How come we play Baltimore every year, even though we don't play against the AFC North?

We played the AFC North in 2013 and in 2016. In 2013 and 2014 both Dolphins and Baltimore came in 3rd in their division, meaning that in the subsequent year (2014 and 2015) they played each other.

We played all other 3rd place teams from the conference, so Baltimore, Jacksonville and San Diego in 2014 and 2015.

I thought we had some NFL rivalry to play them every year

Yeah, Baltimore and Tampa Bay are two teams that consistently own us whenever we play them.

Let's not forget Houston! 1-7 all-time against them. Also the Giants have our number.. 1-6 since 1990!

At least with Baltimore and Tampa Bay we're even over our entire history (6-6 with Baltimore and 5-5 with Tampa). They've just killed us recently.

Starting in 2002, when the league expanded to 32 teams with the Texans, there was established a system where every team would know 14/16 opponents, including the location of the game, well into the future. Its all based on a big rotation. As others have said, the other team opponents are the two AFC teams who finish in the same place the year prior, who aren't part of the division that we're up against that year.

    http://www.fbschedules.com/nfl/miami-dolphins.php

This website lists who and where we'll be playing through 2019, which is the last year that the current plan has been agreed upon by the owners.

Its been coincidence that we've played Baltimore quite a bit lately. This will also be the fifth year in a row that we've played the Chargers, and eighth time in the last ten. We're facing Tennesse for the third year in a row this season also.

By contrast, this season will only be the 4th time in the last 12 years that we've faced Denver, which is the minimum, the 4th time in the past 11 for Kansas City, and counting only the regular season, we've played Pittsburgh 4 times in the past nine years.

It's technically only 2 scheduled games vs other equal placed teams as we play an entire AFC div.

Schedule's are, 6 div games, 4 games vs rotating AFC div, and 4 games vs rotating NFC div and 2 games vs equal place finishers.

So in actuality we do play all equal placed teams as we play an entire div, but only 2 scheduled games vs = placed teams.

Hmm.. no I think it's the other way around Finster LOL haha.

That is, "technically" speaking we actually do schedule games against all other equally placed teams in our conference (just look at the schedule for proof haha!). Doesn't matter if conceptually speaking the best way to understand NFL scheduling is how you (and the NFL) describe it. But "technically" speaking the way I described it is correct.

haha! what a debate lol (slow evening...)

Yet we beat the Ravens at probably the lowest football point of this franchise's history, near the end of 2007. Without the Ravens, there's a good chance we would have to endure one of the only 0-16 seasons being brought up every time the perfect season is brought up. Thanks Ravens!

Either way, what we have today is a much better system than it used to be. Its as completely fair and even as it could be, given the 32 teams, eight divisions and 16 regular season games.

When there were just 28 teams, the scheduling process ranged from mostly logical but with some fuzzy logic, to a complete mess that was molded by someone in the league office with an agenda. Part of the problem was that four of the six divisions had five teams, and the other two only had four, leading to a built in unfairness.

The Dolphins played eight games - half their schedule - vs teams in their own division, four games vs one of the NFC Divisions (Missing one team from the East and Central each time they came up in the rotation), and then the remaining schedule was made up of some combination of teams from the AFC Central and West, with the only steadfast rule seeming to be that we had to play at least one team from each. It led to long stretches where we simply NEVER played some clubs, most famously with Marino and Elway only squaring off once in their long careers despite being drafted in the same season, because Miami and Denver didn't play a single time between 1985 and 1998.

Meanwhile, we played the Chiefs 10 times in the regular season (plus twice in the playoffs) during that same time, including for some reason that I've never been able to find, twice in one month in 1989. We also played the Raiders 9 times, the Chargers 6 times, and the Seahawks (then of the AFC West) 4 times, instead of any more than the once vs Denver.

I think this explains the bolded part:
    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...fl-schedule-common-opponents-easiest-schedule
5th place finisher plays at least 10 common opponents. OK, in 1989 with 28 teams you had two divisions in each conference with 5 teams. The most reasonable way for both 5th place finishers in a conference to play 10 common opponents (within the conference) is if they play every other team from each of those two divisions with 5 teams once AND each other twice.

Dallas and GB also played each other twice that year. Both were 5th place finishers in 1988.

Isn't this exactly what I just said, lol.

I am just trying to clarify that only 2 games are scheduled BECAUSE they are equal placed teams, we do play the other 3rd place team, but that is happenstance, as they are part of the div that we play that year.

14 games per year are set in stone, I can tell you 14 opponents for us each year indefinitely, because of the rotating schedule, N,W,S, this year is west, so next year in the AFC it will be the south, then back to the north etc, same for the NFC div we play, south this year, north the next etc.

There are only 2 games that are undetermined for 2018, those will be the 2 div teams that had the same record as us that weren't in the div we played.

I'm just trying to put out here clearly, how the NFL schedule works for those that don't know how it's determined.
