I'm no o-line expert, but a guard has different responsibilities and as such would have to develop new technique. A big part of playing oline is repetition. (Some say the lack of practice because of the new CBA is why oline sucks fro the most part all over the NFL) One could argue that Tunsil, as a rookie, had to learn a new position, technique, and mindset. If he's at tackle and reverts back to guard thinking too often he won't be as good.

I know I only played in highschool, but they are not that different.

IMO, playing a year at guard is better than being on the bench. He still got to play against NFL speed. Plus, he has been pretty good at run blocking this season and I think that has a lot to do with playing at guard last year.

I 100% disagree that putting him at guard will hurt him long term. Might make this year a little bumpy, however, most of Tunsil's problems this season is communication. He isn't being beat one-on-one, it is stunts that are killing him.

Edit: IMO, the biggest issue on the line is losing the veteran presence of Brandon Albert.

That's true to a certain extent...guard is actually harder to play because your assignment/technique will change based on what the defense shows you. For instance, if the DE/DT stunt and swap gaps, the tackle is blocking whoever comes around the edge....no problem. The guard is the one adjusting to lock down that gap. So your average guard has more finesse and agility while tackles bring power and balance. It's a completely different mindset.

With that said, Tunsil is very well rounded and he should be able to play either position at a pretty high level. What people are discounting are the talent levels of DE's league-wide...they're essentially tall running backs that are faster, smarter and more agile than your average OT....plus they can grab jersey to force you off-balance where the offense can't. The defender always has a massive advantage in the NFL and it's hard as hell to shut someone like Wake down consistently. And whether you want to admit it or not, every team has a Wake-like guy crashing around the end on every single play.

Some would say, "Tunsil sucked today....he gave up two sacks!" As a former lineman, I'm thinking, "Tunsil was awesome....he shut down <insert name> on 24 of 26 pass plays."

The vast majority of our issues this season has been the interior gaps, which points to our guards being the main issue. James was playing fantastic before he got hurt and I feel like Tunsil has had a very good season as a first year LT. That's not to say he doesn't have room for improvement....but come on. You try blocking someone like Wake 1 play out of 50....you'll probably fail. The real "problem" here is that people have unrealistic expectations on pass blocking.

For anyone that doesn't understand how/what the offensive line does, I recommend you grab one of the NFL Shorts of any team....you'll see every play in about 30 minutes. But instead of watching the game, just pick a DE for each team and watch them the entire time. Count how many times they knock the crap out of the QB/RB/whoever and ask yourself, "Did the tackle mess up....or did that DE just flat out own him because he's a better athlete?"

More often than not, the DE was virtually unblockable with perfect technique and more speed/power/agility.

So if its so hard to play offensive line how come our defence has like 18 sacks the entire season?

The average on the season is 27 sacks...we're 9 behind that pace, or about .8 sacks per game.

Now, go back to the NE game and erase any .8 plays....pretend we got a sack there instead of whatever actually happened. How much does the game change due to erasing that one play? Not much. But folks are saying that we are bad because we're .8 off pace for the league average? I just don't see it.

One thing to remember is that when a team no longer holds the fanbase's interest due to falling out of contention, writers still need to find creative ways to drum up interest. Be prepared to hear a lot of theoretical ideas to improve the team that are a little out there as well as some "insiders" stuff about some pretty unlikely scenarios in the coming months.

wasn't tunsil like a top 10 G that season? He blows *** as LT. maybe his natural position is G and we wasted a mid 1st.

Wait a second here. Cutler has ZERO to do with Albert not being here. Albert was traded long before we had to sign Jay Cutler. Thomas was traded here for Albert in March. Cutler was signed in August. Are you even sure what you're talking about? Sure, Albert was later released, but why would the team bring back a player it just willingly traded? Come on man..

He wasn't actually. However, if we were willing to trade him... that's a pretty clear indication the team was done with him, isn't it?

Either way, it's irrelevant... because you're wrong. Albert was traded in March. Albert then "Retired" July 31, and Un-retired August 8 and was back on the Jags Roster. Jay Cutler was signed by Miami on August 7th. Albert was then released by the Jags on August 11th.

So... your whole point here doesn't make any sense. At all. Miami decided to move on, traded the guy. Tannehill went down. They signed Cutler when Albert was "retired". Then Albert unretired, and I'm pretty sure he's still not on an NFL roster. So... the entire league isn't interested, but apparently we should have re-signed him, but we signed Cutler instead, even though at the time we signed cutler, Albert was still property of another team.

Don't let some facts get in the way of your team bashing ways though. Carry on

No, you haven't made any point actually. Don't try and play the victim here and tell me I'm being rude. You're blaming the Cutler signing as the reason we didn't re-sign a player we traded away months earlier, the same player that no other team in the league wanted since he was cut BEFORE the season. Great, a news outlet pointed out that Albert wanted to come back... So what? The team didn't want him. They TRADED him.

So again... scratch this off the list of things you want to blame the team for. The player in question isn't even in the league right now. Who cares? Nobody in the NFL think's he's worth a roster spot, but you want to blame us, for signing Cutler as the reason we didn't bring him back, even though we couldnt have brought him back when we signed Cutler, but you know, the fact of the matter here is the team didn't want him regardless. They traded him away!

Sorry I called you out with the facts, and that makes me rude apparently? Come on man, be better than that. Lets talk about the facts here.

In regards to Eli coming here, I don't think it's necessarily a good idea on his part to do so. Ironically, Eli would fair much better in Denver, or Jacksonville as opposed to here.
He'd be great in Denver in my opinion, Jacksonville is ideal because they have certain pieces in place (o line, running game, defense). I'm a huge Eli fan and I think him coming here would be a horrible move on his part.

I don't see the point in bringing Eli here. He is a shot QB and not much better than Cutler at this point while being older then Cutler.

Makes absolutely no sense at all.

Because Albert, the former Pro Bowl left tackle, truly is retired.

A league source tells the Miami Herald that Albert has no desire to play anymore.

That explains his behavior in Jacksonville, who traded for Albert in the spring, only to see him announce his retirement at the start of training camp.

Why would we pay money to downgrade? For a quarterback who's on the brink of retirement, to boot?

I'm pretty sure you can't trade a guy, watch the guy retire, and then re-sign the guy without compensating the other team. If that was the case, teams would be trading their star players all the time for high draft picks, only to sign them back a few weeks later and say "neener neener".

That means no matter what, we couldn't sign Albert in that situation.
