They just practiced against those same guys for days in a row. We knew what we had here. I'm not concerned as much with effort in these situations, as I am with execution. We looked ok. Philly's defense ain't no joke, and our 1st teamers looked decent against them. We were up 21-14 before both teams starting taking starters out.

Because if effort is equal, then offensive skill positions and the defensive line will shine. Basically any position on the attack will win. Offensive skill positions attack, but so does the dline.

That is because the positions that defend (not just defensive side of the ball) have to react which puts them at a disadvantage....especially if the play calling is vanilla and they aren't scheming. During pass plays, the defensive line is actually attacking and the oline is reacting.

    Fair enough.

I'm just keeping my expectations low for the regular season now. Hopefully they look different when the season actually starts.

Yes, but why did we take starters out? The plan was for both teams to play starters for 3 quarters...

However, Philly's QB took several big hits and the Eagles said, "Nope, second team on the field!" Miami kept our D starters in one more series and then pulled all of our starters as well. That was sort of a respect thing but Cutler could have put up 50 in that first half. The deep passes were open all night and that pigskin was flying. When we did hand off to Ajayi with the 1st string linemen, there were plenty of big, gaping holes to run through.

    We got this!

    Bingo.

It really only matters to fringe or roster bubble players. The speed of the regular season is monumentally different and has been mentioned countless times by players.

These guys have been in this type of weather for a while now. No matter how long you've lived in a hot and humid environment, it still takes a toll. They had some pretty intense practices up there prior to the game.

I would argue that it is more of a physical demand to have continued activities in that weather than in more temperate regions. And it catches up at some point.

Adjusting is one thing; but it doesn't take away from the overall increased physical demands compared to other regions. I'm merely saying that Miami may have not been as fresh, and they looked it in some regard.

In this system, I have to disagree.

I think Tannehill has some of the nuances in this offense down. I just don't see Cutler being that way. He's always been a gunslinger. He can be pretty darned inaccurate at times. We'll have to see, but I just don't see some of these underneath plays being in Cutler's wheelhouse. Cutler is a gifted thrower, but I'm just not sold yet on him working in all of the pieces of this offense entirely.

    We'll see, though.

Guys like wake and Suh are not gonna show/ blow their wad in meaningless games..not even close..they sustain...

If coaches have half of brain their not gonna gameplan one iota.

    Precisely.

Then you add in the fact that they're trying not to get hurt and you can see how it's hard to gauge starters in the preseason.

I think our offense is going to be much better than last year even in spite of our offensive lines. Predicting they average 24 ppg.

You keep saying that but Cutler and Tannehill's "In game" performances are almost virtually identical when you compare them...

    https://www.pro-football-reference....ct=Jay+Cutler&player_id2=CutlJa00&idx=players

Tannehill takes an extra sack, but Jay throws an extra INT.

If that were really the case, they wouldn't be so similar.

Also, last season Tannehill put up a 67% completion rate at 7.7 yards per attempt, and a 93.5 passer rating under Gase. In Cutler’s 2015 season with Gase, he had a 64% completion rate, a 7.6 yards per attempt average, and a 92.3 passer rating.

It's moot. They are almost the same guy except one's a "gunslinger with an attitude". The other isn't and we've watched Tannehill struggle under Philbin's failed tenure. Jay has done nothing of note in his career either though.

That said, I hope Cutler has a career year here and helps us hit the playoffs.

Tannehill was much improved last year. But, he'll never be great, neither will Cutler or any other QB on our roster right now.

I think Jay Cutler is better for our offense than Ryan Tannehill. I don't want either one of them in our future plans.

I want a new gunslinging cerebral QB that we either draft or trade for next offseason. If he has to groom for a year or two, I'll defer to Adam Gase between Tanny/Cutler.

Not every drive ends in a touchdown and as far as to whether or not they were awesome? I say this...

    Jay Ajayi....9 carries...53 yards...5.9 yards per carry.

Most of you are so hung up on the passing game as to whether or not the OL is doing great. All of you need to look at the total picture.

C'mon DJ. It's preseason. Wake me up when the games matter. It ain't about hustle now, unless you're a fringe player. Just no more freakin' major injuries this preseason and I don't care what happens the rest of the way until Opening Day. Then it's ON Like Donkey Kong!

They said that about Drew Brees while in San Diego, then he met Sean Payton.

