Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that the team is shopping offensive lineman Cameron Erving. Erving was a first-round pick in 2015 and has moved between positions during his time in Cleveland. He started at center for most of last season, has seen time at guard and was in the mix for the right tackle job this summer. It looks like the Browns have settled on Shon Coleman for that spot, however, and it appears the Browns are done shifting Erving around in hopes of finding a lasting home on their line. Erving is set to make just under $1.3 million this year and is signed for just over $1.7 million next year on a rookie deal that also includes a team option for the 2019 season. Me- he's played Center and all the other positions. He might be a good plan B for Pouncy or one of the other guys. Pretty friendly cap number too.
PFF on Erving: (https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-ranking-all-32-nfl-offensive-lines-this-season) "16. CLEVELAND BROWNS (21) Top overall grade: LT Joe Thomas, 89.1 (No. 4) Top pass-blocking grade: LT Joe Thomas, 89.9 (No. 5) Top run-blocking grade: LT Joe Thomas (No. 18), RG John Greco, 80.8 (No. 19) No offensive line had to deal with as much in terms of the QBs they were blocking for than the Browns, who had rolled through six different passers in seven weeks to begin the season—none of whom demonstrated the kind of playing style that actually makes things easier on his linemen. Despite that, Joe Thomas had another excellent season at LT, and the guard pairing of Joel Bitonio and John Greco also played well. The issue on this line was Cameron Erving, the former first-round pick, playing center in his second season, having struggled massively at guard and tackle as a rookie. He was little, if any, better in the middle, surrendering 30 total QB pressures and being routinely abused as a run blocker. It’s difficult to see much of a future for Erving at this point, and his position is one in need of upgrade."
I didn't have good evals on both Irving nor Cyrus kouandjio coming out, they both went in the first two rounds, one a first...not interested
As a noles fan. Erving perplexed me and so did his usage. When he was a Nole he was literally an average college offensive lineman when we played him at guard. His last year with us he spent the entire year at center and was absolutely fantastic. Browns drafted him and played him immediately at guard because they had Mack....I would take a flyer on him as a back up center and see how he does.
Did you not read Galant's post above...He gave up 30 QB pressures and being routinely abused as a run blocker?
The problem with trying to turn around players with good potential from bad teams is that you have to spend a lot of time deprogramming their bad habits/bad coaching before you can start doing positive things with them. Generally its better to go with a less talented player from a good system who has good habits, or a rookie who you just have to program, not deprogram and reprogram. The excpetion for me is if you have a player who has been put into the wrong scheme for his talents.
