You have Jets players saying that they learned all Detroit's hand signals while watching film and they knew where the ball was going most of the time. AKA, they had Patriot's-level intelligence. It's not that hard to win when it's essentially a fixed game.

It’s really stupid for their players to publicly admit they knew Detroit’s hand signals..

This is quite normal, and happens all the time due to film study to uncover nuances, tendencies, tells, etc. It was only a story because of the blowout.

I am encouraged by the fact that the Jets were stealing the Lions signals. It seemed like it was the case. I think mixing it up on Darnold--dropping 8 when we show blitz...delayed blitz when we are showing coverage, and just the DEs winning their matchups with their OTs will go a long way to confusing him. Of course, we have to stop their run game. Raekwon has to play way better than he did Sunday. He was not good...slow to react and slow to get to the ball carrier. If they run for 5 yards a carry, SD will torch us like he did the Lions.

Offensively, obviously RT can't make the "RT Bonehead Plays" that he makes. This has to stop. Drake needs to hit a big play or two. This is a critical game. If we win, we suddenly are in great position to make a run this season; two AFC games, two victories.

Of course it happens, but players don't always admit they knew the signals.

Yes, but rightly so. Film study happens all the time but film study leading to blowouts doesn't. So if during normal study they were able to learn enough about the offense to be able to predict and demolish it then that's worth pointing out and it's a serious issue for the Lions to fix.

I wouldn't assume this necessarily means cheating on the part of the Jets. It could mean they're paying very close attention to study, being diligent, and that might be a wake up call for any laziness by OC's etc in their hand signals or any 'tells' they might have. Then again, it could just mean the Lions are horrible.

Still, anyone remember "Go" vs. "Go, Go"?

Here's how I see it. Detroit is a bad team and has been for years! The last time they had any legitimacy was under Wayne Fontes with Barry Sanders. Matt Patricia goes into an organization that has been in chaos for so long, it'll take years to turn them around.

The Jets beat up a weakling, nothing more. I watched Darnold in the Cotton Bowl. Pressure him and he can't hit the broad side of a barn

Some Dolphins fans are under-rating the Jets.

On MNF I saw an opportunistic defense pressure a QB into making bad decisions and a secondary fully capable of intercepting the ball. Moreover, the Jets apparently have an offense fully capable of moving the chains and scoring a few TDs.

To me, this is a game where (sadly) the home teams wins unless the road team does something special. Miami has to play great defense and weather the early storm of energy the Jets and their fans are sure to bring.

I'm an SC guy so it pains me that Darnold went to the Jets. I want to root for him but just can't. Not the Jets. Of all teams. The F'n Jets. Wonder if the remnants of the hurricane will impact the field for this weekends game.

Jets Wire Interview / Antwan Stanley

Jets fans riding high and see them putting away the Dolphins easily!

    https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/2018/09/13/5-questions-with-jets-wire-prior-to-game-vs-dolphins/

Dolphins Wire: How would you assess Sam Darnold’s performance on Monday night?
Jets Wire: First and foremost, I was incredibly impressed with how the rookie shook off the leadoff pick-six like it was nothing. Darnold has some serious poise – everyone says he’s unflappable – and it showed Monday night. Aside from his demeanor, it was obvious that the Jets are going to make good use of Darnold’s mobility. I wouldn’t call him a speedster, but his legs certainly make him a dual threat. He was constantly scrambling and escaping pressure while the Jets incorporated plenty of play-action and RPOs. He even got a designed keep. All in all, it couldn’t have been a better debut following that first throw.

Isaiah Crowell rushed for over 100 yards on just 10 carries. Do you think his performance is sustainable the rest of the season?
That type of efficiency won’t last all season, but I do see Crowell putting up some big numbers. He’s a bulldozer, a physical back that the Jets have been lacking since Chris Ivory. He’s also a capable catcher out of the backfield, something we didn’t get to see Monday. The Jets will rely on him and the run game to take some pressure off Darnold.

Darron Lee recorded two interceptions against the Lions. What does he have to do in order to take his game to the next level?
Just play consistent, smart football. That’s been his biggest struggle throughout his career, because he’s definitely shown some flashes prior to Monday. He doesn’t have to pick a pass off every game, though. The Jets just need him to be alert as their defensive signal caller and not miss tackles on a weekly basis.

The Jets were 25th in total defense last year but they looked great against the Lions. What are your projections for that unit this year?
Gang Green’s defense is going to be a serious threat, even if it is lacking a legitimate pass rush. The secondary – aka New Jack City – was dominant against a talented Lions passing attack. That was with Marcus Maye out for the game and Trumaine Johnson and Buster Skrine suffering injuries during it. The front may not be imposing, but I expect the defensive backfield to pick up any and all slack.