I don't see Tannehill going anywhere. I think Gase sees something in him, much the way Payton saw something in Brees. Other than the ACL, Tannehill has been very durable. There's no reason to believe he cannot sustain a solid career well into his 30's in this system.

Absolutely, I'm not a fan of starters playing in preseason..the risk outweighs everything...and the coaches shouldn't be putting anything on tape that another team could scout..

While I understand the sentiment, I have to disagree.

That's as close to real as you're gonna get, and I would say that these guys need that in-game experience to really get their bodies and minds into game-situation shape. I think it's a vital part of training.

Injuries are going to happen, and every year, many even happen in TC. I look at it as an extension of TC.

If we are going to worry about injuries, one could argue against having minicamps, TC, etc.; let the guys just come straight in and start playing 'meaningful' games.

These preseason games may not amount to a hill of beans in the W-L column, but they are a vital part of preparing for a long and arduous season.

I also think it gives the coaches the advantage of scouting guys against meaningful competition. This helps with depth, etc.

It gives the second stringers a chance to show what they have in a game. Some guys practice well and do not show up to games. Some vice versa. If not for some of these preseason games, the coaches would be at a disadvantage when the real lights come on.

I understand the injury thing, but they happen; whether at home changing a light bulb to a missed step in TC. Players simply get injured.

How do you know that? I think he was part of the problem that Timmons was talking about. He played like hell Thur nite. So did Xavien. Besides Timmons, there wasn't a bright spot for the defense. Not Jones, not Suh, not Wake....none of them.

I wouldn't necessarily call a preseason game stupid and meaningless. These are the initial games that you want to assess whether or not players are executing...or whether certain plays work, etc.

Now as far as the assumed starters playing at a "win or die" level the entire time they're in there...they probably don't and I'm not TOO wrapped around the axle over that but this is when teams have to tune everything up before the season starts.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on whether or not they are meaningless...even for veterans. My wife, and I see her point...preseason games, although "meaningless" do indeed set the tone for the regular season.

With injuries they may set the tone.

I dunno, I said it before, I cannot remember a single time when the execution of play during preseason was indicative of the regular season.

I cannot for the life me think it would be ok if Such or Jones or Wake got hurt going all out during preseason.

Jones looked rusty, mentally and physically. I think these in-game situations are good even for vets like Jones because really, he hasn't had much experience in this system against competition. I'm glad he got burned. He'll learn from that.

No practice simulates a game like a preseason game.

Injuries do suck. But I think these practice games are necessary for the entire team, staff included. I would only argue that four is too many.

Tannehill was also nailing bombs last year at this time and throughout the season too. 40 50 60 yards... I *would say I can't believe how some are so ready to throw RT under the bus, but with the way he's been bad-mouthed and snickered at I guess I'm not to surprised. Some people are saying Cutler is far and above RT based on ~10 preseason plays. Glad we have Cutler this year, but I'm not crowning him above RT now, or probly ever. And based on past performance it's tough to imagine Cutler being "all that". We'll see.

I'm not saying playing in them is bad, i'm saying going all out like it was an actual game is bad.

Yes, it is good to shake off some rust, it is NOT good to play like the outcome matters.

Your basing your question on Reshads performance on Thursday..?

He did not play well, but we know what we have in the pro bowl player..he didn't forget how to play..maybe he didn't have the proper energy the other nite, maybe he did want to coast a bit and figure some things out during the game..I see no reason to question Reshad jones.

I don't know. I mean, there are different trains of thought regarding practice.

I'm more in the practice like you play category.

No one likes injuries, but I personally think these games do matter from an individual performance standpoint to see where you stand.

My only issue with Jones is that he has very limited time in this system. Mental reps are good, but nothing can replicate in-game adjustments, physicality, etc.

On the missed hit/tackle, I kind of wish he would have tested himself a little. Sort of gotten it out of the way. It was essentially an open-field tackle and he whiffed. Does he think about that in the future going up against a large TE?

I don't doubt Jones' ability, but he did really seem off a bit.

In terms of the degree to which they contribute to their team's chances of winning, Tannehill and Cutler aren't meaningfully different from each other. And both QBs have played long enough to make that determination with certainty.

The offense this year will be more explosive and unpredictable with Cutler, but Cutler's characteristic and costly mistakes (namely interceptions) won't make his overall play help the team win any more (or less) than Tannehill's play did.
