With THIS being the case...not 100% excited about the opportunity and WANTING to play again, then I don't want him. LIke I told solders when I was in the Army, if you don't want to be here then get out...I don't want you. Same thing applies here.
It could just be his agent using a negotiating tactic, right? Don't appear to be TOO EAGER to sign Jay and see if they meet our initial asking price. Or it might just be pure speculation by the sources. I understand why Cutler would want the best situation possible if he is going to return to the NFL.
Here's the thing though- how do you pay a guy $13M a year to come in and compete against the $2.1M/year starter ($1.75M guaranteed, $375k in bonuses)...when that $13M guy may not get the actual nod as QB1? Moore has been very loyal to this team for a long time now and it's a slap in the face if the backup makes almost 7x what he does. Matt is a good guy but heck, I think I'd be calling my agent to make some noise if that's how things unfolded.
Plus, Cutler is a 34 year old who tore the labrum in his throwing shoulder last year. I get why the Phins are sniffing around him - but I don't think the $13+ million is worth it.
Bargaining tactic. Probably from agent. Cutler contacted Dolphins/Gase after Tanny's injury. So clearly he is interested. Now they are negotiating over a salary. This is the part where the agent tries to get a higher price than the Phins wanna pay. It helps to claim his client wants to pursue a media job, and isn't 'all in' on the Dolphins. Because I doubt Cutler contacts us about QBing unless he actually WANTS to QB.
Yup, but MM8 has had 7 years to rehab. Judging by his ability to hit the deep ball still, he's recovered well. Cutler tore his in November and decided on sports broadcasting the following May. One has to wonder how much effort he actually put into recovering/rehabbing that thing.
The money thing will kill this Cutler deal. He's looking to GET a payday, not contribute TO a team. Taker mentality.
Cutler can stay right in that booth. I'll take whatever this season gives me without him setting back the franchise at least 2 years.
I think I'm too close to this thing. Going to go radio dark for a couple days and opine when I see an actual move that's been made worthy of opining on.
Matt Moore maybe a true back up. Meaning maybe he would rather relief than start the whole year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Maybe, but Cutler also said he wanted to be a guaranteed starter, aside from getting starter money (according to the media, like everything we are speculating about here). That, if anything, lowers interest from a team. I think he may just want to play only if everything is exactly his way and I don't think he commands that kind of respect...unless a team is very desperate with a QB down and no backup to speak of.
Gase seems to think he needs Cutler, that he can be an effective QB in Miami. I guess we'll find out which one of you guys is right as the season plays out. $10 million plus another $3 million in incentives is not a terrible deal given how expensive starting QBs are in this league. Probably gets more money for winning record, playoffs, Super Bowl appearance.
