I was hoping you were posting to tell us Tannehill has been traded. Unfortunately all giving money to Tannebaum in free agency does is give him more money to overpay another mediocre player.

Tannehill is just getting his money sooner in a signing bonus but he isn’t saving the Dolphins any money in the long term. Personally I would
rather have the cap money available next year and not this year. Because the Dolphins aren’t going to make the playoffs in 2018 and they will be lucky to win 5 games.

I would rather wait and let the new FO and coaching staff decide how they want to rebuild this team once the season is completed. Hopefully Ross will finally get it right the next time he hires someone to run the organization but I doubt it.

This restructure freed up a lot of money for this year.

Are these numbers correct? Started out $19 million over the cap.

Tanny Restructure = $11.2 savings savings
Landry Trade = $15.9 million savings
    Timmons/Thomas cuts = $12.1 million savings
Jones Restructures = $6.6 million savings

Total savings = $45.8 million - $19 million = $26.8 million total for FA (not factoring Quinn/Amendola/Wilson yet)

Then they have another $17 million coming to them after June 1st. Is that right?

They weren't gonna save that much:

"Cutting Tannehill in 2019 would save the Dolphins around $15.4 million instead of the $18.7 million originally scheduled while the dead money such a move would leave rises from $2.3 million to $5.6 million." (Per the Herald)

According to Spotrac, they have ~$36m in cap space and that is including Quinn.

(EDIT*- I was reading it wrong. They have $25.7 with Quinn's cap hit.)

Does it make the distinction that the Suh money isn't available until after June 1st though?

Good that RT is willing to be a team player. Whilst there may be questions on his play and how he's recovered from his injury, there's no denying that the guy himself has done his best for the team to win despite some dodgy coaching during his early years.

OK cool .... so basically the $26 million I thought. EDIT: Wait no, I don't think it factors the June 1st thing. Those are his savings before.

I like that site btw - didn't know you could play around with rosters like that.

It is a cool site. If you go to Miami's player list there is a "Manage Roster" button. You can mess around with cutting, adding players and restructuring contracts.

Say what you want about Tannehill's play but this man has done everything for this franchise. Has done everything all the coaches ever wanted, took an affordable deal when he first signed after his rookie deal, and now restructures to make more room after injury. He's also had some good years and was an iron man up until recently. This dude is tough and wants to win clearly. I just hope we can do it.

In regards to the the Dolphins and how inept they have been been over the last 15 years, I agree I am miserable.

On the other hand, I am fortunate enough to live in Hawaii in retirement and get to play golf any day I desire. I have a wonderful wife I have been married to for 45 years and and a highly successful daughter and two great grandsons.

Sorry if my impatience with the numerous rebuilding jobs by the Dolphins front office over the last decade and a half upsets you. Unfortunately at my age I don’t have many years left to wait for this organization to be anything but mediocre at best. All I want and expect is a team that wins a SB. Anything less than winning a SB is irrelevant IMO.

If you are happy with Tannehill as the QB and the job the FO has done, so be it. Personally I am not happy with mediocrity in regards to the Dolphins and I expect more. If that makes me a miserable person, I can live with that.

  26. i don't care for #17 and think he is a bit impotent as a football player but I definitely tip my cap to him for doing this. I am sure he is feeling some pressure but he has always been a team guy it seems and a classy individual. Totally root for his success, without hesitation, but I doubt he will ever be transcendent. However, my primordial footballing mind was shaped by watching the great one in the OB so its always been a bit of a let down after those years. Anyways, respect to #17, would expect nothing less from a high caliber guy like him, but now it is time to **** or get off the pot - you aren't a kid anymore, you are a 30 yr old man with a bum knee and a lot of forgettable tape.

I feel like the reason Gase is such a big fan of RT is that as a person he's exactly what Gase wants from his side. Willing to put the team first, committed to keep improving, trying to help others improve as well as himself. Now if Gase can get the RT that shows up on occasion then we've already seen that you don't have to be a top 10 QB to make runs into the playoffs.

Gase is committed to Tanny, that much is now clear. While the OL with Sitton looks good and has some depth, there would be THREE starters with injury concerns (Sitton, Pouncey, and James). As long as Sitton gets a more incentive laden deal, I'm good with rolling those dice.

Add a TE and RB to the offense, then the remaining resources to defense. Oh, and a Kicker.

I think that's a very smart move since Miami had no intentions of walking from Tannehill. I don't think that puts us out of the draft for a QB; it merely signals that he's going to be the guy for the next three years while we develop a stud backup. I APPLAUD this move because it shows two things- a clear direction and complete faith in our starting QB.

Pardon my ignorance...but what did #17 do that is worthy of "tipping your cap"? He took $16 million that was due to him over two years and got it all in a lump sum. He made zero sacrifice whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong...I am not down on RT. He's an average QB and he gets paid like an average QB. Let's hope that the two years he's spent away from the game has helped him mentally become better prepared. Although I think Nick Foles is grossly underrated, you can win with QBs like him, Case Keenum and Ryan Tannehill.

This is very deep RB draft. We could get likely Bo Scarborough in the fourth round.

Dallas Goedert in the third round...

Dolphins actually can still easily get out of this deal after next year, however I think int is more likely we will have QB play that makes his cap hit a bargain.

It was an educated risk. Free up more money now, and WORST CASE we have to cut Ryan in 2019? Then we will simply have less money next offseason.

    Solid move.

That's what I would assume as well. This is a move that seems like it locks Tannehill into starting position for a couple of years. Which makes it seem like 1st rd target should go to something that can benefit the team while Tannehill is on the field.

I like Tannehill so I'm good with this decision(assuming I'm reading into it correctly).

The 1 thing this team has to get right is FA. Its painful how inept we are at finding talent in the off season.

I think if you look at the top QB's in the league you'll see the overwhelming majority sat on the bench for at least one season. I don't see how restructuring RT's contract would in and of itself be reason to not draft a QB. In fact, I see it as a possibility that RT has ONE more season to prove himself while a possible starter wait's in the wings. Hopefully, that's Mayfield. And ideally, Mayfield would have time to sit a couple of seasons behind RT and learn the game.
