I had an interesting conversation with a long-time Dolphins fan who has a ton of insight into the NFL due to his profession. And we were going through the moves that other teams will inevitably make- the Bills almost have to try and move up to #2 for Mayfield IF he doesn't go #1 overall. In fact, four of the top five players selected will likely be quarterbacks, which means that names like Chubb, Fitzpatrick, Nelson and Barkley have a very good shot at being available at the #'5 thru 8 positions. Smith will likely go in the top 10 as well, along with Ward and James. So there's a lot of interesting names and possibly the top 5 positional players that aren't a quarterback will fall in those 6-10 slots. So if Miami is truly sold on Barkley being a generational talent, I truly believe he can be grabbed with the #5 or #6 overall pick. And the cost of making that move might be giving up a 2nd and a 5th to get the best offensive player in the entire draft. Of course, the board has to shake out with the QB hungry teams betting the farm to move up, and I'm guessing there will be several since there aren't many prospects on the near horizon. NE has to replace Brady in the next 2-3 years, so now's the time for them. The Giants have a similar situation with Manning, so I think they stay put and get their future QB. Heck, the Bills don't even have a QB... Anyway, I have a feeling that the draft boards as we anticipate them are extremely off.....the elite 2-4 players not under center are going to be up for grabs much later than anticipated. And I really think giving up our 1st/2nd plus a mid-round pick next season gets us one of those names. So I'll say it now- Saquan Barkley to Miami! Game on!
I really want Edmunds if he can be had without moving up. I don’t want Miami to move up at all. I hope what you are saying happens and it causes Edmunds or smith to fall to us (hopefully Edmunds or someone else who is expected to be gone we could really use).....Ill be Ok with Vae but that’s only if the top 2 LB’s are gone and no one falls expected to be gone in the top 6 or so. I would bet just about anything 3 qb’s will be gone....hopefully 4, if we cant get one of the top 2-3 which we wont without moving up, or someone crazy dropping like what happened with Tunsel......I cant wait to see who we get and what happens in the other rounds also.
Four things will have to happen for this scenario to play out. 1. Cleveland will have to select a QB with the first overall pick, which is far from guaranteed. Their GM is being incredibly tight-lipped about the selection, and he won't even tell the owner who it is until Wednesday night. 2. The Giants will have to either opt for a QB at No. 2, or trade the selection to a team looking to leapfrog the Jets for a QB. If the pick isn't traded, it will almost certainly be Barkley donning the blue and red. 3. Cleveland will have to trade away No. 4 to another QB-needy team. This would mean QB's go 1, 2, 3, 4. 4. Miami would then have to secure a trade with Denver for No. 5. A bit unlikely, but not entirely implausible. I'm more interested in staying put and waiting for a blue-chip prospect to fall to us with quarterbacks flying off the board.
I know I’m only a stupid, know-nowt limey but my fear is that if the Jets take Baker Mayfield, Buffalo take one of the Joshes and New England drop on Jackson in the later rounds, as has been predicted in a few ‘expert’ drafts I’ve seen, the Dolphins wilderness years will continue to be long and cold for a lengthy period of time to come.
Cleveland is going QB at 1. With the Jets having traded up, NYG probably going QB/trading back to a team that wants a QB, and Denver champing at the bit to draft a QB, Cleveland won't want to just not get one. IND is almost guaranteed to take Barkley if he drops to 6 so Cleveland is very likely, IMO, to take Barkley at 4 if they rate him very highly. This is beyond a pipe dream. If other teams view him as generational, Miami will have to trade up for him. He's a candidate for the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th picks. All of those teams except Chicago (young QB) are paying big money to QB's and 4 of the top 5 picks look to be QB's. There's no way Miami sits at 11 and gets Barkley, nor is there any reason to trade up for a RB. RB value has been consistently falling over the past two decades now. Considering he could conceivably go at 6 of the first 10 picks, Miami would have to pay handsomely to get Barkley. Miami would deserve failure if it expended extra resources for Barkley given the huge holes in the roster. That's just bad team management.
