I was forced to watch the game through ESPN's play-by-play online coverage, and the Dolphins still managed to give me a heart attack. The words "wide right, no good" have never looked so poetic.
Gritty win. Good **** for the first game. Offense found rhythm during 2nd half on the back of Ajayi, and at times, Parker. Holding Chargers to 17? You take that all day with 2 backup LBs. Pass rush the only concern for this game. The rest will come with games played!
Ajayi is a work horse and a talent. Wow we got a gem there. It's like having a young Ricky Williams without the pot. I think a lot of people thought he was a one year wonder, he proved the doubters wrong today.
You know what guys.... Given what this team has been through the past two weeks... that's a heck of an accomplisment. Was it ugly? You bet. Were there player mistakes? Yup. Coaching mistakes? Yup. But you know what, they hung in there, they fought, they stuck together, and did exactly what they did down the stretch all year last year, and that's fight till the end, and come away with the W. If you're complaining today, you've likely got some legit reasons, but at the end of the day, take a step back and consider what's gone on the last few weeks, this being our first game, Jays first game with us. a game with virtually nobody playing LB... that's a solid W in my opinion.
Ugly win and I expected nothing less. Chargers are a lot better than their record shows right now, but Miami has their own issues to deal with. Our secondary, and especially the LB corp is a hot mess.
The timeout was a GOOD timeout. Chargers were on 3rd down with no timeouts. 10 seconds was not enough to run a play and clock it. Furthermore, if they ran a play and failed to convert on 3rd down, they couldn't clock it on 4th down! Gase preserved time for a kickoff return in case the FG was made.
In hindsight it was a bad timeout, but I'm not sure how much you could blame Gase or anyone else on the sideline for not realizing the confusion going on with the Chargers. They were assuming competence on the part of the Chargers with the timeout I guess. But who cares? They won their first game on the road against a good team. I'll take it!
No that was a bad timeout. The Chargers were running their FG unit onto the field for a rushed FG. They made a big mistake doing that, and we countered with our own. We're not going to be facing a lot of Younghoe's this year.
They would have kicked it with time expiring. No chance for a kickoff return. It was risky, rushed FG vs. no chance for kickoff return. He missed it anyways. Maybe I'm misremembering?
With all the stuff this team has gone through, I thought they did pretty well going on the road and getting a win. I mean most of the starters really haven't played since Week 3 of the Preseason, some rust and mistakes were bound to be made.
In the heat of the moment and the confusion, I think the TO was okay. You want to give yourself the best chance for a block. You definitely do not want 12-men if they attempt and miss. There's no real right call in that situation. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.
Okay, now for some serious thought... One of the things I stated time and time again during the preseason was the success or failure of this team was going to rest on Matt Burke and the defense. Gentlemen, I'm VERY concerned about our defense this year. Not that the Chargers are a sluch team; not that they are an elite team but their offense marched that ball up and down the field on us at will. I may be wrong, but I don't believe we were able to get a single 3 and out. I understand the Dolphins have been though a lot the last couple of weeks with Irma but Jesus, God, Mary and Joseph, if we don't start dominating defensively right quick and in a hurry, this is going ot be a very stressful season.
I suppose that's true enough. I'm just happy for the win. Although I need a Xanax now after the typical Dolphins nail biter But Yay 1-0.
Yeah, the D definitely looked out of touch in the secondary. Surprisingly, with the exception of a few runs, they did well against the run. Only allowed 44 yds, I think. Here's the thing, guys get open in the NFL, and that's fine. But some of those guys were WIDE open. Rivers didn't have to fit too many into tight windows, if at all. Let's see if Burke can get better. They really didn't sync well today. No real pass rush, and he blitzes were for naught. No spirit. It's something I'll be watching for sure.
They wouldn't have gotten the FG off, half the time lined up to spike the ball and the other half ran off the field for the kicking team, they couldn't have rectified that in 10 seconds. There would have been an illegal procedure penalty and a 10 second runoff if they snapped it, which I doubt they could have in time. The game was over because of Chargers incompetence and then Gase called arguably the worst timeout in the history of the NFL. Chris Webber at Michigan would have been proud of it.
