Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have had internal discussions about extending Wake’s deal through the 2019 season. Those internal discussions have not progressed to negotiations with Wake at this point. Wake remained an integral part of the Miami defense in 2017 by starting every game and providing 10.5 sacks off the edge. Wake had 11.5 sacks in 2016 and his 92 career sacks leave him second in franchise history behind Jason Taylor. Wake is set to make a base salary of $8 million in 2018 in the final year of the two-year deal he signed in 2017.
Is it a restructure or simply an extension? You typically only restructure if you need cap space to sign someone. Is there anyone else the Dolphins are considering to add right now?
That's a tough conversation because Wake should have slowed down by now...it seems like he literally defies physics year after year.
I have no problem with an extension. The man has shown no signs of slowing and plays with everything he's got. I'm not saying they should sign him to a 3 year $40m contract, but a 1-2 year (with an out if he slows this season) at $8m per seems fair.
I thought he showed some signs of slowing down last year. A couple of times late in the game where Miami needed him, he wasn’t really around. Missed opportunities/sacks. Love Wake, but I saw a little bit of age showing. Nothing remarkable. Just, he’s older. It happens.
You saw wrong. Wake played just about as well as he's ever played last year. He had missed sacks before when he was younger. Doesn't mean it's because he is old.
I have to agree. The man is a machine and I haven't noticed any change to his play or intensity. Now, that will most certainly change at some point, but it hasn't yet.
I think wake should go for the record..oldest defensive player ever..his dedication and science to his craft is unprecedented, lets see how far he can go, even in a reserved role later on.
No, I didnt. There were several potential gamechanging opportunities he missed. He gassed late in games which seemed atypical of his play. He looked much better in ‘16 because he was on a pitch count due to his previous Achilles injury. He should be put on a pitch count this year. You’re not as good as you think.
Bruce Smith played five years beyond Wake's age to this point, and had 34 sacks in those seasons. If Wake could achieve that, it would be amazing.
