Things we already knew and 3 prior regimes tried to mold. It's not the talents he has, it's the ones he doesn't have. Let's not forgot over 30 and coming off two ACL recoveries and a bum shoulder.

Personally I don't think the Flores regime has the stones to even attempt a season with Tannehill and risk the blowback that would ensue if they snagged their season on another middling or below average performance like their predecessors did. It's career suicide.

This is much about PR as it is about record and this was the same QB who was loudly boo'd out there with the offense numerous times.

He serves no purpose as a holdover if they plan to draft someone. He'd be a distraction, especially if he regurgitated one of those "mirage" games where everyone goes "See! Look at that talent!".

This regime's approach should be "New QB - who dis?"

    Wait ...... como?

That tweet btw, doesn't even contain the whole comment by O'Shea where it's clearly spelled out what's been lacking at the QB position. "O’Shea did say that “intangibles are most important to us” when it comes to quarterbacks. He called the quarterback the “ambassador” of the team and said he’s looking for leadership and work ethic in whoever will be running his offense."

Tannebot is the golly gee, shucks guy. I once compared him to Rube Baker in "Major League 2" in that regard.

Your point was that that problem with Tannehill is that talent he doesn't have. I was stating that for a holdover QB a partial lack of talent is irrelevant.

Ditching him to avoid continuity issues is fine. But that's got nothing to do with talent.

My bad ..... allow me to correct myself to make this easier - "A problem with". Better? And the whole reason behind my post was to point out the short-sightedness of that tweet.

Alas, yes talent would be a reason he's jettisoned .... the one that's lacking between the ears. And anyone beginning to suggest he has the same physical talents at his age after numerous health issues the last 2.5 seasons is dishonest.

    Not really.
If a holdover QB is just someone to play the spot while you find your permanent solution (and especially if you're tanking) then talent (physically or mentally) isn't an issue, unless you're after a really horrible QB. If that's the case then an injured an under-performing Tannehill is even better.

By all accounts it seems that Tannehill's days in Miami are over. However, if for some reason the team do keep him on as the starter for one more year because they want to draft a QB in 2020 and/or not suffer any cap space issues, or even in the hopes that a decent year from him will increase his trade value, then what does it matter? If he's going to be gone, he's going to be gone. Over. Done with. Finished. Tannehill's faults or lack of talent simply aren't relevant any more. We're not keeping him. So one year more with him to tank or as a holdover won't make any difference... unless you're thinking of two scenarios:

1- They aim to try to win this coming year and so you need a better QB.
2- The aim is to tank completely and Tannehill is too good for that.

Unless you're thinking of one of those Tannehill's talent isn't an issue.

They will brag about tannehill to get someone to trade for him? If teams think we don’t want tannehill. Then they won’t give us anything for him. Build him up like you want to use him. Maybe you get a good trade?

Given that we know the Dolphins aren't going to go all in with a futile attempt to make the playoffs in 2019 (thankfully!), there are basically three reasons to cut or trade Tannehill.

    1) The team wants to start completely fresh with the new coaching staff with zero holdovers at QB, and totally build from the ground up. Thats totally fair and reasonable.

    2) As Galant said, the team thinks that a healthy Tannehill, with better coaching, will actually be too good, leading the team to too many hollow victories, and pushing down the 2020 first round draft pick. This is also totally fair and reasonable.

    3) Tannehill will never again be totally healthy and/or regain the form that he had in 2016 and earlier. Could be. He's 30 years old, and now more than two years removed from the original injury. If he's not better now, he might never be. The team's doctors have the best idea of that, but they aren't going to share it with the world right now.

But the idea that the team would get a short term upgrade in 2019 over a healthy Tannehill is highly unlikely.

Say the AC in my house kept breaking down. Let's say it worked half the time I used it.

For ease of math, let's say it cost $500 to fix it every time. But let's also say the fix was essentially band aiding the problem and I really needed a new AC. So again, just to make it easy, a new AC cost $3000.

So, I want a new AC system, but I cannot afford it because every time I build up some savings, the AC breaks and I fix it so it will run at least half the time.

There's two options available to me:

    1. I finally say, to hell with it, and decide I need to save the money to get a new AC and if it breaks until i get the money saved, i won't pay to get it back to 50% working.

    2. There's an AC service place holding a contest for most broken AC. The winner gets a new AC. So I can purposely destroy my AC for chance to win.

One of those is tanking to solve a problem, the other is allocating resources to solve a problem. They are not the same.

The Miami Dolphins ownership group has been nothing but patient and rewarding to Tannehill for his 7 years here. At the very least they deserve compensation if they can get it. So, they're going to talk him up - this is common sense here. Wouldn't shock me to see him renegotiate his deal in order to facilitate a trade somewhere he could start.

I'm shocked there wasn't discussion with Denver tbh.

You're taking the "talent" conversation in a direction that was never intended. But by all means .......

The response I'm getting from you is very lowkey pro-Tanny. It's like "I'm not saying, but I'm saying" mentality. Again, this man was boo'd out there with the offense. Barring an absolute miracle turnaround - do you really think the fanbase that shows up to those games wants to see him out there? I don't.

From a PR perspective it puts a stench on the clean slate, which is what the Flores regime is supposed to represent. After three failed regimes with this kid, it's time people stop fooling themselves ...... even for just ***Nixon voice*** "1 more year" and some wins that ultimately won't impact the future of this team because their future is in either this draft or the next one.

