I have to admit I've been surprised at how the world has seemingly moved away from laptops as a primary device the last few years. One salesgirl at Best Buy seemed genuinely shocked that I wanted a fairly powerful 17" machine, as if no one had ever asked her that before, lol.

I've accepted the fact that I'm going to have to eventually buy one online, but I so, so, so badly want to touch and feel it with my own two hands before I make that kind of commitment. So many of them feel like thinly made crap these days, including model lines that I used to trust when I worked retail selling them.

Yeah, most people are on phones and tablets nowadays. I am a big fan of Gigabyte laptops but they cost a good chunk of change. I don't think you can get one for under a $1000.

I'd rather not drop the money for a 1080 when I can get the 2080 or whatever for the same price in three or four months. I'm ok for now in Star Citizen but getting 20-30 FPS on the regular is definitely not what I'm used to. Also, FPS issues in SC are server based at the moment and people with 1080s are having same FPS at 4K (Im at 1080p res still) and am willing to wait for new tech if its known and on the verge. The future of video cards is a little obscure at the moment with NVidia Volta technology unknowns and was wondering if you have any clarity if any on what we can expect. Admittedly I did some reading, but left with more questions.

There isn't going to be a 2080 in 3-4 months. Nvidia is far enough ahead of AMD, and prices are high enough thanks to miners, that they don't have much incentive to release anything new in Q1 2018. They might announce in Q1 2018, but they wouldn't launch until Q2 at the earliest. Additionally, a 2080 would be a leap ahead from a 1080, but not necessarily that far ahead of a 1080 Ti, which is already able to handle 120Hz at 4K with reasonable settings.

You have a need now, and there is technology now that can handle that need. There's always something better coming. Think of it like cars: if you need a car now, do you wait 6 months for the 2018 model? No, you get the car now, and it does what you need it to do.

We don't know much about Volta other than Nvidia is focusing on making a GPU scalable from high end desktop gaming to servers to embedded products for things like car interfaces and AI calculation. It should be faster, but the 1080 Ti will likely be competitive with it. When Nvidia launched the 1080, for instance, they compared the 1080 to the 980, not the 980 Ti, which was in the neighborhood of 1080 performance.

Well, I bit the bullet and gave up on getting a 17" machine in order to get everything that I wanted at a price I could stomach.

I got a HP 15.6" HP ENVY. i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, touchscreen with a backlit keyboard. That should be satisfactory for running the games that I do, lol. Once I get my new house built and have broadband, things should be great. For now, I'll have to go to an internet cafe to download a few things, including Civ.

I have and the i-6700, the Geforce GTX 1060 and 16 GB of RAM- mine is a beast too. That's funny because I've always built my systems as well, but I caught this one on a closeout sale at Walmart online about a year ago for $897. It would have cost me $1400 to build this system and I would have bought a cheaper case, no LED's, etc. Retailers are getting stupid with their competitive stuff these days and WalMart is notorious to practically give electronics away.

Anyway, I used to be heavily into MMORPG's as well- Dark Age of Camelot was my game for a long time. I haven't played anything decent in awhile and I'm looking for something too. I recently started playing Guild Wars II and I like it, but the PvP is a joke. I want a game where I can gank folks from behind and then get those hilarious hate PM's....man I loved those old school games.

Is anybody playing anything decent online like that? I'd love to start playing a few hours a week again.

I recently purchased a PS4 Pro and I'm playing on that a lot. Currently I'm playing Horizon Zero Dawn and Madden 18. With the kids it's easier for me to play Madden right now because I can play a quick game and then be done...

Soooooooooo, with this new Intel Kernel vulnerability essentially making any Intel PC in the last ten years easily accessible to hackers, and the fact that Mircosoft is patching Win10 to at least temporarily provide some security - until the hackers get a piece of those security measures and compromise them - I'll have to upgrade from Win7. I don't have a choice. No patch for Win7 incoming.

Benefit is I get to move on from DirectX11 and apparently Win10 offers better gaming performance.

The pain in the butt is going to be re-installing all my software and downloading all games again. Although I have a dedicated SSD for OS, and use normal SATA for gaming, I am going to re-download and install Steam, Origin, and anything else to ensure I don't lose performance because of registry redundancies, miscues, and all that shhh associated with all the software I have installed on my slave drive.

    Should be fun.

Tone_E, can you go over that again for us mega dummies? I just bought a new Windows 10 laptop a month ago, and have stopped using my older Win 7 one. I use Kapersky Internet Security. Am I as safe as I reasonably could be?

I'm definitely no expert, so I'll leave it in the hands of professionals and lead you to this video. Essentially, any Intel PROCESSOR from the last 10 years has a backdoor that can allow a hacker can gain access to your ENTIRE system, pictures, files, passwords, etc. It isn't software related. Kaspersky, Bit Defender, or any other anti virus only protects against software viruses. Intel has a hardware related backdoor. Apple and Microsoft are patching their operating systems to protect against this vulnerability, but it has nothing to do with what you do or install on your computer as this backdoor is and has always been present with or without other computer viruses.

EDIT: Benchmarks are showing that the the reduced performance of 5%-30% is a little exaggerated and most if not all people won't be able to tell the difference.

EDIT2: Update your Win10 system and you'll be fine. Best thing to combat hackers is to keep all your software up to date, including Java, Adobe Flash, and all those pain in the butt programs that need updating every two weeks. But, they update for a reason.

That's wild. Well, at least with my new PC, I haven't loaded anything at all onto it aside from one game and some word and excel files. I haven't even logged onto my bank's website with it (just my phone) or bought anything on Amazon yet.

Steam is incredibly frustrating. I attempted to buy an add on for Civ 6, and it broke. I couldn't figure out how to install it after it had downloaded, it ended up logging me out, I couldn't log back in until I got help from them, and after I did, the game won't open any more.

Just to clarify this. It's not a backdoor. It's a way to fool the CPU into giving an attacker implied information about where in memory some target data is stored.

Just replaced my 970 with a 1080 and doubled my scores on 3dmark. Fairly shocked it's such a big score difference (I mean I am glad to see such improvement).
