Can Miami apply for a shorter suspension?

No. I don't know why, or the details, but it was reported when we signed him that the suspension is what it is, and cannot be shortened.

He can practice and play in preseason games with the team until Week 1, and then he's banished until our 9th game.

He either applied for and lost an appeal, or he took this suspension, either way it can't be changed.

He took it. Plead guilty in court and then chose not to fight the suspension.

Was it really? That's unusual. These 8 game suspensions are often shortened to 6 games on good behavior.

Appealing a suspension doesn't have to be read as saying that the grounds for the suspension were unjustified. I believe it can also be an appeal on the basis of good faith cooperation and keeping your nose clean, so to speak.

I'll take your word for it but it does strike me as very odd that his suspension is considered un-appealable. Oh well. Back half it is, then. Maybe that'll give an A.J. Hendy the opportunity he needs to come alive?

He could have appealed, he chose not to, you have a limited time to appeal.

Yes, very strange. You'd think the league would do it proactively for some of these players instead of forcing them to go through the appeal process. Somebody should really tweet somebody so we can get the full story on this.

Well, this is the 3rd time he got busted, how are you going to get the benefit of the doubt when you're a recidivist.

Well, the time of the suspension tells all, 1st time you go on a list, 2nd time is 4 games, 3rd time can be 8 games or a full season.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ended-8-games-by-nfl-stemming-from-may-arrest

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/15504818/rams-safety-tj-mcdonald-arrested-dui-crashing-parked-car

The ESPN story says that he was arrested for DUI after he crashed into a parked car, but that the DUI was for something other than alcohol. He had an earlier arrest for reckless driving and pot. It looks like his suspension may be for the two incidents combined, and therefor the higher number of games than would be typical.

Also, the 1st time you fail a test, their is no suspension, you get put on the random testing list.

That looks like all the same incident to me. Arrested in May 2016, charged in September 2016, plead guilty in January 2017, suspension handed down March 2017.

I'm not sure where you got pot from those two articles, besides an aside about Tre Mason at the bottom of the ESPN article. You may have to break it down for me. My brain is a little fried. The lack of thorough information about the arrest and the length of the suspension doesn't help things.

Edit: It could be the 1-2-3 of the incident that got him an 8-game suspension. First, a DUI. Then possession of an illegal substance. These are both legal matters that the NFL can then apply to their own evaluation. THEN, he violates the league's substance abuse policy and that gets him an even heftier suspension. It may have all happened at one point in his life, but the snowball of that one night became an avalanche by the time he got suspended by the NFL.

Yes, my bad. I somehow skipped the naming of Mason and read it as McDonald. Like I said, I don't know all of the details of how it went down. Just thought I'd look around.

The arrest ended up being 2 strikes, DUI, and drugs, and as I pointed out earlier, as per the CBA there has to be a 1st time where there is no suspension, and you are put in the program, it's kind of similar to Dion Jordan, he had a 4 game suspension and failed again and it turned into an 8 game suspension.

Either way though, you don't appeal this, that looks bad, while drunk, with drugs in the car he hit a parked car, and then fled the scene.

It's an appeal that you can never win, and it looks bad, it looks as if you have little regret and that you don't want to pay for your sins, which can look bad to perspective employers, it also keeps it fresh in people minds if you appeal, when you just want it to go away.

OK, thank you, and I agree with your points also.

Frankly, I think that there should be consequences for players appealing anyways. If a player appeals by doesn't have a valid case or evidence why the suspension should be shortened, he gets games added to it. Limit all of the nonsense where they get reduced for no good reason.

I think the idea was to secure some safety depth for the long run....
TJ is a proven vet, a good open field tackler.... he'll be available and ready for both the Pats games and so on. Hopefully he's a welcome addition, as apposed to being a desperate need due to injuries.
I have a good feeling Nate Allen can be our next IAQ... to some extent.
We can suffocate the best offenses when Jones is healthy.

Yeah, with the way that our schedule worked out, he'll be there for our four hardest divisional games, plus Denver and Kansas City after the bye. Not sure he'll do a lot vs Oakland and Carolina, having been away from the team for almost two months at that point. Likely worked back in before he's given serious work, barring desperation with injuries.

I have much higher hopes for Allen than many others, also. He had a serious injury that he had to work his way back from, and didn't do much for a long time, but last December, as part of one of the better teams in the league, he suddenly had 25 total tackles and 2 interceptions in five games. Hopefully, he's now back all the way, and can be solid for us.

I don't have high expectations..it's going to be difficult for a player to come out of nowhere really and just make an impact first year in system when he's not practicing in system..or practicing at all for that matter...I'm interested to see what his game looks like..

Well, he will get all of TC and PS to work with the team and learn the D, then he'll have 8 weeks to study, so knowing the D shouldn't be a problem, and he should keep himself in tip top shape.

Also, he's a FS, if he were a LB or DL I would worry about readjusting to the physical pounding, but that's a much lesser thing at FS.

TJ I think, is the perfect compliment to Jones, I think they will do quite well together.

After signing with the Raiders as a free agent in 2015, he tore his MCL in the first quarter of his first game with the team. He tried to come back, but only played in four games later in the year and didn't do much.

Then last year he suffered a quad injury early, and was limited or out of action until December.
