Tank-Talk (Sam Madison on Cordrea Tankersley)

On today’s “The Audible” joe Rose asked former Dolphins CB Sam Madison his opinion of Cordrea Tankersely. Here’s what Sammy had to say….

Rose: I read someone said Tankersley is ‘a little stiff’, does Sam worry about that stuff?

Sam: Xavien Howard is playing really well. Tony Lippett is behind Xavien Howard, though Tony had more snaps and gained more experience. Xavien probably starting opposite Byron Maxwell. So, you can put Tankersely on Special Teams, and let him learn his position throughout the course of the season. You don’t really need him to be a #1 starter right away and have ‘let down’ plays. In Jets road game, Maxwell went down. Howard went in to cover an on-fire Brandon Marshall and he did a phenomenal job.

The same exact thing is true now. We can develop this guy [Tankersely]. He has college experience playing the slot. We have been struggling in slot situations the last couple of years [guess Sammy doesn’t think McCain has played well there, and he doesn’t sound confident McCain will be great there this year either]. Says he thinks we can mix Tankersely in there at slot. This way he has opportunity to learn on the fly but not have that pressure placed on him right away.

Rose: Down the road… he is a 3rd round pick and has all the makings.

    Madison agrees quickly. “Big. Fast.”

Rose thinks you give Tankersely more snaps than anybody in the secondary this pre-season.

Madison thinks Lippett needs more snaps as well. They want competition at this position. Before, Madison felt WR was the deepest spot on the roster. Now Sam is watching the defensive backs play and thinking we are really deep at CB position right now.

Rose agrees. The best he has felt about the CB postion in a long time. [Count me in here too, and with the Safeties in the second half of the year when TJ returns, I think this secondary could be very very strong].

I didn't think ''stiff'' when I watched him closely, he's pretty tall with long limbs..the guys a late third round pick, he aint gonna be perfect...perspective..

what I think his biggest strength is his ability to locate the ball at the last second and deflect..gets his head turned around in time, doesn't get beat deep, and uses the sideline as a friend..

Personally, I think Tank will be our best CB, maybe not this year as Madman suggests, but I think he's got the stuff.

I also think we have far more depth at corner than we've had in years. Even the Safety position will be far improved midyear.

Lets just hope we don't get hit with the injury bug like we did last season. That was brutal.

To me, I see a guy dripping in coverage abilities, real shutdown CB potential with real ballskills, zone may be a learning process for him, and maybe he never excel at zone, we'll see what happens with that, but he could be a "go cover that guy" guy, and they're a more rare breed.

When I was watching CB tape he stood out to me, with his coverage/ballskills abilities and I was all for drafting him, I would've taken him in their place.

He "looks" a little stiff, but that's the thing, he "looks" stiff when he really isn't, some guys have a little awkward style and I think that's the thing with Tank.

I think it was Key?, not sure but it was pointed out that he does well when he understands what he needs to do, and struggles when he he has to figure it out on the fly, and that's fair, but he seems to earnestly want to be a good NFL CB, and imo, if that truly is the case, then he will be, his ceiling is about as high as it gets for an "island CB" imo.

I read somewhere he is a press corner, I sure hope they actually use him that way instead of 7 to 10 yards off the ball like we have seen some in the past.
