    Rest in peace Mr. Huizenga.

The guy always gave the Dolphins 150%, it never panned out like he wanted but he always provided unlimited sources, no dollar was too high for success, and he loved this team.

He was a much better owner than he was given credit for. He was always willing to spend the money to hire the those individuals considered the best at the time he hired them. Unfortunately it just never worked out for him as the Dolphins owner.

South Florida was able to bring Major League Baseball as well as Hockey to the area because of him.
The only issue I ever had with him is that he sold the Dolphins to Ross.

    May he rest in peace.

    Wat?

Ross is doing the same thing ... spending money and hiring people largely considered the best. As much contempt as fans may have for TBum, he is still highly regarded in the NFL. And Gase was considered the hottest thing around. Your contempt for Ross makes 0 sense in this context. You should be thanking your stripes it went to Ross and not some bum who slashes costs, refuses to spend money and/or moves the team (granted you may not care about the latter). Or, you know, actual criminals like the Wylfs and Haslams.

    Wat? Wat? Wat?

Hiring people largely considered the best? Or hiring his friend to over see the franchise whom is largely considered terrible? Don't give me that "still highly regarded". The only job he could get was a consulting job from his buddy. Turned that into, who knows what job basically.

He seemed like he always did his best while he owned the team. Hiring Jimmy was the right move, even if it didn't pan out. Letting Jimmy make Wanny his sucessor was a bad choice. The team always was respected while he was the owner though. That's not been the case since he sold it to Ross (not always Ross' fault).

Wanny was hand chosen by Jimmy Johnson. He trusted Jimmy. That was a failure on Jimmy's end. Wanny wasn't Huizenga's friend.

Doesn't matter. Huizenga approved it and kept him on for many years. It was a disastrous hire that set us on this course.

Didn't say it was a great decision. Making a bad decision based on putting your trust into someone you trust in terms of football, while acknowledging you don't know much about football, is different than making a bad decision because you want to hire your friend and that person has already failed miserably at running a franchise.

Stop the madness gentlemen. This is and should be a tribute thread to the former owner of the Dolphins, not a pissing contest.

Wayne Huizenga was incredibly diversified, creating Blockbuster Video, Waste Management, bringing baseball to Florida with the Marlins, Auto Nation...the man had an incredible talent to him. Following in the footsteps of Joe Robbie was no easy task but as a Dolphins fan, I thank you for stepping up and taking the reigns

Condolences to the entire Huizenga family and Rest In Peace.

I don't understand why people have this desire to romanticize Huizenga.

He didn't do anything for you, or your enjoyment. He did it for your money. Anything that you liked was inconsequential to that. If he could successfully create a business model around losing every game and telling the fans to eat ****, he'd have done it.

Maybe. I read a long time ago he lost like $40 million the year the Marlins won the world series....So obviously that is not completely true.

There was zero interest by any other NFL team to hire Tannebaum after the disaster he left with the Jets. The hiring of Tannebaum was the worst mistake Ross has made as the owner of the Dolphins and just shows that he learned nothing from his mistakes in in earlier Dolphin hirings.

I have no comtempt for Ross as a businessman. I think he is a genius when it comes to real estate investing and I give him all the credit in the world for making the Billions of dollars he has in his career. I just don’t believe he has a clue as an NFL owner and the Dolphins will never be anything more than mediocre with him as the teams owner.

The fact he is willing to spend money is irrelevant if the majority of that money being spend by Tannebaum is on players who are average or worse. So far that has been the case under the Ross ownership and it has continued during this free agency period, IMO.

That was a bunch of dishonest bull**** Huizenga used to try and scam taxpayers out of money for a new stadium. He absolutely made money that year and pretended like he didn't get the profits from the stadium, the teams cable network, etc. The fire sale was almost certainly gratuitous, then he turned around and sold the team as soon as he used up the tax benefits from his purchase.

    His record was good:

    A) because of the players he inherited from Jimmy.

    B) in spite of himself, and his insistence on not having a quality QB .

He added very few good players to the team after he took over, and routinely passed on better options in the draft. Everyone saw it as it happened. One Bonehead move after another.

And I once went game by game and found that from 2000-03, there were seven times that the team took the lead into halftime, failed to score a single offensive TD in the second half, and lost the game. His ultra conservative methods were maddening .

As bill Parcells says you are only as good as your record says you are!Like it or not he has been more sucessful than the last the last 4 and current coach.Don't misunderstand me he was not a great coach (jamal flecher over brees comes to mind)but facts are facts. We have had some ****ty coaches and the jury is still out on the current one.

All i can give wannstedt credit for is his defense was legit, and it was legit in college football too. But the defense stayed on the field too long they would gas out in the end of games because his offense couldnt move the chains..

