Sorry no link, but from official sources Urbik has been cut. Knew he was having knee scope midweek but didn't expect a cut. Obviously knee was worse than originally thought, but this is another blow to depth at guard. I appreciate HO holds the position in low regard, but we are threadbare on line in general, let alone at G.. Something has to give now surely tbaum??!!
They believe they've stumbled into something with Jesse Dsvis. Starting G, backup C is what Urbik was and its what Davis is.
Davis is a backup C? How do you figure, when he has not played there this preseason? Brendel started the first two games, and was the first to enter the Philly game when Pouncey was done for the day. Steen played there some later on, after starting at G. One of them is most likely to play C if/when Pouncey cannot.
Right now, it looks like the starting line will be Tunsil, Davis, Pouncey, Bushrod, James, with the subs being S. Young and E. Smith at OT, with Brendel and Steen at G/C. If Steen starts at LG, then Davis would be a sub at G/T, based on where he played in preseason. Usually carry 9 OL on the 53 man roster, and that 9 seems most likely at this point.
Sometimes they'll keep a guy like this on speed dial for mid to late in the season if his knee improves and we have anyone go down.
There is no depth at the moment, so I hope they are working on a trade. DO NOT wait for the final roster cuts to grab another guard, get one ASAP and hope they can gel enough to avoid getting Cutler killed the first month or so of the season (and hopefully they all learn to work as a group after that). For the record, I'd prefer to trade no more than a mid-round pick next year for that guard, but I'd offer up Caroo and a late pick happily for a solid vet guard. I think Grant will see more time at WR this year anyway.
Mr C, I see you have left Asiata off that list. Do you see him getting cut or possibly on the PS? Was hoping for bigger things from him and would hate to give up on him.
I have no idea. Then again, not my job, right? The Front Office/coaching staff should have a list and be making phone calls. With Urbik gone, the idea of getting by with the guys we have left is untenable.
IMO, we either carry 10, which is less common than 9, or we waive him and try to sign him to the PS. To keep him as part of a 9 man OL contingent would not be rewarding the best performers from Training Camp, it would be going by draft status. Sometimes a draft pick gets a mulligan for one season though, strictly due to where he was drafted.
i agree with this. if Asiata isnt worthy, he goes on the PS. We can always poach another PS if he gets picked up (which i highly doubt).
