My ideal 3 round mock at this point would be the following: 1st round: Quenton Nelson G Notre Dame 2nd round: Mark Andrews TE Oklahoma 3rd round: Tremaine Edmunds LB Virginia Tech With these three picks we sure up our three biggest needs right now without reaching for anybody. In an Ideal world I would trade down into the bottom half of the first for more picks and hope than Nelson is still there. But without any trade these are my three targets right now. Nelson can be plugged in right away at left guard and dominate, Andrews can also be a game-changing starter at tight end right away, and Edmunds can take over the starting job from Timmons and finally give us a long, fast and athletic linebacker that can cover tight ends.
I've just started working on the offseason prospects, will not have anything personally until after the combine, which to me is an important part of the evaluation, but I will say this, Shaqueem Griffin will be on any mock draft I do.
Shaquem is good but a little undersized and has some issues missing tackles. Tremeain Edmunds on the other hand is 6'5 240, can run with most TEs and running backs plus he is a beast against the run.
I like it but doubt Andrews falls that far. But its an undervalued position and im a fan. Id rather see someone like Ronald Jones or Frank Ragnow in round 3.
1: R1P11 QB JOSH ROSEN UCLA 43: R2P11 TE MARK ANDREWS OKLAHOMA 75: R3P11 EDGE MARCUS DAVENPORT UTSA 113: R4P11 RB SONY MICHEL GEORGIA 132: R4P30 LB RASHAAN EVANS ALABAMA
I can top that. round 1..Bradley Chubb round 2..Vita Vea round 3..Quinten Nelson round 4..Derwin James round 5..Shaqueem Griffin round 6..Mark Andrews.. should I continue lol..
Out of curiosity, would that be your wishlist of prospects? Vea intrigues, especially if we do move Suh. I really like the idea of a strong DL, I think it is the best way to have a solid defense. Pocket pushing DL that can pressure the QB while stuffing the run, and then a DE who can just tear things up. The Griffin kid, is that the one missing a hand? Think I saw a feature on him and his brother Shaq before a Panthers game.
sure if you're using Fanspeak like i just did. I literally just drafted that team obviously once Aprils here a draft like mine will not happen.
Right now, and it will probably change, I'm leaning towards olb beriarra (sp) from Washington in the first. He can cover, blitz. He's a three down backer. He's fast but undersized at 230
From what I saw tonight I would be happy with R. Smith #3 from Georgia. That kid is going to be a great LB for todays NFL. #52 Clark was ballin too. He may be a 3rd rd DT/DE prospect.
I was just playing because the other guy listed all first round picks regardless of the round.. Yeah Shaqueem is the man with one hand..But his game and heart I want on our team.. Were not moving Suh, pretty sure we’re gonna restructure the contract.. I’m not a BPA type eval guy unless the situation calls for it like in the later rounds..I believe in balance and hitting on picks more than the other guys..
For this forecast I'm assuming that there will be 5 QB's taken in the top 10 picks, and some top level names will drop to the end of the 3rd and the middle of the 4th round. 1st round at 11 - Nelson, OG BPA. We select here for BPA with a bias for defense, if an NFL ready defender is available. 2nd round at 43 - Edmunds, ILB. We select here for need, not BPA, just for defensive linebackers. 3rd round at 75 - Holland, DE. We select here for need, either a QB or DE. 4th round at 113- Freeman, RB. We select here for need, either a QB or RB. 4th round at 132- Andrews, TE. We select here for need, either a QB or TE. 5th round - We select here for need, either a QB or a Linebacker (any position back there) 6th round - We select BPA, biased for a safety or running back. At this point we will do better getting get a FA QB. 7th round - We select BPA, offense or defense. UDFA's - We keep looking for the gold that doesn't glitter. We no longer have so many holes to fill that we need to go BPA at every selection and can expect that we cover a need. I expect the Front office will be using their draft board and looking to step back when possible in order to get more late round draft picks. Since this draft class does not seem to be highly gifted, we would gain more than we would loose by increasing our number of later round draft picks. Our track record over the last two years is beginning to show that our drafted players are working out at a much higher percentage than I would have believed and we are having some success with our UDFA's. Whatever the plan the coaches and front office are following for the draft, I am happy to see it has worked. I want to see more of the same disciplined drafting this year.
Can't truly say one way or the other whether or not Griffin will make it in the NFL but as to him being undersized, I remember another LB the Dolphins drafted that was undersized and everyone passed on...Zach Thomas
a guard at 11? I would be stunned at that. Lamp was top rated guard last year and he went in second round when many had him in first
Mike White QB will be interesting. Some have him second round pick. I do not feel he is as good as Doughty, but we shall see how he does at combine
Not since 2013 with Jon Cooper and Chance Warmack both going top 10. Neither lived up to it either. I think you can get value at the end of Round 1, but in the top 15 a guard is a waste.
I meant more was this your personal listing of those prospects? I know they are all high first rounders, I was curious about whether that order you had them in was the order you liked them should one fall.
No tex not my personal list just random first round names, I’ve just started to dive into the offseason and the prospects .. I’ll be here all offseason every day... I love the offseason, really do, I love the idea of being able to build a team with the right players to try and win championships.. I’m More into it then the regular season
This would be a good year to trade down. If someone wants a QB we may be able to deal and I think the value in the 20s isn't far removed from the teens at the positions we need
Let me ask you a question, let’s say you do take the guard Nelson from Notre Dame, let’s say he’s as good as you think and becomes a fixture at the pro bowl, at the end of the day, was he worth the value of the 11th pick?
That’s just crazy. You build an OL from the interior out, not vice versa. The shortest path from point A to B is a straight line. For some dumb reason teams love to build from the tackle inward, probably because left tackles are usually harder to find. But the fact is you still need good players at the interior spots particularly with a pocket QB and keeping that interior clean should be a priority when you have a QB coming off a serious knee injury. That said I like Price more then Nelson who is more of a finesse player imo. As I suggested in Club I think I’d rather go BPA (preferably De or QB) and then go Price and Ragnow in rounds 2 and 3. Then find a way to add Ronald Jones to mix with Drake. I think we would be very happy with the outcome.
. Not true, Brandon Scherff went I think 6th to the skins a few years ago. And he was very good before the injury this year.
He played tackle in college though, and ended up being converted to guard. Same with Zach Martin. You certainly can't spend 5 in a short span of time, but it is good to throw some in here and there. Even BB has done it with guys like Mankins and Solder. But in general I agree with the sentiment - if you cannot fill out an acceptable line with mid/low round picks and reasonable FA's ... you are doing it wrong. If you spend heavily with draft capital on the line, you will have problems elsewhere. Cowboys are a good example - they have invested heavily in their line, and last year it paid off. The year prior, and this year ... not so much. That line does little good if their defense can't stop people, QB can't make plays and they have sub-par RB's. They also heavily suffered depth wise. When Smith went down, they got eaten alive.
Scherff was still drafted as a guard. Someone in Club (I forget who...this was a year or two ago) did a study of the last 20 years drafts and 1st round guards stand an 80% chance of making at least one pro bowl in their career. It’s one of the safest bets there is in the draft. You can always find a bust or two but the point remains. If you’re looking for a safe play, it’s probably Guard.
You don’t need first round picks anywhere, the pats keep proving that. Until you actually do need them.
Like All-Pro fixture good, or Pro Bowl "Other guys decide they don't want to play in a meaningless game" good?
