lol these aren't hires. Let's wait and see what happens. Might be awhile with many candidates still in the playoffs.
Of those names, Munchak is the only one not in the playoffs. Those seem to be the early look at the playoff names. Would love to see if he is making moves for John Harbaugh.
Munchak would be a depressing hire. The rest I would be cautiously optimistic to fine with. A college guy and a dude who should donate his entire paycheck to Watson?
He makes sense for Cleveland and Arizona. Maybe the Jets. Teams in need of a stabilizing presence and a QB developer. I doubt he is on our radar, nor do I think we are on his.
Im comfortable with the fact that its depressing. Because the past 21 years all we have done is interview the sexy list and it has never worked out. Maybe we will finally get a real coach this time then. Enough with the sexy lists.
It's the first four people he can arrange to interview so far. I wouldn't put any stock into which names come out until we have some sort of final list or short list.
Reverting the Ravens to a ground control and clock chewing beast probably didn't hurt. He can't make a career on it, but I'm not going to bet against his passer ability gaining ground next year either.
If you look at the position Grier has been put in, in a sense it is ideal. He is not attached to a coach and Ross has handed him the keys to the kingdom. This is the position that guys have dreamed about. Even Joe Six-Pack could tell you the first guy that they would call if they were put in charge of a team. I imagine that there will be more names to come, but do not be fooled, the first guys he calls are an insight to what Grier is thinking.
I hope Grier takes his time and does a thorough job on the head coach search. If it takes until February, so be it, as long as he does his due diligence, and not bring along one of his cronies. The one thing that concerns me with today's press conference, they are expecting a full re-build, which can be brutal for fans, I hope if this it the case they will be competitive while doing so.
I think it is important not to rush but I think he should move fairly quickly. I am not sure exactly how it works, but I think that the HC we do hire is competing for staff with the other HCs. If we take too long, the good DC's, etc. may already have a job. If I am mistaking, anyone, please feel free to correct me.
Very true statement, I wasn't thinking about the rest of the staff so to speak, want to ensure that we get the right head coach first.
Man I watched that game in amazement how the interior of that line worked. While all of us were told over and over that the guards weren't important enough to pour resources in. We saw the different Sitton made when healthy, and you see an offensive line like the Colts and just get so damn jealous.....
He was a D-Coordinator in Seattle. He expertise would certainly play to our strengths. It would be a huge plus if he could wrangle Marinelli to come with him as D-coordinator. Dallas and Seattle were built the right way. I think this is a solid interview.
I agree. It can be easy in this market to rush to a decision because there are so many teams looking as well. Can't do that. Good coaches are out there. It may not be the ones everyone is quick to hire.
I didn't think he was the actual DC though. Marinelli would be an A+ hire for the DC job though. However, it would be a lateral move and the Cowboys would be unlikely to let him go. Edit: You are correct. That makes it a bit more logical. What I really like is his sustained success across two organizations, and ability to develop talent. I think he could be a huge plus for X and Minkah among others. I would also be curious to see if he prefers a heavy ground oriented game after working with Dallas.
I don't really want Jim Harbaugh, I want John, but that doesn't look like it's going to be an option and it's already slim pickings so any new hire will likely be a shot in the dark... I want a coach that's balanced and understands both sides of the ball well so he can input the best Coordinators for both sides of the ball. Most importantly, I want a coach not a coordinator. That doesn't mean they can't be a former coordinator. Just make sure you find a guy with the right mind frame. Dolphins always go for the softest coordinators to hire for HC it's pathetic. Cam Cameron, Joe Philbin, talk about spineless.
Vic Fangio and Eric Bieniemy highlight the list by a country mile for me personally. It's GOT to be one those two guys. I'm about 55-45 on this....55 being Fangio and 45 being Bieniemy. Which do you prefer? An improved dynamic defense that can stop any team in the league led by a grizzled 60 year old throw back badass mob boss? Or a potentially explosive offense led by an up and comer in Eric B? The ONLY reason why I favor Fangio over Bieniemy is because we do not have a quarterback at this moment unless *sigh* Tannehill comes back. I'm no GM, just a fan, but I would do my best to make sure one of those guys are leading our team next season. Bieniemy would turn a guy like Drake into a superstar while Fangio (whose personality is desperately what we need) would turn our defense into a scary monster.
