Following all the recent games of trash defense play. It's been interesting noting what might seem to be the significant/most relevant needs is a great DC. In short, if you have to evaluate any potential DC, it would seem that the most important thing is the mind of the DC.

The knock that seems to be on Burke is that he has the tools and the work ethic and toughness but doesn't make the best decision often enough.

Of course, tools are important, but if you can have all the tools and it's still not enough, then the mind takes priority and you find you need that magical combination of both.

Now how to evaluate that? I guess you'd have to look at a big picture of the decisions being made by any prospect, and how well they read offenses. The problem is, the NFL is different to college, and how much is the coach and how much is the DC?

I'm sure none of this is new, and if it were something simple it would be easy to pick great DC's.

Still, I think it's worth pointing it out because the vast majority of DC discussions I see or hear talk about schemes or even player tools fit over the mental aspect. How much more should and can that feature in evaluations?

Here's how you evaluate MIA's next DC - Has consistently been a top DC? If the answer is no, forget it. No more "potential" guys. Get someone that has consistently done it before.

We'll have to wait and see which other coaching staffs are let go following the season. Hopefully, we can poach someone let go when another team moved on from their HC.

Proven good D coordinators are not available, that’s why you have to identify someone who’s got the potential.

Gase: Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to the new Defensive Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, Burke Matt.

Gase: Dammit, you were supposed to wear a fake mustache. Now they're gonna know it's you.

I've been saying Rex Ryan for a while. Colorful? Yes, boisterous? Yes, but as a DC....strictly a DC he would get it done. Thing is we are too worried about everyone getting along and fitting in with each other. Rex would definitely clash at times with a coach like Gase, but as long as Gase left him alone and left the defense to him we'd be fine.

I think if Adam Gase stays, Jack Del Rio is probably the guy whose name gets an underline. I'm not entirely confidant you can land him, given the circumstances, but I think you should certainly be making the attempt.

Do not let Gase hire him. If Gase hires someone it will be someone who hasn’t been a top guy. Gase doesn’t want someone who can out think him and possibly take his job.

You can’t let Gase hire a new DC unless you get rid of Gase and allow a new HC to assemble a team!

So, instead you sabotage your head coach by bringing in another coach with whom he cannot work????

Guys, anyone who's suggesting Rob Ryan, please look at his history and not his personality. He's had 12 seasons as a DC in the NFL. His defenses have rated 27th or worse in half of them, and 19th or worse in 9/12. He stayed in the league as long as he did because of his father and brother, his loudmouth persona that appeals to some people, and the fact that he had two good years out of twelve. He sucks, and his defenses finished 31st his last two years.

If Gase returns next year, then right now Del Rio would be among the guys at the top of my list also. If you strictly look at his work as a DC, then his defenses ranked 2nd, 2nd, 19th and 3rd in his four years in that role. He's also a guy who I would hope is able to accept his role in the NFL at this point, at age 55 and with two shots at being a HC in the rear view mirror.

I also don't think that its possible to get past his personality. Even at his age, with little chance of getting another HC job, I think he'd still always be gunning for another shot instead of being the best DC he can be. He's best suited to stay on TV where he can be loud and obnoxious all day and it doesn't hurt anyone.

How is Burke currently still employed? Anyone who supports keeping Gase needs to seriously think about that question.

In season DC change won't change anything. If Burke cannot correct it by season's end, then I'll expect Gase to move on from him. If Gase holds his ground and hitchs himself to the Burke post in the offseason, then the gut/rebuild so many want should be considered.

You're under the assumption that all hiring and firing decisions regarding staff lie with Gase. I'd be addressing that particular concern towards Tannenbaum, not Gase.

But just so you know, and as I've pointed out in other threads...Burke is in over his head and needs to go.

Yeah but Vance has what 1 year of coordinator experienc? Maybe it was 2 i dont remember. What I do remeber is that our D wasnt all that great with him either. We poached him as Cincinnatis DB coach made him a coordinator and he got scooped right up to be a HC as he was on the grooming path.

I'll pass. More experience please. I like the Rex Idea...but Gase jettisons any player that challenges him let alone a confrontational outspoken person with some authority over half the team. I dont know the right anwser... I just want it fixed