I just cant imagine him getting past the Giants. Only way is if they trade out of the pick for a small draft fortune.
No way they stand pat and don't take a QB imo. You know the Jets offered at least what they gave Indy to the Giants first, and it was obviously rejected. While I am not opposed to spending a fairly high pick on RB (I liked Zeke and Fournette where they went), passing on that offer for a RB is - like Carib noted above - bad team management. I know they are publicly falling all over each other in New York to praise Eli and talk about how he still has 2+ years left. Garbage - that dude is finished, even with OBJ and Barkley. If they are married to 1 QB and don't ensure it through a low value swap to #1 and see him go to Cleveland, they need to take the Bills or Cardinals to the cleaners to start replenishing some of the talent they have bled away and missed on.
He's my favorite player in this draft, but I find it highly unlikely that he ends up in Miami. As I said....He's my favorite player and the one guy (if I had to pick one) that I would take in this draft. He's going to be a superstar in the NFL. With that said, I think the team (as well am I) is very high on Kenyan Drake. I think he more than showed enough to us last year to own the job going into next season. He's obviously going to need a compliment or at least a back that can split carries with him, so I do think we will be drafting a running back at some point. I just don't think it will be Barkley (as awesome as that would be).
No, if four QBs go 1-4 and Miami traded up to #5 you take Chubb. Imagine having Wake, Harris, Quinn and Chubb on third and long. However, Denver would be insane to trade away the chance to pair Chubb with Von Miller.
I think Denver does take Chubb, which is why I said Barkley may-well go all the way to #6 if the stars align and people get QB crazy. I'm not saying Barkley is a lock for Miami or anything though....I was just saying it's a possibility and the cost wouldn't be ridiculous to hop five slots. I personally believe that Barkley is a generational talent and will dominate in the NFL for a decade or better. He reminds me of a powerhouse Barry Sanders- which darn near defies logic. I think he's the only must-have player in the first round. With that said, I am hoping you tech guys are finishing up the Barkley gas mask bong video to release tomorrow AM! =)
Would I trade a 2nd and 5th round pick to get Barkley? I'm torn. On the one hand I'd love to see us get our Todd Gurley or Ezekiel Elliot, but on the other I am actually a big fan of Kenyan Drake and think we would be better off retaining our draft picks and looking find a tag team partner for him. This year there is a pretty good deep class of running backs and we could find a real gem on day two. Looking at walterfootball, they have Kerryon Johnson (Auburn) going 43rd, Ronald Jones (USC) going 44th, Nick Chubb (Georgia) going 49th in round two. Any one of that trio could be an ideal partner to Drake. Alternatively we could wait until day three to find someone because we do have Frank Gore on the roster. For me, I look at the options available to us at #11 and I think we are better off staying put at that position. Even if we see a run on quarterbacks, let's say Allen, Darnold, Rosen and Mayfield all go in the top five. With Fitzpatrick, Chubb, Barkley, Nelson, Smith and Edmunds rounding off the top ten. That still leaves us Vita Vea, Derwin James, Denzel Ward (etc) or one of those players in the non-QB group if one of what I just listed now go in the top ten. It is a nice position to be in because we can grab a really talented player and retain our existing picks. I'll be honest, there is only one scenario in which I would trade up, and that is if we are going for a quarterback because we have found "our guy". Let's say we have fallen in love with Baker Mayfield and know the Browns are going to draft Allen, Darnold or Rosen first overall and the Jets are going to take him if he's there at three. At that point I could understand it if we decided to trade up to second overall in order to get "our guy". Likewise if "our guy" is still on the board after the top three picks have gone, I could understand it if we traded up with the Browns to prevent the Broncos taking that player. That is really the only time I would consider trading up because with the way our roster is currently shaped we need an upgrade at DT (Vea, Da'ron), LB (Smith, Edmunds), DB (Fitzpatrick or James, Nelson and Hughes) and we should have a good choice of players to pick from.
No way should we move up at all to get Barkley. if he falls to 11, then we can pull the trigger. much better value to get a very good RB in 2nd round
