Like most teams (except the Browns and one side for the Steelers), the Dolphins have helmet logos. New Dolphins don’t, yet.

“Maybe that’s our way of saying ‘You’ve got to earn that logo,'” coach Adam Gase told reporters on Wednesday. “That was kind of something that, talking to [equipment manager Joe] Cimino about things that maybe have been done that way in the past, and we were just kicking around some ideas of doing something a little different than we did last year. We felt like that was one of the things that kind of came up that a few of us thought was a good idea and we’ll see how it kind of goes.”

The Cowboys have done that for years, requiring rookies to earn the star. It may seem trite and hokey, but it’s an objective indicator of progress, giving young players an indication that they’ve arrived. Or, as the case may be, haven’t arrived.

Either way, the dolphin logo has suddenly gotten more scarce in Miami. And if a player can’t earn the dolphin, his career may soon be sleeping with the fishes.

I like it. I would like it even more if it was the same for every player day one. Vets and rookies. Yeah you could give it to the vets in the afternoon or next day or whatever to give them their respect, but it would be a good reminder that there is always competition.

I thought the same thing. It's good, but the way you described would be even better IMO.

I love this mentality. In the Marine Corps no one is called a "Marine" until they pass basic. During boot camp your referred to as a "recruit" and even though you wear cammies you don't get to wear an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor on those cammies. On the day you finish training your senior drill instructor hands you an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor for the first time.

LOVE this. It's how it always should have been with the sheet-show former coaches. I am becoming a HUGE Gase fan.

    Armondo's take on this:

As the Dolphins try to build on their first playoff appearance since 2008, their relatively new boss is committed to laying the foundation for sustained success. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald explains that second-year coach Adam Gase has achieved quick success by stripping away an entitlement mentality in the locker room.

Basically, Gase wants the players to believe that everything must be earned, from a spot in the starting lineup all the way down to the logos on their helmets. By creating an environment where everything must be earned (and, in turn, anything can be earned), players are always focused on doing their best.

Given that attitude, is it a shock that receiver Jarvis Landry (a close friend of Giant receiver Odell Beckham Jr.) has shown up for offseason workouts despite his obvious desire to get a new deal? Landry knows that if he’s not there, someone else will have a chance to earn his reps. So he need to be there to show Gase that Landry deserves to keep the job and, ultimately, to get the kind of contract he wants.

That’s one of the more tangible positive consequences of selling that no-entitlements vibe to players. In a league where every coach wants every player to opt to participate in optional workouts, Gase has his players pre-wired to choose to show up. And, in turn, to choose to do everything that needs to be done to allow the team to thrive.

People keep mentioning Landry not holding out, and maybe my memory isn't right on this, but I don't think anyone has ever held out in the final year of their rookie deal.

In fact, I don't remember any player ever holding out for their next deal, it's always being unhappy about the current deal, players generally like hitting FA.

It's a business power play, but you need leverage to pull that off, Landry holding out has no teeth, because he can't actually go through with it, the Dolphins would still have his rights if he held out, so it's a completely empty threat.

I wonder where the source of this concern is, because the truth is, if Landry did hold out, that would be all you need to know to NOT resign him, because he would be showing 2 traits, selfish and foolish, a bad combo(TO).

In this day and age of modern sports, it seems to me the only thing any professional sports player seems to care about is their paycheck but at some point, coaches need to find a way to start tapping these individuals' egos and I really like this move by Adam Gase.

About some 20 years ago, when I was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, a friend of mine and I were talking football and of course I was on my soapbox about the Dolphins and my friend used the word "weak" to describe the Dolphins. Of course I took offense to her description but as the years have passed, her comment has always been like a splinter in my mind and for the last few years I've come to realize her comment has had some merit.

Offensively or defensively, teams that have had championship success have had one thing the Dolphins have lacked...aggressiveness. The Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Seahawks, Packers...either offensively or defensively, they had a measure of aggressiveness that intimidated their opponents...an aggressiveness that's been lacking in Miami for years in my opinion.

Hopefully with Gase sending the message that you have to EARN your Fin will tap into these players egos and instill an aggressiveness that will turn the tide and have other teams dread seeing us on their schedule.
