You think that would hold them off interviewing other candidates? We need to have a backup plan because the Ravens are going to want Grier's left nut. I hope he's had his kids already. ;-)

Losing him. I’m not in the majority but I think we need brand new coaches all around. He can stay as special teams coach if the new head coach wants or maybe be promoted but I want a proven head coach with a defensive coordinator who is proven! Maybe he could be OC I dunno

I heard about the Harbaugh rumors....That sucks because I believe Baltimore would have just fired his *** had they missed the playoffs, but here we are. Gonna give up a first round pick and probably a second round pick for the guy. I might be in the minority here, but i'd much rather try to acquire more talent as opposed to trading for a head coach. John Gruden is of course having a massive impact on the Raiders football team. You see how dominant they were this year with him leading the way.

I just vehemently disagree with the idea of "trading" for a head coach unless it was Bill Belicheck. I really hope Ross/Grier/whoever isn't that stupid. It could also be the fact that I really really despise the Baltimore Ravens for some reason. It's really a tight race between Dallas, New England, The Jets, and The Ravens are as far as teams I really just can't stand. I guess it's probably because we haven't beaten them in this century, but still....Baltimore or not, Harbaugh, whatever, I think it is an absolutely horrible idea to try and trade for a head coach. Why not just try and lure Jim Harbaugh instead? We won't have to compensate Michigan if that's the case.

I live in Baltimore, trust me the fans are as lower white trash as it gets. They make Philadelphia fans look like they are Harvard graduates. I so want the Colts to win. Just so I can see how bitter these *******s get here.

I wouldn't be willing to give up more than a 3rd or future 2nd for a coach. A first just goes against the entire premise of the rebuild.

Unless you believe your QB isn't here, trade this years first, tank and build. Im on record as hating tanking though, so no thanks.

He's got one lined up with the Browns. I'd like for us to take a look as well. Dude has a done a great job with that Indy defense, taking a talent void and coaching up guys and then getting his youth to perform at a high level. That's the kind of stuff that interests me in a coach. Not just getting a unit to play a high level, but turning around a sub-par unit, getting guys to overperform and getting the young players to develop and fast. Eberflus did all that this year.

In general, or specifically? I outlined a bit of reasoning above. A person who can make an aspect of a team elite. A person who shows a propensity for developing talent and getting the most of out players through both scheme and leadership. Someone who shows adaptability and attention to detail.

Does it guarantee success? No, because literally nothing does. But it gives a fair shot at hiring someone who can be a solid and respectable coach for years.

Either specifically about a given guy or generally.

I guess for me, it is more than just "doesn't guarantee" a guy will be a great HC, I'm not sure it correlates well at all.

I think it is a factor but not a great or significant factor to coach an elite unit. Well let me rephrase that, i think it is but one check mark. It is far from the only or main qualifier and I believe if that is the basis for the interview or wanting a guy, it is a mistake.

For example, what if the particular unit is devoid of talent, like 32nd in the league bad talent-wise, but the coach gets them to play middle of the pack? Isn't that more impressive than a coach with a talent stacked unit getting his guys to play at elite level?

Generally these guys have been coaching their entire adult lives. While being a hot name obviously doesn't mean success, it generally indicates you've been successful in the positions you've been placed in and have respect around the league.

Not being a hot name doesn't mean you will fail either obviously.

Last night I had a dream that Mark Richt got the job and was bringing in Malik Rosier at QB. In my dream, I came on here and everyone was giddy for it saying how great it was and I was 'WTF?? This isn't great, it's a disaster. What is wrong with people..?'

Last time I have cheese late at night, LOL!

It really felt strange that Harbaugh didn't start Flacco in the second half, at least after the first Ravens series on offense went nowhere. They needed a spark, besides the one at the end when the Chargers started playing soft defense.

The conspiracy part of my brain says that Harbaugh wanted a quick exit to look at other head coaching opportunities. I think Baltimore will let him go for second rounder rather than let him coach as a lame duck with the team knowing he is gone at the end of the season. You can't run a team like that if you want to compete.

If anyone is showing interest in Jim the ravens will of course keep quiet and try to get something for him. I don’t believe they want him to stay but I don’t think they want to not get something if they can on the way out!

Last week, I listed my top coaching candidates in this thread. I also mentioned that it's a long process, and someone may catch my eye along the way. Two have done that already, and I'm all in on them.

    Updated short list:
T-1. Kris Richard (previously unranked) / Darren Rizzi (previously unranked)
    T-2. Jim Harbaugh (previously T-No. 1) / John Harbaugh (previously T-No. 1)
    3. Lincoln Riley (previously No. 2)
    4. David Shaw (previously No. 3)
    5. Vic Fangio (previously No. 4)

It's a close contest between Richard and Rizzi, each having received glowing endorsements from players and coaches alike. I believe both have what it takes to make it as a head coach in NFL, but currently, I feel that it comes down to whichever would be able to surround himself with better coordinators. Would be more than happy with either of those two.

