Vontae Davis didn’t even wait until the end of Sunday’s Buffalo Bills loss to retire. He quit at halftime.

When the story of the 2018 Bills is written, it probably won’t be pretty, and it will include a player retiring at halftime. With the Bills losing 28-6 at halftime against the Los Angeles Chargers, Davis decided he had seen enough, according to Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander:

Good news the Bill sucks, bad news they are probably getting a top 3 pick again.

i cant even explain my feelings about this in any other way than, this guy is the biggest vagina in the NFL. Dont like the Bills, and i was a huge Vontae supporter, but you dont do this to your teammates. I hope he isnt able to find work in the NFL again. What a clown, and not someone an aspiring teenage athlete should look up to.

Even if he retires we wouldnt be able to talk to him I believe he would still be obligated to Bills contract.

Why the hell should we talk to a guy who just quit on his team at halftime? Never. No chance in hell.

He was my fav player (on D, loved me some D Bess) when he was on the phins team. The moment Ireland traded him I turned on him. Dude got 5 mill guaranteed to play 1.5 games. You think he give a duck about what ppl think or say?

It was extremely selfish & distracting to do this at halftime. He could have told one of the coaches quietly, sit out the 2nd half and then make an announcement after the game.

I don't see it that way....at least I don't see Vontae meaning it that way. He was a pretty simple-minded guy and I'm guessing that he didn't even think about how others would react or what it would look like.

Isn't that exactly what makes it selfish and distracting? Whether he meant it or not, what he did was exactly that; selfish and distracting.

Not that I'm defending Davis nor his actions, but if he mentally wasn't in the game anymore...that he had already essentially quit in his mind, wouldn't going back out on the field risk the potential for injury to himself or others?

Now I do agree with everyone he should have told the HC "Look, I'm done. I don't have it anymore. I'm benching myself and calling it a career at the end of the game", but then wouldn't that have fueled specualtion during the 2nd half...why was Davis on the bench?

It's not a good situation all around however, I don't think anything would have made this better

It is what it is . Yes many other ways this could have gone, yes it was selfish of VD
But he knew what he was going through , mentally, he did what he had to do.

I am a lot like that. He didn't mean anything bad by it. Far from it. In his mind, because he can't play at a high level, he is doing the right thing because otherwise he probably would have let the team down with a bad play or something. I think a selfish person would stay and collect a check even though they don't really deserve it. An unselfish person would leave the team if they feel they can't help the team anymore. I am probably ****ed in the head, but that's the way I see it even if it goes against the norm.

    What the heck?

I can wrap my head around maybe deciding mid-season that you want to opt out but I don't understand the idea of just giving up at half-time. To do that signals he really had zero interest going all the way back to training camp.

He really should've quit back when it was appropriate.

This isn't like Barry Sanders & the Lions. He's basically throwing himself under the bus as far as his physical ability, or lack thereof, to play the game. He must have felt like he wasn't able to do his job and getting embarrassed and didn't have the stomach to 'fight through it'.

Can anyone back that up? Was he doing bad at his job?

He's been a top-5 CB his whole career (most years, top 2) and age has finally caught up to him some. Per his words, he'd rather walk away today BEFORE putting up ugly film or getting embarrassed. While retiring at halftime is certainly nuts, I sort of admire him for it at the same time.

We are always so shocked when players do things like this, and it is certainly surprising. What we need to keep in mind is that so many of these players lack the emotional maturity to not do incredibly stupid and selfish things like this.

To be fair, calling his grandma from the locker room might not have been an option at the time (I knew I'd get a grandma joke in somewhere).

Going out there when his body is not capable and his heart is not in it is pretty stupid

I think it's pretty well documented that Vontae was never the sharpest tool in the tool shed. The guy did what he thought was right and unfortunately, it probably cost him HOF conversations down the road. He has to live his life though and that was a tough decision to make- stupid or otherwise.

Stupid is a harsh word for anyone, I think to my original point Vontae is a player who, not unlike a lot of players in the NFL who are given a job playing a game making millions right out of college, lack emotional maturity. We have unreasonable expectations of them. I do think there might also be a light or 2 off upstairs for Vontae.

I have no problem for any player deciding it's time to quit the game and save their body and possibly mind so they can enjoy life beyond their playing careers. There's a right way and time to do that. I'm not sure how anyone can argue that halftime of a game is the right time to do that. He can certainly come to that conclusion at halftime of the game. Hell, he doesn't even have to take the field if he's not mentally in it. But you don't leave and ditch your teammates creating a scene and confusion in an already bad situation.

Anyone who is defending his action here is just arguing for the sake of arguing.

Personally, I don't care how Davis left or in the manner it happened. The game owes him nothing, and vice versa. It is what it is, and no one has any right to cast judgement on preserving his personal future if he felt he wasn't physically able to perform at a high level.

Can't blame him either as Buffalo is a complete **** show at the moment.
