People used to say that about black QB's, too. Guess what happened when black people stated being chosen to play QB? They started to become some of the best. When the mentality (wrong) is to NOT pick a player because of height, or lack thereof, you're not going to be able to prove/disprove that height really matters. I mean, how many 5'10" QB's in the modern era have been given a chance? 2? Wilson and Flutie?
Uh? we are beyond the racism that held back the black quarterback in the past. There is no short prejudice. If you can ball. You will play. Disappointed you even went there.
Lol. Never seen so many 3 and outs in the early days. Not really here to argue with people this uninformed. I watched all his games. As i live in Washington. But go ahead and educate me on r. Wilson.
No, he didn't suck. When the NFL wouldn't give him a chance he went up north and won 3-4 Championships.
He shared time with rob johnson when he played in the nfl. Cause he was so good? No fake news please.
Ohhhhhh! You lived there. I guess those of us who didn't live there couldn't watch him on any of those new fangled inventions called televisions. Yeah, what a ****ty season. That 100 passer rating (when the average that year was mid-80's) just SCREAMS STRUGGLE!! lol GTFOH with "uninformed". And there's your education....You're welcome.
It was a different game back when Flutie played with mostly pro-set style offenses. With horizontal and RPO-based offenses you see proliferating around the NFL he'd be even better now.
No he didn't. You are so uninformed. lol He actually came in and beat out Johnson. Led the Bills to the playoffs and went to the pro bowl. But he "sucked"...GTFOH with that crap You're welcome.
Correct. You said he "shared time"...no he didn't. He was new to the team, was acclimated, showed he was the better QB, won the job, and went 7-3 and on a playoff run. Please keep up.
Do you want to tell us more about how much Russell Wilson struggled? LMAO! All of us non-Washington living, no TV having people need to hear the Wilson lore of old! haha
I was a fan of flutie. As i like to root for the underdog. I was mad they weren’t letting flutie play the whole time. Again i like underdogs. Not cause I thought he was so dominating.
sigh... Flutie relieved Johnson in game #1 because Rob was stinking it up. Rob got the start in game 2, 4, and 16. (Flutie was injured) Then in 1999 he led the Bills to a 10-5 record (Johnson played 1 game. Last game of the season.) Then in 2000 Wade Phillips decided to split time between the 2. Johnsons went 4-7. Flutie went 4-1.
I think the caches could easily do it- you trade away Drake, Howard, Wilson, Grant, Stills, Parker, Wake, Kiko, Tannehill, etc. Clear the board of ready-today talent and continue the youth movement. It would actually be fairly easy if you started trading and loading up on 2020 picks.
I'd love to have R Wilson on this team. Being an NC State guy, all I've done is watch that guy win. Yeah, there are some throws he can't make and he has a few "WTF was Russ thinking?" moments but he more than makes up for it in other areas.
You obviously missed one of the greatest football games of all time. Flutie is a folk hero/super-villain in Miami and I'll never forget that Orange Bowl game. I was just a kid can can still vividly remember those closing minutes of the 4th quarter.
Well.. as others have said, not sure how you can say much negative about Russell Wilson. Statistically, his career z-score passer rating is 1.1217 (standard deviations above the mean), and keep in mind a +1 standard deviation is the average level needed for an offense and QB in any given year to win the SB. Playing at that high a level for a career, at least so far, is pretty amazing. Flutie on the other hand has a z-score of -0.1344 which is slightly below average. Tannehill is almost exactly average. So if you think Tannehill isn't good, Flutie was statistically worse using only passer rating. And taking defense into account pulls both of them down, Wilson more of course. Wilson takes about a -0.4 hit while Flutie takes about a -0.1 hit (Tannehill takes no hit adjusting by defense), but then if you added QB rushing it would pull them up a bit. Point is.. Wilson is elite and a near certainty to get into the HoF while Flutie was statistically no better than Tannehill and arguably worse, though Flutie's best was possibly better than Tannehill's best.
I remember that as a young teen. How many times did many of us just go to the park with our friends and just chunked the ball in the air and yelled "Flutie!"?
It might be a little early for this, but Daniel Jones of Duke just announced he's going pro. He's projected to be middle first round. 6-5, 220, good arm.
Okay, please don't compare being black to being under 5'10 One is a physical limitation which presents a legitimate concern and one has no bearing on anything. If you arent sure which is which....well....good luck.
They are both biases that can negatively affect evaluation. Perhaps being short is a major detriment, but there are successful short QBs, and if a QB is short in college but able to succeed, then his success or failure in the pros is unlikely to be due to height.
A few points: 1) Success being short in college means nothing in the pros. It's like saying your lack of arm strength was fine in college so it won't hurt in the NFL. We know that is false. The degree it matters may be debatable but it does matter. 2) I'm not saying it's a deficiency that some people can't overcome. What Wilson has done with no height is similar to what Pennington did with no arm. It's impressive, but not common. 3) It's not a bias, it's a fact that it is a limitation in a LOT of ways. While the example of being black is 100% bias based on racism rather than physical ability.
Alright guys - what do you reckon - I have to say that assuming he comes back from injury alright next year, I'm on-board with targeting to pick him:
There will be a good and deep 2020 class even beyond those 2 barring injury or drastic fall offs. I dont think we need to "Intetionally" suck - just play our game and make smart choices. If we dont go hard for someone this year, then loading up on assets is a good maneuver. The other thing is that with some big and relatively successful recent QB hauls, need is not quite so huge. We are - this year - really only looking at the Giants (which may still be bullish on Eli) and Jags (lots of money wrapped into Bortles). Despite the lack of depth at QB talent, it may not be a bad year to strike if we really like Jones, Haskins or Murray (assuming the latter 2 declare).
