I am struggling to put my finger on the core problem. To me it is very encompassing. Between the play calling/slow starts, inconsistent run game, inconsistent OL, the inability to generate any offense if the run game doesn't work, why we can't make plays vertically, the inability of the TE to get unleashed, not playing certain players, and personnel.

Miami better get their sh** together fast, their next two opponents, both scored over 30 this week, yet both defenses were porous.

While the offensive game plan could be argued left and right, the fact that Ajayi was consistently being hit in the backfield...and that Cutler had no real pocket to step up into, the problem with yesterday's offense is what it's been for a number of years...consistent offensive line play.

I was at the game yesterday and was watching the jets cheat up at the line stacking the box the whole first half.We had 1-1 coverage numerous times only to watch the fins run ajay into a brick wall play after play.

I think the WR's didn't show any fight at all yesterday. Nobody came to the ball.

Bad OL play, combined with a QB still shaking off the rust and trying to get on the same page with his WR's because he hasn't played since just after midway point last year, and up until about 2 months ago he was planning on retiring and going into broadcasting, combined with some questionable playcalls, but mostly the first two IMO.

Preparation, OL play, play calling, bad QB play, lackadaisical effort by WRs...

Our offense has almost always fell apart when JA gets bottled up. None of our Wr's really get much separation, so we have to scheme better to get them open. Ofcourse doing that takes time and we didn't give any to Cutler yesterday.

    All around BAD.

Last year, the offense turned a corner when we got rid of Thomas & Turner.....but also when Gase admitted he started really listening to Thill and getting him involved in the game planning.

Everyone took it as a negative against Thill and a positive for Cutler that Cutler never says no to plays....maybe the negative/positive assessment needs to flipped?

Play calling coaches can often outsmart themselves, maybe Thill was a check against that with Gase...

Really it boils down to bad oline play. It all starts up front, we had dlineman consistently in the backfield before ajayi was even able to get the hand off, and the pocket was consistently collapsing around cutler before he could even get through his first progression forcing him to rush throws.

We have neglected the oline especially at the guard positions where we tried to get by on the cheap instead of investing on some real quality starters. This is what happens when you have bad oline play.

Whatever the problem is, I don't think its Gase "outsmarting" himself. He's not "too smart"...I am sure of it.

2 posts hit it home for me - if they were committed to stop the run, then the NFL will do so too. We had to have had favorable matchups with our wideouts. so when I say rotten, could those WRs be rotten, and we were just marketed and advertised falsely?

We should be using the pass to set up the run. Instead we are using the run to kill the pass.

Plus the offense is the same ole same ole. Watch the Titans or the Rams their offenses seem to have more moving parts, are playing faster, keeps a defense on their toes and attack. We do all receivers run a 5 yard route, run a bubble screen. High school stuff.

Same on defense we are just vanilla so many other defenses attacking out there.

For some reason the entire team looked tired and unmotivated. That's on coaching, IMO. I get that the Jets usually always play the Dolphins hard, but in yesterday's game no one for the Dolphins showed up. No one.

    - O-Line played like complete trash, run blocking and pass blocking.
    - QB played below average, but when he did make throws right on the money or a decent jump ball, our WR's either clearly dropped the ball or never even made a play for it at all.
    - WR (Screw you Jarvis Landry - I'd be looking to trade you after that game), ALL 3 of our STUD WR played awful. Drops, poor separation, zero motivation. Hobbled DeVante Parker played the best out of all 3, so I'll give him a pass even though he didn't even attempt to track down that one long ball by Cutler, that was definitely catchable. Kenny Stills looked like hot garbage.
    - Defense: D-Line looked solid to me. LB's could use some help. DB's need TJ McDonald like, yesterday. Byron Maxwell played his heart out. Won me back real fast.
    - Jay Ajayi looked great. It wasn't his fault. He played his tail off.

Our WRs have "potential" and in reality potential isn't the same as proven talent.

    Agreed with all of this.

I'd like to throw in one observation, though.

I think we've become a little spoiled with Tannehill's very accurate throwing while on the move, which is probably the one part of his game that we can all pretty much agree that he has over Cutler (besides straight-line speed, which he obviously has over Cutler as well).

