Yep, definitely a good sign. As you said, sooner it hits FL. after moving off of Cuba the less time to strengthen. Everyone should keep an eye out for another shift that changes things but if there isn't one, you're looking at nothing more than conditions we get in some summer thunderstorms.
Oh my..... If I were her I'd fear the inevitable deluge of idiot calls from this MUCH more than any effects from the storm itself. God speed to your little lady.
Is the Storm going to effect the TB Rays games??? Are they calling for heavy storms in Tampa/St. Pete area?
Doc Masters posted some nice storm surge maps for the west coast in his current blog; http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1030&tstamp=200808 I had noticed last night in the visible satellite loops that the upper level high, an anticyclone, had moved to the south, nothing clicked. This am I was snooping satellite loops looking for why the west side of Fay seems depressed, and found Doc Masters new blog up and he spoke of the ULH... I had forgot about the upper level high. It makes sense.. when it moved off of Fay, all the models adjusted by not predicting hurricane strength BEFORE crossing Cuba anymore, like they HAD been doing since the two systems hooked up, two days back. Anyway, the ULH is creating a 15 knot wind shear on the west side of the storm, inhibiting convection development in that direction and that is good.. all that very warm gulf water is being denied. Here is a storm surge map for Naples and Lee County from Dr. Masters blog... Darin.. you paying attention? The Key West radar, the inhibited west flow is hurting Fay... convection is have a hard time wrapping around and forming the eye wall. I use the 1 hour rain rate as a tool for what the storm is doing right now.. where is the energy.. watch it blow up..
When is the game BD.. tonight? you maybe might perhaps hold your mouth just right get lucky.. but don't bet the house on it.. tommorrow.. forget it.. you might be lucky to have power.
Thanks for the storm surge map Marty! Mom's in Ft. Myers. She and her husband think that because they're not in a flood zone, they're fine for storm surge. Then again, they also sat at the dinner table (in front of the sliding glass doors) during Charlie and watched their house get surrounded by falling trees.
My mom called and said they've already closed everything down there for tomorrow. My pops works for Lee County Electric and he's already been told to plan on heading out to Sanibel. Apparently they are expecting the bad stuff.
eh, I really like him, but they were married just a few years ago. Saying step dad at this point in my life doesn't "feel" right. Great guy when he isn't giving me a panic attack during hurricanes. Man, they've barely got that place back together from Charlie. Captiva was basically torn in half.
Funny stuff. My 75 yr. old Grandfather during Andrew refused to leave his house AND refused to let us board up the windows. He was an old pilot for Eastern Airlines and a stunt pilot/sky diving exhibitionist in his day. Just a little cocky. He kept telling us that "Andrew's nothing, I've flown a plane through worse than this storm!" LOL. We had to get him a heavy dose of his "happy hour" medicine (Johnny Walker) and wait for him to pass out before we could go out in the squalls to board up his friggin windows.
Awesome I might have to try happy hour medicine next time. My step dad's a former guard at Rikers Island, so he's got a bit of that fearless thing going too.
My dad slept through all of the ones we were in....Andrew kept me up all night...not him, he snored through the whole thing. Friggin coconuts and all kinds of stuff are hitting our windows he didnt budge..
It sure seems like these meterologists pleasure themselves everytime a hurricane is about to hit us. They love the spotlight more than T.O and Favray combined.
A few things to also consider: Being prudent should never be considered "freaking out"... from the article you linked:......"But the storm's projected path keeps moving farther west -- as of 5 p.m., the forecast cone includes no part of South Florida except the Lower Keys. But it's still too early to celebrate a near miss, with forecasters reminding residents that Fay's behavior seems similar to Hurricane Charley that walloped Florida in August 2004. ''You always worry about hurricane amnesia,'' Gov. Charlie Crist said Sunday afternoon, urging people to remain calm, alert -- and not complacent. The state's emergency management director, Craig Fugate, was more blunt: 'Too many people have died in a `minimal' storm.''.......... My grandfather was a policeman in Miami when they had minimal early warning. Back then, by the time it was known just how bad a storm was it was way too late for alot of people. Yes, I agree that the media does seem to enjoy sensationalizing severe weather right along with everything else they report. Nonetheless, it does serve a purpose. Remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that someone isn't out to get you. Besides....D you're a young guy still. When you get old you'll be more cautious
WOOOOOT the ride has begun!!! I am getting wolloped and I'm way away from the real action at Cape Romano. I have been awake for a couple hours, the rain pounding on the window has kept me open eyed. We just got a strong feeder band cross over me, I even went out into it to sniff the air.. (us Florida crackers think we learn stuff from sniffin' the wind). Anyway, when I came back inside, ol Keenen on tv was talking about a tornado warning for the cell that just passed over me... yikes! here is this mornings landfall loop, from Miami. mannn, I can't wait for sunrise.. I live on Indian River, and therefore get a nice looong view. Watching the wind come across the water is impressive.
Thanks Mal. ..no fun in that.. went out on the dock and almost got blown into the river.. Damned thing has slowed down, what yesterday was a one day affair, now may be two days of miserable gusty rain.
me too Eric.. this really is about the best case scenario, little wind damage, lotsa rain.. be interesting to see how Okeechobee Lake reacts to a day long 50 mph push, north to south. I wonder how much the lake will rise on the south levees, and how well the repairs went from Wilma.. that they just finished.
Thanks for the good news Marty. We're getting soaked down in West Palm, some decent wind, but not too bad so far. We may only work 1/2 a day. I hope.
I am about to get the rain event that you just suffered, here is the 1 hour rain rate.. the little red area training up the coast has just arrived here in Jensen.
Down here just north of Lauderdale its pretty steady rain and winds. HA, I wish I only had to work 1/2 a day.
Supposedly this one has more potential to be a biggie. At least we're getting a nice-breeze today and its always fun to see the snowbirds panic over a minor storm