I could give a crap about anything that Parcells has ever said. Never could stand the guy, before, during or after he was involved with the Fins. Polar opposite of the kind of guy I like in charge of a team.

I don't like him either but the statement is correct!I didn't like wanny but the fact remains he was the most successful coach of the 5 we have had since johnson.
Saban would have been if he either drafted rodgers or signed brees but he didn't.
The Dolphins only playoff win in the last 16 years was under wanny so case closed.

Having the leading rusher and leading sacker and missing the playoffs, makes Wannidiot THE worst coach we've ever had. Then factoring in what he did with the drafts...then there's been no one worse to this franchise...EVER.

No one has ever squandered so much talent on nothing than Wannidiot. Being happy with his double digit wins, when he should have had a dynasty, is the epitome of "not getting it" as a fan.

Nonsense. Wannstedt was the anti-Jimmy. Jimmy forgot more about how to draft players than Wannstedt ever knew, and Wannstedt never met a passing play that he liked. And that playoff win was with the team he inherited. How many did he have after that.

So how many playoff wins do the rest of these coaches have? You people need to admitt these were the glory years of this sorry *** franchise since marino. You people would be circle jerking if gase went 11-5,11-5,9-7,10-6 in his first 4 years.
The sad part is I never said wanny was a good coach just the most successful.Regardless of how he got there the numbers don't lie.

He had no success and it was his mismanagement that lead to all the BS that followed. Wanny was the slow spin around the drain, inexorable. Cam was just the flush of the toilet. We are still trying to rebuild from the legacy of Wanny. An atrociously miserable coach. He was a less successful version of Jeff Fischer.

Wanny was the beginning, and no, we have not recovered from it still. This is not unique in the NFL though, it's not a failing of Miami specifically. Saban provided a temporary bump up but it didn't last, Pennington the same. Wanny is, was and always will be a terrible coach, no other way around it. That anyone would try to defend his era is mind bogglingly stupid.

Once again I never said wanny was a good coach but facts are facts.I know its not saying much but his teams were the most successful.
What are you people comparing him to?Saban who bailed on us,cameron who jason taylor said was a complete idiot,Field goal clapping sparano, the robot philbin and the jury is still out on gase.
I don't get the hatred because these 5 other guys have 2 wildcard losses between all of them. All these coaches have sucked for us but he is the most hated.
You went so far as to say 14 years later he is the reason we still suck. This is the single dumbest statement I have heard in all my years of posting on this site.

"What a dumb comment" says the Wanny defender. Yeah, gtfo with that lol. Wanny was a terrible coach whose record was purely due to the talent that Jimmy left him. Wanny dragged our team into the depths, and we have yet to get over it. Is he specifically the cause of our problems right now? No, nobody is saying that you nincompoop. I said, and it is clear, that Wanny's tenure brought us down to a level we haven't been able to raise above since he left. He **** the bed and we are still looking for fresh sheets. Wanny is the most hated because he did the least with the most. He ruined careers. He failed to advance us, he failed to find a QB to replace Marino, he failed. Bottom line, he was a failure. Saying he was the "most successful" failure of our failures is meaningless and just dumb.

You act as though jimmy johnson won all these super bowls with this same talent and the next year we were in the basement.
The marino comment is also stupid because none of these coaches have been able to find a QB to replace marino!Maybe johnson should have found his replacement if he was such a great talent evaluator.Johnson build a great defence but he did nothing on the offensive side.
How about you name the coaches that have been better. To me they have all sucked and I will go with the one that sucked the less and actually won some games.
    Nincompoop really?Come on man!

What is a better example of excellent coaching......

Backing into the playoffs with a great team but losing in the first round.

    Or

Missing the playoffs with a poor team but getting to 9 wins.

This team was good never great.Great teams don't blow a 30-7 second half lead.
The defence was good but not great and the offence wasn't exactly loaded with the exception of rickey.

Christ how dense can you be here? I'm not saying anyone has been clearly better, though Gase ansolutely has a shot. I'm saying, rightfully and truthfully, that Wanny was hot garbage. He's Jeff Fisher without a super bowl run. He ran this team into the dirt and wasted a great defense. Jimmy built a good foundation but clearly didn' have the heart, so he handed it over to Wanny who did a whole bunch of nothing while making godawful personnel and coaching decisions. He was awful in Chicago, he was awful with us and he want great at Pitt either. It's really that simple.

The question is irrelevent. If this was a great team like you say because he built it JJ would have one a superbowl.
I will take 11-5 and 1 playoff win over 9-7 and 1 playoff win especially when the 9-7 team had a hall of fame QB.
This is like a republican vs democrat debate.I don't agree with you two and you don't agree with me.Leave at that!
    Lets move on to 2018.