While Cutler is better at moving around in the pocket and avoding sacks, he is an errant passer while throwing on the move/rushing his throws without setting his feet. Tannehill can do these things with relative ease to both sides of the field.

Not saying Tannehill would've won this game, but I think this might have been a good weapon to have when the pocket is collapsing on every play.

I think we're not used to having a QB throwing such inacurrate passes when being constantly pressured and having to move around like this, and it kind of caught us by surprise, IMO.

The team just wasn't ready to play, and simply couldn't match the intensity and hustle of the Jets. Hopefully this bitter loss stays with the team and they stay focused on every opponent the rest of the year. Showing up simply isn't enough.

I actually do think RT would have kept us in this one and probly won. Cutler may have been a bit handcuffed in this game, OR the line was so bad they simply were limited in what they could call. Anyway, Cutler just doesn't seem to be able to handle the pressure. He has good instincts to avoid a sack and scamper away, but it looks like he can't throw accurately once he leaves the pocket or has to rely on anything other than basic footwork. The other glaring thing is Cutler's absolute refusal to run even if it's a practical guarantee he will get the first down. There was one play he had 18 yards clear in front of him after he brushed around the ridiculous rush on a critical 3rd down and 3 or 4. Easy first down... 4 more steps and fall down is all he had to do. He overthrew it instead. He doesn't seem to have any soft touch on the throws that need it. Kind of Henne-esque in firing the ball in whatever direction he's throwing for short and medium range. The line was obviously bad, and we can't get around that. But we had our chances to put up a big play and possibly silence them and plant that seed of doubt. Just didn't do it.

RT tends to be a warrior in games with this kind of pressure. He's gritted his way through seasons of horrible line play and relentless pass rush. He honed his game under those conditions to the point where he was really coming on before he got injured. Ryan would have made the touch passes. He'd make those throws from outside the pocket. Ryan would have run several times for a first down in this game, and possibly even a TD. I wonder if Ryan would have done better at rallying his teammates?

Well it is what it is. We don't have Ryan. We have Cutler. Hopefully the line can adjust. Hopefully Cutler can adjust. He's only had a couple games in this environment. We're lucky to be 1-1 I think. Hopefully we can dig deep after this embarrassment and show some grit in London.

    I'll quote John McKay:

"We didn't tackle well at all, but we made up for it by not blocking."

And when asked about his teams execution:

    "I'm in favor of it"

How many years has OL been a problem and how many years has we invested top picks in that unit? Its almost like Groundhog Day.

It often does feel like Groundhog Day but I do think it's a different groundhog every now and then.

I still remember when it felt like groundhog day that we couldn't ever find a RB worth a damn, or that our WR corps was crap year after year, or that we couldn't find a coach worth a damn (hopefully that's finally changed!), or that our run defense was crap year after year (hey.. this year it's started off well). And last year it actually seemed like we finally started to win close games and not fall apart in the 4th quarter.

I think over the long run it's not as much Groundhog Day we're playing as it's Whack-A-Mole (somewhat related type of pest!). We fix one problem after many years of trying only to see another appear in the meantime. Maybe one day we'll get lucky and all the stars will align at the same time.

Good points, but the bad OL play is a mole that comes up every freakin year since before marino retired. I think its at least 20 years and counting of bad OL play.

We sign guys like albert and they wash out after a couple of years. Pouncey never healthy, we draft 3 mid round guards and they all turn out to be crap. Even tunsil who we thought was a home run is now playing like crap.

I think its a combination of bad talent evaliation, poor prioritization (we dont value guards) and poor coaching. None of our offensive line coaches as far back as I can remember have been very good. Foerster who we have now has never produced a good performing OL unit in his career and it has been no different for him here in Miami.

have to be able to get positive yardage on first down.

I think you're right for most of those years since Marino retired but not for all.

The OL was actually pretty good in some years. In 2001-2002 we ranked #5 and #7 in total sacks allowed and of course in 2002 we had the best RB in the league, both by total yards and YPG, and we just barely lost out to the Vikings in total rushing yards (we had 2502.. they had 2507).

All I know is our WRs had a BAD case of stone hands. We showed our asses to the universe. Just horrible. I mean might be the worst I've ever seen in a one INT game.