Mind you if they get a guy like Murray this year they're not sitting him. They didn't sit Tanny either. They'll port over the kinds of things Murray did in college in order to transition him easier or any other QB for that matter. That's the new trend in the NFL, so that they can get them playing competitively and then fill out the roster around them while they're on their rookie deal.

Then I'm not sure what direction you had intended for it to go but I was responding to the fact that in response to the recent Tweets you seemed concerned about the new coaches referring positively to Tannehill. You took the time to point out Tannehill's faults and the reasons he's not the answer at QB.

That seemed odd to me considering the context. Were there a discussion about Tannehill being the Dolphins answer at QB it would make sense, but since he's not going to be then that's already a condemnation of his ability and so any further talk of how bad he is is unnecessary.

I don't disagree with the notion that the fan base might not like Tannehill starting for one more year or that there aren't good reasons for finding a replacement right now. I do disagree that Tannehill's level of talent is at all relevant in the new discussion of whether he could be a one year hold over. Apart from the reasons mentioned above.

If the goal really is to tank for Tua and we can take Ross at face value ("I fired Gase because he wants to win now"), then it would appear that they want to dump Tannehill not because of his weaknesses, but because he's too talented to land us with a top-3 pick. I'll admit that I don't know how this works because I think it's the dumbest thing ever for an NFL owner to say something like that out loud

lol players aren't going to say "Tannehill can't get it done when it matters, so let's just tank the season". Most QB's in the NFL can't "get it done when it matters" yet those teams aren't tanking. So there's no evidence of what you're describing.

And yes Tannehill is too good for tanking. By most statistical measures you're looking at an average QB, and as sample size increases even win% starts to reflect the ability of the QB, and he's average there too. There's simply no evidence we're going to have a max 4-win or so season – something that allows us to pick top 5 or so – with Tannehill at QB. If you want to tank, get rid of Tannehill.

Tannehill is 13-11 over his past two seasons with right at a 93 QBR for both years. He's also 42-46 for his entire career, with means he's pretty dependable to deliver an 8-8 season. Last season was his lowest yards per game AND his highest sack percentage of his entire career, even though his rating was tied for 2nd best. So in some ways he became more efficient (to do more with less), but his pocket presence was worse than ever before.

That could be RT's injuries adding up, the missing weapons/defenders on offense or simply a guy who's reached his max potential...any of the three could be true. But despite all that, everything points to Tannehill winning 7-9 games somewhere next season, or possibly more with a better line (or defense, whatever). The negativity you're projecting is just not seen league-wide.

That's fine- and I didn't mean any disrespect either. I don't want him in Miami anymore either, but people saying he's always been horrible just bothers me.

Honestly, I think it's because what the world has become with the media and such...we don't get straight news anymore. It's always highly slanted with biased viewpoints and that drives me nuts.....it's not journalism. So I always try to see both sides of the story and form my own conclusions.

In fact, that's the only thing I tried to teach Travis a few years back- it's okay to be a fan in journalism, but be honest and show both sides so everyone has a takeaway. I think that's one reason he's so awesome these days- he paints full pictures and not just what's popular.

For me, I see an average quarterback with some clear upside and a few massive faults. We don't have to discuss that because everyone knows the conversation. I'd just like to see the guy get a fair shake on what he does well and have a chance to succeed somewhere else. I really wish that for any former Miami player though (besides maybe Landry) so that's nothing new.

One of the things that frustrates me the most about people in our society today is that so many are prone to label anyone who isn't "above average" as "terrible", "horrible", "awful", ect. Everything is on a sliding scale of shades of grey, and most people fall somewhere in the middle.

Exactly, that's what I meant as well. Either someone is the GOAT these days or they're a bum...there's no middle ground. That's how we're training the next generation to think. Life is not black and white.....there's a ton of grey area in everything....and people really miss out when they let society decide their opinions for them. I'm not aiming that at anyone in particular...that's just what the world does in general.

The smartphone era has vastly made our population dumber since there's no reason to think anymore. But I say to hell with that- be your own person and come to your own conclusions.

Let you tell it! Not only dumber, but people also seem more rude, inconsiderate, unappreciative, entitled, and offended by everything and everyone. While it's true, that those kinds of people have always been around. The sheer size of the internet/social media with open and easy access to just about any topic and/or anyone has to influence some users in a negative way. Why should kids listen to their parents when they have all these other people to learn from?

I think tannehill returns and we will draft a quarterback.

I also believe that once we find a quarterback to replace him, Tannehill will retire unless he finds a starter job paying starter money. I dont think he is looking to ride the bench. He seems very settled with Miami living.

If Tannehill were to do that, and just walk away at around age 30, starting as many games as he has for just one franchise, it would be almost unheard of in modern NFL history. Not saying that he won't, but it would be so rare that there isn't another example to look at for many decades.

Don Meridith was Dallas' primary starter throughout most of the 60s and walked away after his age 30 season.

Marc Bulger started a lot of games for the Rams, but was injured a lot, and those injuries forced him to walk away after his age 31 season.

I don't want to appear to be defending Tannehill, I've done that enough over the years and now I'm done with it, but this from RevRick is the truth. If you don't have good line play the team is not going to play well. If those guys can't hold their pass blocks or open holes for a runningback you're in big trouble. The last time we had even competent line play was a couple years ago with what Omar liked to call the Unicorn line because they were never healthy long and it is no coincidence that we made the playoffs that year. It wasn't that Thill all of a sudden became great. It was because he wasn't getting sacked at an embarrassing 50+ rate per season.

My contention is that great line play can make even a sub standard Qb look good. A good line and a great Qb can win the Super Bowl.
