Well, from 2012 until 2014, 3 seasons, we can take away his injury...

And guess what, he wasn't the best or anywhere near the best.

Over the past 10-11 games has played consistently elite. Let's see if he keeps it up.

I agree with this. A better coach and Qb would have had this team in the playoffs...even with all the injuries.

It's actually funny. It was heavily in favor of "No Chance!" until a bunch of posters started criticizing the wording of the poll (and technically the correct answer is "Absolutely!"). Then it started to become more balanced. This thread is useful but I wouldn't take the poll as indicative of much. I think most posters are actually fairly realistic about how difficult it is to get a franchise QB. Where you see disagreement is how good/bad Tannehill really is (not sure if we'll ever see near unanimity on that issue).

Wasnt that his 1st three years in the league. His team was 3-13 before he joined. You have to give a rook a pass in the beginning? Then the injury crap?
    I guess we will see?

But what if the benefit of passing on the Hellmans, is your wife says to hell with the egg salad, let’s hold off on lunch and instead wait for dinner where we will have a 6oz Waygu steak followed by a threesome with the neighbor girl.

    See what I mean.

What's the 2019 goal....that really determines whether we're talking insanity or sound logic. Folks talking about "Tank for Tua" may like the idea in theory, but that doesn't mean the front office is considering it even for a second. And even then, you have other "winning" problems to deal with- are we trading Drake, Fitz, Howard, Wilson, Tunsil, etc? You set the franchise back 5 years by doing that (like trading Long, Davis, etc....your insanity route that we just completed 10 years ago with no gains.)

Tannehill + our line, skill players and defense = +/- 8 wins. With Oz, maybe that falls to +/-6 or 7. With our young QB's, who knows....it could be anywhere on the spectrum. But again, what is the end goal for kickoff in 2020? Shore up the offensive line? Okay, now RT would be a +/- 10 win QB while the other QB's don't necessarily change.

Saying fire the coach and QB is not a strategy. And if you don't want to go the insanity route, then it's about time that we create an actual two-year strategy to stop this madness.

LMAO, I read that four times and tried to imagine what you mean, but all I walked away with was, "Which neighbor girl are we talking about?" I'm not sure that correlates to a football analogy.

I'd ask Grier if there's a QB he really wants in 2019. If yes you sell the farm to get him. If no, then you trade out of the 1st (or at least way down) to get sufficient ammunition to sell the farm in 2020. Ross has to assure any prospective coach that IF we go this second route he'll only be judged from year 2 onwards. But if we go the first route you judge him from 2019.

Reduced to searching the forum for your screen name? Nah it's my day off and I'm pretty porn'd out so I got time on my hands, also I graduated the 3rd grade so using the search feature really isn't time consuming. I knew you, just like most of all the Tannehill cult followers were a hypocrite so I already knew what I was looking for.

Pre 2016 all of you would wag your fingers at anyone that dare bring up a QB's record and pound your chest TEAM RECORD! Predictably after the 2016 season most of you brought up his 7-1 finish and if you didn't bring it up you sure didn't care to correct your fellow cult members and remind them that the 7-1 was a TEAM record. Then at the beginning of this season you guys clung to Tannehill is 10-1 in the last 11 games! and again even if you didn't you sure didn't correct your cult members that 10-1 was a TEAM record.

Funny how I mentioned Luck leading the Colts to a 33-15 record his 3 years and there you were to chime in TEAM record. Yet in the threads I quoted, you failed to chime in with the same vigor. You're about as predictable as an Adam Gase offense. There is absolutely no difference between me saying with Luck under center the Colts went 33-15 his 1st 3 years and you spouting off Brady's record oops I mean the Patriots record vs the AFC east. When does the record belong to the team and when can it be used when discussing a QB? Only against division rivals? Only when discussing the last 11 games a QB has played? Only when you deem it so?

Here let me help be less hypocritical and more consistent with the TEAM record approach,

I think that's a sound plan IF IF IF they'll actually stick to it (on the trade down and sell the farm route). That's easier said than done though when the team is losing. It would honestly be my preferred route.

Question though- most of us watched the national championship game last night. The kid phenom is going to be the NFL class of 2021 or 2022. Would we be better "selling the farm" next season instead? He's the best prospect I've seen in a very long time.

2022 is 3 years after 2019. You have time to evaluate a QB in that frame. I wouldn't try to "time" things too much either. Not just because it's hard to predict which prospects will really pan out, but also because it's hard to predict where we'll be. I mean suppose we are actually a decent team sans QB at that time? How the hell could we grab the QB we want with so many other teams weaker than us.

So yeah 2020 looks better than 2019 in terms of prospects, but the further things are out in the future the larger the uncertainty. I'd just stick with what I wrote. And yes you need discipline for that.

I couldn't stand Tannehill for years...and got lots of crap over it. Yet I finally came around in 2016 by saying, "Hey, this guy has kinda grown on me a little." Now I get lots of crap over saying he's not as terrible as everyone makes him out to be.

Note...I've never defended the guy or heavily trashed him...I've mainly been Swwitzerland on the whole ordeal besides saying I preferred Matt Moore. And that just pissed people off even more I think.

The moral of this story- if you log into this site, you're getting crap regardless of your opinion. If I say the sky is blue, some nut case will swear it's purple. Another will insist it's green. That's just life at ThePhins.com.

Three failed regimes. Two knee injuries. A bum shoulder. No accolades to cling to. Time to let go.

