After watching the game on the NFLN this morning, I came away with some insights...

Most surprising player: David Martin. He blocked well, he made a good tackle on STs. I am thoroughly impressed. I know Ginn should be mentioned, but Ginn is just living up to expectations, so I wasn't really surprised.

Most impressive Unit: All were impressive, but I think the LBs were exceptional.

Rookie Class: This group is going to be special, draft picks and UDFA. I think Lex Hilliard and Lionel Dotson are the only rookies that probably don't make the team. All of the others will not only make this team, but will contribute. I guess Murhphy is a wild card as well.

Most improved unit in preseason: STs coverage. They were all over KCs arse tonight.

A personal note to Jason Allen: Dont jump so early. It cost you two INTs tonight. Stay on your feet and run to the ball.

Most Disappointing aspect of game: Penalties, Penalties, Penalties. And of the worst kind...pre-snap, mis-formation, lack of concentration.

If we get our penalty situation fixed, look out.

  2. I know that at this point, I should be cautiously optimistic at best, but the more I see, the harder it is not to get really excited about the upcoming season. I agree, if we fix the penalty situation, we're in gear.

Yep the only real complaint is that penalty bug. I wonder if some of that just comes from the fact the refs are still in the "we scrutinize Miami more because they stink" mode. It does seem that if you are NE or Dallas, you see holding calls that never, ever get called.

Our punt coverage was poor in the Bucs games and kickoff coverage poor in the Jags game.

I thought Jason Allen played very well. They moved him to corner in the second half and he looked very comfortable. Yeah he got trucked on one play, but still came away with a pick later.

ST's looked better. They gang-tackled better this week. Not a whole lot of missed tackles.

I LOVED how the O'Line played. Donald Thomas, Jake Long and Smiley were great. No sacks allowed, gotta love it

I had a problem with the defense letting Croyle stay alive to make too many long third down conversions. They were getting pressure on him, but they weren't closing the deal quick enough. Other than that, I thought the team did very well.

Thats weird. They showed a few minutes of it last night after the game. Maybe they just haven't put it up yet?

I thought Crowder started to show his potential, and Roth, Starks, Merling, Langford were smothering.

Ginn well proved to me two weeks in a row that he is not just a return specialist, he is going to be a first or second WR in this league. Great hands, Excellent routes, outside sideline catching, over the middle catches.

The Oline was spectacular both on pass coverage and run blocking. Long got beat inside out on the one play but made up for it by shoving the DE away from Pennington after he got beat, great power and willingness not to give up on a play.

Thought our SP Teams were great tonight.

THought the D did a great job of not only getting after the QB but basically shutting down Larry Johnson who is a great back. Our run d is not going to be a problem this year.

I was really impressed two weeks in a row how effeciently we move the ball downfield. Even when we got a 2nd and 12 situation they kept cool and just made positve plays and managed the situation they were in. Not to mention score on several of their drives. Thats something I haven't seen this franchise do in a long time. I believe the O line is a bid reason for that. Pennington played fantastic again.

The penalties are frustrating but a couple came on snap counts, line ups. That will get fixed. On D our young guys were just jacked. They were anticipating plays and ready to steam roll the opponents. I'll take a couple of 5 yard plays if they are swarming the QB everyplay from the opening drive.

The biggest thing i noticed about the penalties is it didn't give the momentum back to the chiefs. Usually penalties would kill us mentally, well not this time. The penalties were spread out and we still forced them into punting situations and got the momentum right back. Great resiliency for a young team i must say.

Bring on the Jets, this team is going to be NASTY!

Yeah, that does happen, but it wasn't holding that was hurting us last night, as someone else already pointed out. It was false starts, offsides, illegal motion, that kind of stuff.

The other thing that bothered me was that we had something like six plays inside the five on the first drive and couldn't score.

But I am overemphasizing the negative. The team looks so much better than I expected.