    Dolphins/Jets prediction this weekend?
The Jets are going to win another one in convincing fashion, and homefield advantage is going to be a big reason why. Expect MetLife Stadium to be a madhouse this Sunday, as Jets fans finally have a team and a quarterback they can believe in. New York won’t put 48 points on the board again, but I don’t see Miami hanging around too long.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/lions-bad-matt-patricias-debut-jets-even-knew-playbook-055515553.html

"DETROIT – With a little more than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter Monday night, the Detroit Lions lined up for third-and-1 from their own 34-yard line. Matthew Stafford was in shotgun, with running back Theo Riddick to his left. The Lions had three wideouts, but the New York Jets knew not to be too concerned about them.

This was a formation the Jets had seen the Lions run previously, in years past under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who was retained by new head coach Matt Patricia. Or maybe it was in preseason play. Or maybe both. It didn’t matter.

Third-and-short, and the Jets said they knew the play would be a short pass to Riddick coming out of the backfield, with wideout Golden Tate running a rub route/pick on the linebacker – in this case, Darron Lee – to create space for Riddick.

The Jets had watched film and practiced against it all week. Lee had become adept at slipping the pick and jumping the route, but he kept dropping potential interceptions, arriving a fraction of a second too late. As he saw the formation, he vowed this would be different. So, too, did safety Jamal Adams who began shouting at Lee in case he was unaware of the play the Lions were about to run.

“I told him, ‘Here it comes,’ ” Adams said.

Lee, however, didn’t need reminding. This was too obvious. As the play unfolded, Lee first identified Tate and jumped to avoid him. He then ran directly to the spot in front of Riddick where he thought Stafford would throw. As he arrived, so did the ball.

This time Lee secured the interception and turned the other way, racing 36 yards for a pick-six. Adams trailed him all the way, screaming in delight. As they crossed into the end zone, he tried to tackle his teammate only to crash into the padded wall.

Afterward they sat in the Ford Field visitor’s locker room and smiled and laughed and celebrated.

    New York 48, Detroit 17.

As the Lions tried to figure out what happened to create a nightmare of a season opener, the Jets just toasted a night out of their wildest dreams – Detroit all but telegraphing its plays and making all the Jets’ prep work pay off. The result was five interceptions of Lions quarterbacks, including four of Stafford.

“We were calling out their plays as he was getting up to the line,” Lee said.

“Film study,” Adams said. “The offense paints a picture. They give us little tips.”

They gave more than little tips. These were huge signs. The Jets stepped in front of routes, blew up screen passes and jammed running lanes.

A lot has to go wrong for an NFL team to get humiliated like the Lions did on Monday night. And a lot did. The Lions couldn’t run the ball (39 yards), couldn’t tackle well (they were scorched by long plays) and couldn’t compete on special teams – they yielded a punt return touchdown and missed two field goals.

Most horrifying for the Lions, though, was that here in the opening game of Patricia’s tenure, Jets coach Todd Bowles and his staff just annihilated them in preparation, game plan and execution.

“That’s called studying,” cornerback Trumaine Johnson said. “That’s called studying.”

The normally reliable Stafford looked lost. The supposedly revamped running attack went nowhere. Defensively, the Lions were an equal mess. They gave up a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown, a 62-yard rush for a touchdown, a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 41-yard pass for a touchdown. They allowed 31 points in the third quarter alone.

They were basically doomed from the start.

As coaching debuts go, Patricia’s was about as bad as could be imagined, and not just because of the final score or the general mood of the place. Lions fans began booing early. Then often. Then loudly. Then eventually hardly at all because most of them just left rather than keep witnessing the slaughter."

IMO, teams are just learning about Darnold. I am not taking away from his play, he did some good things against Detroit, but let’s see how he does after defensive coordinators learn more about him. As for their game, it looked to me like Stafford screwed the pooch. His poor play and decision making in the 1st half set them up for an asswhipping in the 2nd. I am not taking anything away from the Jets. IMO, this will be a tough one. It always is. The good thing for us is we usually meet their intensity.

Well, we've intentionally hidden as much of our offense as possible, so the Jets won't have that massive advantage going into game two. I expect it to be competitive on both sides of the ball and it's going to be a brawl, but I think the Jets are under-estimating us and we're going to take them by surprise.

Have you noticed that many of the "better" players on bad teams complain about a new head coach unless he pampers them. It has taken Gase two years to remove and replace most of those bad attitude players while trying to get the best out of them while they were here. He got rid of the obvious fakes first and the talented but bad attitude players later. For the most part, he did make chicken salad out of chicken***.

