I’m not seeing Mayfield with the Dolphins. This offseason rallying cry with the front office has been about “changing the culture” and emphasis on “intelligent players.” Mayfield getting arrested with the public intoxication, and then grabbing his crotch and taunting the Kansas sideline is certainly not changing a culture or a sign of intelligence from a player. It’s the opposite of what they’re looking for.

Adam Gase doesn’t like spread quarterbacks, and Mayfield is just another QB product of the spread offense and concepts that thrived in Lincoln Riley’s offense. By the way, I did like the imaginative wrinkles that Riley added with the double slant whips, in and out mesh, and the slot fade concept. Certainly fun to watch at times.

The word has been out, Mayfield can be rattled and you can get in his head. When a 1-11 Kansas team can get under your skin and in your head, how do you think he’ll respond to professional athletes and teams that are bigger, faster, and thrive on exposing a weakness? It’s like OBJ and Josh Norman, once the word is out players will do anything and everything to provoke a negative reaction.

Look at the Rose Bowl, and the Sooners were coasting in the first half. The second half Georgia ratcheted up the pressure, and Mayfield would get flummoxed. That horrible pass in the 4th quarter when he overshot his receiver by 5 yards was a byproduct of that.

Add in the lifestyle and night life that exists in Miami, and I don’t trust a kid with a delinquent history with millions of dollars and keeping his nose clean. It’s like adding sparks to dry tinder, and not a matter of if, but when it combusts. Entrusting an immature head case like Mayfield to be the face of the franchise would be a massive mistake, with the potential possibility of setting the franchise back another five years.

Stay the course with Ryan Tannehill for the next two years, and then reevaluate where they’re at. By that time, Tua Tagovailoa is eligible and the kind of QB that you would give up something akin to Fort Knox, in order to move up and acquire him for your team. Draft a QB later in the draft, and take care of the LB, TE, and OL position early in the draft. Give Ryan Tannehill, and the team, the best supporting cast as you can.

Looks like some scouts, coaches, NFL executives, and GM’s agree with me.
    ____________________________

"But there's the antics, the immaturity. I know kids these days are big into 'swagger' and the hype. Social media has created this aura, this culture around kids. And Baker is a kid who I think has bought into this mentality.

"Does he fall out of the first round? Yeah, maybe. It wasn't a good look. You want emotion from your quarterback, but you don’t want emotional instability. He's going to have to overcome this with a lot of teams. Factor in that he's not the tallest quarterback in the world and that's two things that will give pause to some teams. Can he start in the NFL? I think so. Is he a risk? Yeah, I think that too," said one GM.

“Baker has a pattern of disrespect,” a scout told Mary Kay Cabot. “Off-the-field, he’s Johnny Manziel.”

Said a coach: “He needs work. He’s going to be a challenge.”

Said a high-level NFL personnel executive, per Cabot: “He has not shown anywhere near enough emotional maturity to handle what’s coming his way. ... A lot of Manziel characteristics.”

Hmm, yeah, trust the analysis of the organization that drafted Girlziel. Great source.

And, fall out of the first round, is either smoke screen or the biggest crock of **** I've seen cooked up in quite some time.

Eh, I’ve seen many QB’s fall in the draft and anything can happen. I don’t see him dropping that much either, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he did given the red flags surrounding him.

Derek Carr, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Dan Marino, and Brett Favre immediately come to mind. Nothing is set stone.

NFL teams are terrible at this stuff. If there were a competing league not so entrenched in BS like the NFL, I'd put good money down they'd draft better. Philip Rivers is an *******, Ben Roethlisberger is more likely than not to be a rapist, Brett Favre had substance abuse issues and was an ******* to Jenn Sterger, Jameis Winston was the least mature person in the state of Florida coming out, and Cam Newton stole a laptop at Florida. All of this to say, personal flaws are rarely, if ever, correlated to bad play on the field. The example in my head right now is Josh Freeman, but he became a coke head in the NFL. Good players are good and bad players are bad. There isn't a single piece of evidence that someone being an ******* disqualifies them from being a good NFL player.

I'm honestly tired of this holier than thou BS built on adages and rules of thumb that have no basis in reality. There's no such thing as a perfect person. I surely hope these people advocated against Greg Hardy being in the NFL and never called Michael Sam a distraction. The NFL had no issue with Hardy and didn't want to touch Sam so I'm not really interested in their personal evaluation skills. If Mayfield could guarantee 12 wins every season, no one would even care who he was as a person.

To each their own. I've got morals and the desperation to commandeer a few wins will never mask character issues . Not throwing shade at Mayfield here, just a general statement directed at your generalities.

Yeah, being an ******* is a lot different than being a rapist. I can live with the former, but the latter I never want on my team. And Favre had a legit problem with prescribed pain pills. It's not like he was snorting coke.

I don't think NOT wanting a thief, crack head, or rapist on my team makes me "holier than thou".

He's playing football. What does that have to do with anything? He didn't hurt a single person. The moral schtick is getting old. Leave it to Beaver was a TV show. Do you really think it's immoral for a college student to get drunk and rowdy? I think it's a mistake but that doesn't disqualify him from a job. Fans like to divorce sports from their status as businesses, but you're basically saying he can't do a job because he got drunk and rowdy that one time.

It's not a matter of "softening" or "minimizing" mistakes--but more of are they the mistakes of youthful indiscretions, or are they mistakes that are likely to repeat themselves. PI and fleeing are mistakes, but probably not ones he will make again.

Here are D. Brees's combo numbers...VERY similar, almost eerily, to Mayfield's.

I never said I want any trash human being. I had a huge problem with Greg Hardy playing, Riley Cooper, Ray Rice, etc. But a college kid who got drunk and did something stupid is not a sign of immorality, it's immaturity.

You all really misunderstood what I was saying. My point was that the nfl has allowed rapists and *******s to play and fans didn't bat an eye, but Mayfield got drunk and some people want to play the moral card.

With the Jets trading up, the top 3 players will almost certainly be QBs. Barkley probably goes to #4 now that Cleveland can't take a chance on waiting for a QB at that spot. I just don't see NYG being crazy enough to skip a QB.

    Agreed

You have to willing to take a qb at 1 if you are willing to take him at 4

The owners gonna hold you accountable either way if you have a conviction at 4 you have it at 1 too

It had everything to do with it, since you asked the question of: “If Mayfield could guarantee 12 wins every season, no one would even care who he was as a person.”

You were saying that it doesn’t matter what kind of person that he is, so long as the bottom line is reached: the guaranteed 12 wins.

I completely disagree, and would care.

Yes, it’s immaturity, but you yourself added that hypothetical immoral clause by asking the question prior.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with a college kid getting drunk, but something else altogether when a kid gets drunk and is arrested by the police because of it. There’s a distinction between those two scenarios, obviously.

At any rate, I hope he’s in a Jets uniform. If he messes up again let it be their problem to deal with, and hopefully sets that franchise back a number of years. They’ve already given up a lot of capital, so they better be right.

If he didn’t pull the crotch-grabbing incident on national television because Kansas got into his head, I’d be more inclined to agree with you. There’s a pattern there, and it’s not positive.

Sure, he could never be in any kind of trouble ever again, but that’s not something that I’m willing to bet on for a kid that’s supposed to represent the face of a franchise. No way do I go all in with my chips, given what’s transpired and with an eye on the future.

Edit: I do like your Brees comparison, and see some of those similarities. Not to mention a similar stature, and both coming from spread offenses - when Brees thrived in Tiller’s “basketball on grass.” I get that part of it, but just have an issue with the other stuff.
