Fortitude" on Prime. If you like psychological thrillers with tons of plot twists and sudden violence and gore, you'll enjoy. Some excellent performances (at times) from Richard Dormer, Michael Gambon, and Stanley Tucci. Surprised Todd hasn't been all over this one.
Watched the first episode of American Gods yesterday, and was impressed. Closely faithful to the book, and a promising start. It's early days, but there's signs this could be the next big thing, a la GoT. Might take a few eps to get going though, as whilst the first one was visually stunning, it would be fairly confusing if you're not aware of the source material. The showrunners definitely don't believe in providing much in the way of exposition.
American Gods is one of my favorite books. I'm excited to watch the TV. I'm currently reading the comics because why not get the same story in three different formats? Season 1 of Legion and Season 3 of Fargo are both great. Also looking forward to Twin Peaks return.
I'm really disappointed two episodes in. This show is a ****ing mess. The narrative is so disjointed as it bounces from the fantastic Mr. Wednesday and Shadow (main) narrative to the anthology-esque god plots (really hard to describe). If I hadn't read the book, I'd turn the show off and watch something else. I heard it gets better around episode 4, but I don't know how much of the audience will put up with it. It's a shame too, McShane is amazing.
Season 2 of F is for Family on Netflix (with Bill Burr and Justin Long) comes out May 30th. Funny stuff if you like twisted humor
Well, none of my shows got cancelled except the two that went into the season knowing it would be their last, so thats a win for me! Next year is likely the final one for most of what I watch though. So far, the only new show in the fall lineups that interests me is Inhumans.
I enjoyed the fourth episode of American Gods. It's a bit of a departure from the episodes so far, with it almost exclusively concentrating on Laura Moon's backstory, but it was good to find out more about her, and Shadow's, history (and it filled in the blanks from one of the earlier episodes). It was mainly new stuff as well, with most of her backstory not being in the book, and I think it worked.
Just finished the second season of Hap & Leonard. I enjoyed it, Purefoy and Williams do a good job of playing the lead characters, but I didn't think it was as good as the first season. Been renewed for a third season.
Bloodline season 3 was good. Felt rush, but they had to fit 3 seasons into 1 since they could not afford to film in florida
Finished Season 1 of "Animal Kingdom"... sort of a mash-up of "Smith" and the robber gang from "Point Break" being led by ... the Mother is wicked and the boys without conscience. Fans of Breaking Bad should really enjoy this show as "J" evolves into a "Cody".
Big Little Lies was a pretty good drama mini-series. Stellar cast. Starts off seeming like it might be annoying but it moves you through it, to the point you go from possibly wanting to turn it off to suddenly wanting to binge-watch it. Goliath was friggin awesome. Cinemax's Quarry offered a promising season 1. Not quite the replacement for Banshee but good nonetheless. Canada's crime/drama/suspense Cardinal was worth the watch. Hulu's mystery/crime/thriller Chance was enjoyable as well. Hugh Laurie doesn't disappoint as a forensic neuropsychiatrist. Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet was a bunch of fun. Similar fun-ness to Amazon's Mad Dogs which I'm surprised no one's seen yet. Queen of the South just couldn't seem to hold my attention unfortunately.