Tannehill is now firmly established with the word "mediocrity", which in the sports world has become just about the worse thing a franchise can be these days. He's a remnant of three coaching fails, of which nobody could repair. What you say in theory makes sense, but less so from a directional standpoint because he has no future with this franchise. He would serve as nothing more than a distraction. This is being told to you by the people that run the show.

Yeah, the perfect symmetry of the voting was just too perfect, haha.

I think if we went with a stop-gap like Bridgewater (or maybe even Foles!?) we'd probably get better production in certain areas, like maybe 3rd down conversion rate, for instance. Whereas we'd probably see more up/down performances.

One thing Tannehill was really good at was never losing you the game with INTs. He rarely, if ever, threw 3 picks in a game for instance. I think you'd probably have a couple real crap outtings if you had Bridgewater for instance. Just my gut.

But man, I am so done watching Tannehill do the same stuff week-in, week-out. The 3rd option needs to be "Don't care, just find me someone else."

That's not true (at least so far)...the folks who run the show have only said "he's still on the roster for now." Side note- that must absolutely suck being in that position as an athlete.....you feel like you're probably fired yet you can't even apply for a new job yet. All he can do is sit there for six months while waiting for the axe to drop.

You're not being completely objective though- Tannehill won 10 of 11 (2016 and 2018) before hurting the shoulder. Some called him the "hottest QB in the league" as recently as November when he came back and put up excellent numbers. Heck, even cBrad was second guessing his opinion for a few weeks since the numbers said there was growth there.

Your opinion of "mediocrity" is based on three or four games finishing up the season. And just so you know, I do agree with you. But a lot of folks will look and see a red-hot QB rehabing a shoulder with crap protection and nobody to throw to and say, "They're idiots for not starting him." Again, that's not my opinion....I'm still Switzerland on this matter since I clearly see both sides of the argument.

One more ting to consider- we all ranted when Tannehill wasn't allowed to try and beat Indy a few weeks back. That game changed the entire season for us and it all went downhill afterwards. You might even say we fired Gase for that performance and not trusting his QB...is it right to then fire the QB if you believe the coach had to go? I don't follow that logic.

Again, I'm not disagreeing with you....just playing devil's advocate on both sides as I have for 7 years now. The bottom line is that if you protect Tannehill, he'll give you a top-5 performance. If you let him get constant pressure, you're getting a bottom-5 performance. That's not going to change and he is what he is.....but you can definitely win with him TODAY if you invest in a line.

Yup, I had "better or worse" in the title and meant to just add "better" to the poll, then I just sort of hid in a corner for a few days when I realized I screwed up without the ability to edit. It is still helpful though since we got to argue about RT a little and set the expectation that the next guy won't likely be Joe Namath. That was the entire goal to begin with so I succeeded while failing. =)

The 2016 Dolphins and Ryan Tannehill were benefactors of a soft-schedule that featured a dominant running attack led by Jay Ajayi. The teams they faced were 50-77 with a 39% win percentage. We can continue to adjust how we view his career and only concentrate on pockets of good play if we like - but realists understand it's an exercise in futility. When the games matter and the bullets are blazing - he can't be counted on, especially on the road.

You're bringing up this "Top 5" element, but watching the games it (especially this year) it became clear Gase managed him to those numbers. I mean look at his attempts and average yards/game this year. Again, when you combine the need to overhaul the roster and the need to rid itself of remnants of mediocrity - it's pretty clear he won't be back and shouldn't be back. They're not going to show their cards and admit he's on the way out, which is normal when trying to get at least a shred of compensation.

I was comparing 2016 thru 2018....it just so happened that he missed a ton of games in-between.

For the "top 5" stuff, he had- a perfect rating this year against the Pats and Raiders, a 123 against the Jets and a 119 vs the Colts. Those are all "top 5" performances in 4 of 11 games. In 2016, he hit that mark in 3 of the last 5 games as well. So over his last full season of 16 games, he's bee a top 5 QB in 7 of 16 outings.

Maybe you're 100% right and those numbers are all Gase. But if your QB can deliver top 5 results across half the season, what's there to really complain about if you're winning and the success is attributed to the coach? (obviously the other 9 games, LOL)

Once again, I feel like I have to keep reminding you that I'm not a Ryan Tannehill fan and I don't want him starting in 2019. The only reason I spoke up is because I can't stand when the narrative is incorrect- he has not been mediocre for the past few years. He's either been fantastic or complete dog ****...with a few mediocre games sprinkled in. That's my one and only point.

Tannehill from 2012-2018 is has the 10th most 3 INT games in the NFL and considering he missed parts of 2016, all of 2017, and parts on 2018...thats saying something.

This is a pretty worthless stat dude and cherry picking at it's finest.

For example, RT and Luck have missed about the same amount of games during this same period. Guess who has more 3 INT games out of those two? ;)

Guess who has a higher INT % in those games.

Although, Luck is much better at throwing TD's..5.2 vs 4.2 TD%

It's very odd that Luck has a lower INT % than Tannehill albeit not by much. If someone would have asked me who throws INT's at a higher clip between the 2 I woulda said Luck without hesitation. Considering how conservative our offense has been with Philbin and Gase and their affinity for dink and dunk.

That's what happens when bias creeps into a person.

For example, Luck and RT are not really any different in regards to "dink and dunk". Luck's career Y/A is 7.2 while RT's is 7.0.