That's a really nice win to get in the first game of the year with the Jets next week. Did not deserve to win that game at all, but they got it done. The linebackers and secondary are again gonna be an issue. Allen wont be the starter when mcdonald comes back but he stinks. The linebackers are just too slow yet again, but lets see if Timmons not going awol before the game does. OL looked really good but that pass rush was nonexistent. It's one game so lets see how we continue to perform.
The chargers went three and out on their first drive of the game. I think that was it. Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
In a way i feel we have a better chance against the Buccs in week 11. Had we played last week, pretty sure we would have lost. The buccs came out dominant and this gives us time to get better before we go up against them. Now wr have the jets and if we truly are going back to the playoffs this year we must take care of business and beat them senseless. Like Pat Riley says, being a professional is winning the games youre suppose to win.
Is their any doubt that Cutler moves the pocket as well as anyone named Marino? A few of those plays were sacks and blaming the OL the past 5 years. 1-0 EAD
The defense has some areas to clean up for sure, but in the end they only gave up 17 points to a pretty good offensive team. Nice road win to start out the season.
I was pretty impressed by some of those. I can see where maybe some of those broken plays could lead to some good chunk yards. To be fair to Tannehill, some of those lines were really bad for the young QB.
We are lucky to win that game. We had an extra week to prepare. we had film on them from week 1 and they didn't. We played like it was a scrimmage. There was no intensity on either side of the ball, aside from Ajayi. The defense only made like 2 plays the whole game. The offense made a lot of decent plays, but made just as many mistakes. I knew this game would be close. Last season we were tied with the Chargers driving until Kiko got the pick 6. Due to injuries and the Timmons debacle we dont look any better on D today than we did last season. There were definatly bright spots on offense and special teams but for the most part we looked lethargic. 3rd and goal and Tunsil doesnt think Ingram is gonna come strong? How do you not stick Gates knowing he is looking at setting a TD record? Thats a player awarness problem. Part coaching, part personal responsibility. I didnt like Rivers having a bright white clean jersey in the 4th quarter but I did like the run stop today. Looking at todays game and at what other teams are doing right now I am worried about our schedule. On the bright side.. a win is a win!! Whoohoo! We have won the last 10 of 12 games, had a record breaking FG today (54 yards) and once the O gets rolling could be a real powerhouse. Hurricane, hardships, bye week or not. At the end of the season no one will care. Either you make it or you dont. Lets hope we get things together next week and not play down to them.
I actually agree. OMG. I think coming come and having a normal week (despite travel to NYJ and having to pack for London), will give everyone some normalcy.
You could say that holding Phillip Rivers under 20 points at home is actually really good. The big failing was making failing to score several times in the red zone. Everyone is splooging over those DVP catches, but they failed to convert those drives into TDs. It's like the ghost of Dave Wannstedt took over for Gase. They need to work on the red zone offence.
We had 200 yards in the air and 100 on the ground with no turnovers. That's a good game against a good team with a better offense and defense than we have that hasn't dealt with nearly the adversity. For those knocking Burke, we held the Chargers to 44 yards rushing with 26 of that coming on one carry and we did it with 2 undrafted LBs. Also have to remember that we had prepped to play the Bucs until a week ago, then had to bounce out west, deal with more adversity at the last minute with Timmons, and still won the game even with Gase not calling his best game. Cutler played well for a guy known for making "fk it and chuck it" decisions, and who was lured out of retirement a few weeks ago. Gase knows he has to protect Cutler from his greatest enemy - himself. And he did. If you go back and look at what Gase did with Cutler in Chicago back in 2015, it was tons of screen passes, quick low risk plays, and picking the deeper shots at select times. This IS Gase's offense. Last season, we were 2nd in the NFL at screen plays. Other than Tunsil's gaff where he lost concentration and let Ingram beat him around the corner, the OL played a very good game. Gase also did what he said he was with Pouncey and Steen and rotated them. The OL held both of SD's vaulted DEs in check and they showed good power and ability with opening holes for Ajayi. The run defense was stellar and far better than at any time last season. I was very surprised. Our Free agent DE, Hayes, made a huge difference in the run defense. Can't wait to beat the stinking stej next week.
Even though the screen passes can be frustratingly unproductive sometimes, they need to be called to keep a defense honest. They don't always have ****ty results like the ones we saw yesterday.