MY only concern with Bieniemy is that we could be making the same mistake three times in a row. When Philbin was with Rogers, we all knew the explosive offense was heading to Miami. When Gase was with Manning, we all knew the explosive offense was heading to Miami. Now Bienemy is with Mahomes, and we all know the explosive offense is heading to Miami. I do think it is slightly different because Andy Reid develops solid coaches, but this is something to be careful of. I think Fangio is far more likely to replicate the defensive success he has had over the course of his career in Miami.
don't tell jimmy johnson that college isn't real coaching. you might want to stop while you are ahead........
I have no idea obviously. I can throw out generic names like the recently fired Koetter, but I think if you wanted an idea you could research his connections to offensive guys from the Seahawk/Cowboy organizations or guys who are known to either Carroll or Garrett. After the assistant fiasco of the Gase era, it's an important hire for Grier to evaluate, which is the other wild card - will he bring in or at least recommend people he is familiar with? One thing that may match is Grier wanting to go to a Parcellian tough guy, tough team mantra. I think pretty much all lined up interviewees have ties to strong running attacks and organizations that prize guys who love to play football and hit people. I think with Bienemy, you look at his success with the running attack and developing both a superstar (shame he is apparently a douche) and a deep stable of backs who are all very well rounded - catching, blocking and ofc running. Add in the general success of the Reid tree and how his line appears to have been taught to teach and I think you have a big difference. I would also add that as great a year as Mahomes had, and as talented as he is (I love the kid, ketchup and all) he is a first year starter rather than the established generational talents that were A-Aron and Peyton. Show me where the words "real coaching" appear in my statement please?
I think the coordinator question is a really important question. I don't think that these guys will just say a generic name like Koetter. These candidates are going to/should select someone they have worked with or at least know on a personal level. Creating synergy and getting everyone on the same page is instrumental. Head coaching jobs are a once in a lifetime opportunity; many will not get a second chance. I think you gotta pick someone that you are comfortable with. I could not imagine that one of these guys would just look at someone and say, "I really don't know the guy, but it sure looks like they can run an offense." I do think personalities matter. This is one of the things that makes me nervous about younger coaches. They obviously have a shorter resume and ergo they have a smaller pool of guys that they are comfortable working with.
Yeah that's why Grier might have a say in it - he's got some pretty deep roots and they can branch out through the whole Parcells tree. That said, some guys like Bowles, Joseph and Koetter will get snapped up. They were successful coordinators and likely will be solid hires. I would expect that they will be hired, however, by people who have either worked with them before or have a direct connection to them. Overall, while it IS an important question, I don't really think it's one that we as fans have a good shot at accurately answering.
My short list: T-1. Jim Harbaugh / John Harbaugh 2. Lincoln Riley 3. David Shaw 4. Vic Fangio T-5. Bruce Arians / Mike Shula Beyond that, I'm not interested in other prospects right now. It's a long process though; a lot can change and a different coach may very well catch my eye. I still think the Jets' interest in Jim Harbaugh is real and they will pursue him; between that and the Michigan fanbase growing increasingly restless, I think he will be prepared to accept their deal until Ross comes in and offers him something better. I just don't see anybody else coaching the Dolphins in 2019. My two cents. Did some research on who other teams are interviewing + what the rumors are saying, and if all hold true (not going to happen), this is what the coaching carousel would look like: Cleveland Browns: Fire - Hue Jackson Hire - Adam Gase New York Jets: Fire - Todd Bowles Hire - Dave Toub Denver Broncos: Fire - Vance Joseph Hire - Chuck Pagano Cincinnati Bengals: Fire - Marvin Lewis Hire - Darrin Simmons Green Bay Packers: Fire - Mike McCarthy Hire - Josh McDaniels Arizona Cardinals: Fire - Steve Wilks Hire - Mike McCarthy Tampa Bay Bucanneers: Fire - Dirk Koetter Hire - Bruce Arians
I feel like people are swapping rebuild with gut the roster and tank. For good reason too, we assume that to rebuild something the original has to be torn down. To some degree it's true, but it doesn't mean you throw away the good things. Guys like Howard, Tunsil, Minkah, James, Wilson, Grant, Drake should all be relatively safe. Not to say they all make it, but they all have value to ANY coaching regime taking over. The next staff will actually be starting with talent. The question will be how they handle the QB situation and fill in the gaps.
Excuse my ignorance, but do HC candidates reveal key members of their staff when they interview or do they keep things close to the vest?
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...rview-darren-rizzi-for-head-coaching-vacancy/ I would be fine with this. Thoughts?
