As camp opens, there are going to be all kinds of reports on every position battle in the preseason. I find one position matchup particularly interesting.

The Dolphins have arguably their best player, Jarvis Landry lining up primarily as a slot WR. One of the best camp battles this year should be at nickel CB. Last year it was Bobby McCain who primarily manned the inside CB position. I think he'll probably be there again, but the FO wants him to earn it, and they brought in Alterraun Verner to compete. Verner is going to push McCain. McCain has to play better and many think he will. If he does not, AV has the ability to take his job.

But whichever of them get the nod, they will have ample opportunity to improve by covering Jarvis throughout TC. Jarvis will not only push them physically, but mentally. He's a physical presence on the field and he'll tell you about when he beats you. He gets every edge. I think that has the ability to really help these guys be the best they can.

Overall, I am optimistic about our CBs. I like the players we have back from last year--I really like Tankersley's potential, and I have been high on Lafayette Pitts since he was in college. This unit has all the makings of being deep and very good--and besides BMax (and Verner, now), these guys are young. I'm not saying they are ready to be the South Beach Legion of Doom...but they can be a top unit in the NFL.

Our talent at WR, esp in the slot, can really help their development.

You've got to have the horses though, Landry will help any CB trying to cover the slot but he can't take a C and make him a B.

The slot CB's in 3 years haven't been much to write home about, and they've all played vs Landry in TC, McCain for 2 years now, so while Landry can help, he can't change who the player is.

This team needs to start drafting well, our D is like a merc squad, most of the talent on D was not drafted by us, of our top players, only Reshad was drafted by us, and that was a while ago, Suh, Wake, Timmons, Kiko, Branch, Max are all bought in players, where is our home grown talent on D?

Hopefully Harris, Tank and Kwon can change that, because for us to go anywhere, that is going to have to change, this year, the buying in of talent is going to dry up the next couple years with the big cap numbers, so drafting well will be the key to future success, as is the case virtually all the time for all the good teams.

I wonder what the plan is for Tankersley? Reports are that they are putting him in at the slot. I don't think he'd be particulary good, right now, covering quick guys in that capacity. Tight ends? Possibly. Bigger WRs that teams are putting in the slot? Maybe. Twitchy guys? Not really sure. He has a reputation for being a physical corner, sure, so maybe he can wipe the small guys out that way. But I worry about him getting his hands on them in the first place.

Coming out of college Tank is one of the most physically gifted CBs. He excels when playing man but can get seriously lost in zone (questionable football intelligence). He is the kind of player that if can learn and anticipate, the sky will the limit. I would not be surprised if we do not see a ton of him early on in the season, but as he grows as a student o the game, I anticipate seeing more of him.

I hadn't heard they were using him in the slot, and I agree, that wouldn't be a good move, he wasn't good in the slot in college, and he shies away from tackling RBs.

He's a boundary CB, that's where he excels, press man.
