Well, sooner or later our "bend but don't break" defense was bound to fail...and it showed today why you can't let running backs consistently have 100+ yards games against your D. The game was there for the taking essentially the entire second half if we could just get one lousy stop. Penalties and defensive errors absolutely doomed us though. I will say this though- I thought the offense looked decent once they finally started making some strides. But then we lost Wilson, Stills took out a poor security guard and then he got hurt himself a little while later. We competed in most of the 2nd half with 2nd stringers and still managed to move the ball fairly well- Gisecki, Drake and Amendola really came through. I'm still struggling though- what's our identity on offense? I get that we have a lot of weapons but the consistency just isn't there. I mean, we ran the ball in the 4th quarter on 3rd and 10...where's the logic behind that? I thought Brock looked fairly good on the day as well and he just missed a couple of deep TD passes. It amazes me how smooth he is in the pocket and how ridiculous he looks advancing the football. I don't really have anything else to say- we played a decent game on offense but the D just wasn't up to the task this afternoon. The main thing was that we couldn't contain and it's exactly what we'll see in 4 days time....hopefully the injuries today weren't too serious.
I blame this entirely on the coaching. This team has no identity! When we’re good on offense our defense ****s the bed, when our defense is solid our offsense can’t move the ball. Our special teams is average and bring nothing special to the table. Our Head Coach seems to love to act tough and blame everyone but himself. He seems to choke when the games in the line goes back to his boring safe checkdown play calls and runs on 3-10 in the fourth down 2 scores. Gase needs to have offensive play calls removed from his power. He hired a helper who clearly isn’t helping!! It’s like Dr Jeckel and Mr Hide with this team you never know which shows up, and which side of the ball will disappoint. We have been national embarrassments on Prime time games the last few years so I’m assuming we continue that against a team we hardly ever beat. Actually not sure we ever have beaten the Texans maybe once or twice??
It’s so much easier being a Dolphins fan with 0 expectations. If and when they return to relevance, it will be a nice surprise. While this game was a disappointment, the team is playing better this year than last. I think injuries at really exposed this team. We need another good starter and some depth. Not sure how we resolve our QB situation. And yeah, we have to get better stoping the run.
Coaching is killing this team. Burke needs to go but Gase won’t pull the trigger when the season is over. This Wide 9 crap is pathetic at best and zero pass rush all game long. We’ve said it before but Gase is writing his own ticket out of here with his scared play calling in the first halves, just can’t play scared in a league that is built on scoring. Trainers? Is there something to it that we lost half our roster to injuries? Last year was no better. What kind of training regime are these guys following. Now that we lost Stills and Wilson, we’re done Thursday night and probably the next few weeks. We need a new QB, nothing new here but Thills career as a starter is over after this season. Brock played well and is a better QB than Thill but still not a difference maker. We have some nice players on defense but Burke is just killing his players with his one on one schemes. Is there another head coach out there ready for the NFL? Anyone?
It's getting old. You hate Gase. We get it. Maybe mix it up and sprinkle in some other thoughts every once in a while.
With my occasional comments in the game thread, it’s not secret where my disappointment lies today, with the defense. Today’s defense wasn’t one of those games where the offense was consistently going 3-out where they were right back out there again. No, this was one of those days where the defense couldn’t get themselves off the field. There were plenty of of 3rd and long situations where the defense couldn’t close it out and get off the field. Offensively, we can actually lay the blame on the defense. Because they couldn’t get off the field, the offense didn’t have as many opportunities to get a drive going. Prime example was the opening kickoff during the second half. Detroit took the ball and pounded it down the field, burning up half of the quarter when they scored. There have been many times where the offense hasn’t helped the defense but today the roles were definitely reversed. I’ve been patient with the defense but I truly feel Burke is in over his head. The sad thing is, the DC I wanted isn’t available. I wanted Wae Phillips but even if we were to fire Burke tomorrow, who replaces him? Sad day in Miami today, a game we really should’ve won
I said before the game that the run D has to really play well. Oh well. ...and..running it on 3r and long...twice??
Although I am disappointed in the loss I have to give credit to the Lions, they ran the ball over the Dolphins and the defensive backs played well, two areas they have been bad at for many years. They seemed as though they wanted it more.
I am going this is a case where Miami marked bad and the Lions played. Not the offense figured out how to attack Miami's defense.
You know what the biggest indictment is of Gase? We have not scored on the first possession in 17 straight games.
I think that plays into us having no identity.....we don't just come out and pound the ball or throw passes downfield. Instead, we want to study the opponent and take what they're giving us. To say that a different way though, we basically throw away the first half while Gase creates a game plan on the spot. I really thought it was more a Tannehill thing but after RT, Moore, Cutler and now Osweiler all have the same 1st quarter results, there's really no one left to blame but the coach.
Not sure Burke was going to be able to stop the lions, his players couldn’t and I don’t think it was because of scheme, they just got beat strait up.
Do you say the same thing about Pete Carroll? Even including the supposedly HOF lock Russell Wilson. Seahawks score first opening drive touchdown in 34 games https://247sports.com/nfl/seattle-s...-touchdown-34-games-Russell-Wilson-123324938/
How is that? You used 17 games without an opening drive TD as a the biggest indictment to judge the coach. I countered it using the same stat.
They've made the playoffs, won division/conference titles, and have won a chip. That's how you earn benefit of a doubt.
Pete carrol is a joke he sucked as Jets coach and he was handed a talented an and defense. Phil could have won with him. Now that he’s lost some of those hall of gamers he can’t coach