In all fairness to Patricia, he's now trying to make chicken salad out of chicken****. His experience with the patriots was in a "command and control" environment. It works for them. It may work for him after he jettisons a lot of the lions current players.

His strict attitude looks like it is already identifying some "good" players who are actually bigger problems than assets, and will be a determining factor in ridding the team of them, similar to what we did with some of our offensive linemen in 2016. Let's see who he gets rid of by mid season.

I would not be surprised if he uses this year to establish an "it's my way or the highway" attitude to establish control of the team by not being afraid to let losses pile up, knowing it improves his ability to get better control of the players he keeps, more good draft positions and makes it easier for him to selectively trade off some existing "good" players for more draft positions or FA's over the next two years.

I'm not saying he is going to tank on purpose, but that he doesn't care if they do tank since it will be a "positive" in reaching some longer range goals such as better draft positions, potential trades during the season coupled with free agency as he selectively removes problem players throughout this season. If he can achieve most of that and not tank, so much the better. The one thing he should not do is let fear dictate keeping and using players to satisfy them.

In the end, its the players who have to satisfy the coach!

That's on Gase not RT. He's in charge of playcalling. We should not have let Landry walk if we were gonna keep this kind of passing offense.

Completely disagree. They went 9-7 last year and have a franchise QB. The 'Patriot Way' has literally only worked for BB - his coaching 'tree' is basically a forest fire. There is a reason that the Patriot Way is a complete failure outside of New England, it is singularly dependent on BB and TB. It is also predicated on winning. It's a sacrifice - New England churns you up and spits out a husk of a player, but you win while you are there.

Nobody wants to be at the ground level for that though, and players generally don't respond well unless they are entering a winning culture with a freak of a leader both off (BB) and on (TB) the field. Detroit is and has neither. As far as tanking goes, he won't get the chance. Again, he was coming into a winning situation and his job was to get the team over the hump that Caldwell couldn't. If Patricia wins 4 or less games and displays the complete disorganization that he did in game 1 and through the preseason he will be gone as will the GM. The players and coach have to satisfy each other.

Can anybody tell me where Jordan Phillips, Xavien, Tankersly are on this defense? What about Cam Wake? Has Wake's age finally jumped the Phin? More of our high potential guys on D need to step it up. And Raekwon looks lost out there half the time.

We should have drafted a DT instead of two TEs to help stop the run. This team still has potential but somebody has to bring it out of them... Gase or someone else

I think it will be a very tough game. I've seen too many Jets/Dolphins games to think otherwise. As for Jets fans that think they will blow you out, you have plenty of Dolphin fans that think you will do the same. They point to the Jets playing a bad team and knowing the signals. The Jets fans point to the Dolphins beating a second string QB (a bad one at that) at home. I don't think we can draw a conclusion about either team based on their week one victories. That said, I do think Darnold will be a very good QB in the NFL and that is based on everything I've seen and read about him from the moment he was drafted. Who could they have drafted that you would have been sadder to see them draft? Either Allen? Mayfied? This was the best case scenario for the Jets. No brainier when he became available.

Pretty much agree with all of this. The Phins/Titans game was so weird with the delays its a little difficult to really say. The Jets had really done their homework so they were able to jump everything the Lions were doing offensively. As far as Qb's go I wasnt impressed by either Mayfield or especially Allen. In fact i was thrilled when the Bills drafted Allen, a career college completion percentage below 55% is not going to translate well to the NFL. So the best possible pick was Darnold.

I expect a tight tough game tomorrow and if either fan base is expecting a blowout they will be disappointed and mistaken. This series just does not work that way.

I agree. I traditionally don't buy into USC qb's they typically don't play well in the NFL. Carson Palmer has been an exception. Darnold seems legit. I don't buy into hype from one game though, that's just stupid and foolish and a great example of the New York hype machine is Sanchez. He took them to the AFC Championship game! More like they went despite him as they never asked him to do much and when they did lean on him he folded. Honestly I was more impressed last year in the USC UCLA game by Rosen.

Al that said Darnold was the right pick for the Jets unlike the Bills taking Allen - that guy is going to bust hard.

  40. Wow... everywhere i look that isnt a miami dolphins board, everyone picks the jets to win tomorrow. No matter what the media type that ive seen so far.... Plus no respect at all. The jets fans say we are trash and they are going to beat us 28-10, 30-17 etc etc..
That part should not be a surprise. Hopefully when miami wins this game we will finally get some respect by ESPN, youtubers, and even go as far as NFLN and more.