Something to chew on: if Rizzi is passed up for the HC job, do you think he stays in Miami? Hard to see him as the assistant to the guy who leapfrogged him.

"the Dolphins instead seem focused on five candidates: Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Patriots de facto defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, Cowboys defensive backs coach Kris Richard and Darren Rizzi, who has run Miami’s special teams since 2010.

Rizzi will meet with Stephen Ross and Chris Grier at some point this week. And then, expect an offer to be made to someone, either formally or informally."

He apparently interviewed with the Jets and Bucs too...

    From the Phins official site:

    https://www.miamidolphins.com/news/top-5-facts-head-coach-candidate-kris-richard

5 Things to Know About … Kris Richard, who the Dolphins interviewed for their head-coaching position.

    1) Richard is in his first season as defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys after spending the previous eight seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, including three (2015-17) as defensive coordinator.

    2) As assistant defensive backs coach in 2010, cornerbacks coach in 2011 and DB coach from 2012-14, Richard was responsible for the development of the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” secondary of Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Brandon Browner and Byron Maxwell that helped the team appear in back-to-back Super Bowls.

    3) In Richard’s first season as defensive coordinator, Seattle ranked first in the NFL for fewest points allowed.

    4) After playing cornerback for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll at USC, Richard was drafted by Seattle in the third round of the 2002 draft. After playing three seasons for Seattle, Richard was traded to the Dolphins for defensive end Ronald Flemons but never appeared in a regular season game for Miami. His final NFL game came with the San Francisco 49ers late in the 2005 season.

    5) Richard, 39, was born in Carson, California.

I suppose one big potential benefit of Richard would be if he could end Miami's missed tackle/tackling problems.

Evidently he was part of Seattle's effort to transform the way they tackled, and the secondary defense.

Picked a few things on him from around the web:

"Now, of course, this isn't revolutionary, having been borrowed from rugby and older school football sans helmets, but I do find it fascinating how Carroll still dedicates time to individual drilling, particularly in the current CBA structure, which severely limits practice time (relatively).

It comes down to Seattle's belief in developing their players to play their system and become a product of their program. They're literally indoctrinating their players with Carroll's established system.

Seahawks DBs coach Kris Richard is highly respected by his players and works in tandem with Passing Game Coordinator Rocky Seto to get Seattle's corners programmed to how they want them to play.

Said Carroll recently, when asked how the Hawks have turned mid- to late-round defensive backs into contributors:

Kris Richard and Rocky Seto have done a fantastic job of training them. They're really, really, strict, and if you guys could appreciate it, they (the corners) all look the same, somewhat.

The way they step, the way they challenge at the line of scrimmage, the way they finish in the things that we teach.

This is a long, long process, to get these guys to where they are. But, now they're in the system, and it doesn't matter who steps in and plays. It's impressive.

So, it's a process, but it's kind of a systems thing for us." ARTICLE LINK

"The Seattle Seahawks will have to bounce back quickly after their demoralizing loss to the Los Angeles Rams. What might be the most surprising stat line of the 42-7 beat down is quarterback Jared Goff’s 120 yards passing.

Rams running back Todd Gurley did the bulk of the work, rushing for 152 yards and three touchdowns with a whopping 7.2 yards per carry. The Seahawks wounded defense was able to contain the dangerous Goff for the most part but greatly struggled in tackling Gurley.

Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard was asked on Thursday if the Cowboys have a similar rushing attack to the Rams.

“They’re just really good,” Richard said. “Their good running backs, they have good size, good vision, and really good speed. They have the ability to break tackles and they have home run speed, so it’s about tackling. That’s what it comes down to; just sound, fundamental tackling.”

It is easier for teams to preach fundamental tackling early in the year with ample time and full contact drills. As the season progresses, however, some of the fundamentals can slip and practicing proper tackling becomes more of a challenge.

“Well, it’s practice,” Richard said. “We have to drill them; there’s no doubt about it. Really, that’s where our focus has been, is just going right back to basics and get back to our fundamentals and get back to drilling it, and just get back to doing right.”

Richard also talked about incorporating tackling dummies into practice to aid proper form.

“The best possible way that we can,” Richard said. “Right now, since no pads and things of that nature and with this time of year, it’s happened before and we fully expect how to practice at this point in time. The dummies and things of that nature are vital.”" ARTICLE LINK

Richards worn out all his energy in dallas lol. (see the two videos above) but he wont have that ability to be 1:1 as a head coach so even if he was a good coordinator that doesn't mean anything for a HC> Except maybe he brings a SPARK to the coaches and the entire team has a fire and some mojo.

I kinda like his attitude it's infectious!

Why they didnt interview Vic is beyond me. So much for the scorch the earth looking at all candidates huh?

I like that he is about, the energy, the caring, and the love. I can say Rizzi is about the same things. That is why the guys like him. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

If we do go with Richard, then Grier is going to have to bring is some longer CBs to fit his system.
